And So It Ends

88 wins in what many expected was to a rebuilding season.  Now I know that isn't good enough for Ken Macha or Billy Beane...or even what we've come to expect as A's fans.  But I think many here in AN have perspective to realize all that happened in 2005 was building toward a better 2006 and 2007.

So, I want to open this thread to have people comment on what they consider the most memorable win of 2005.

To me, there are several clear candidates:

  • Kendall's face-first slide into Michael Young's metal spikes.
  • Chavez's home run off Brendan Donnelly.
  • Hatteberg's early season hit to give the Goggle Pen a blown save.
  • The sulk-off win...again off Rodriguez and the Goggle Pen.
There were others, like the historic four-run comeback in the ninth, the Kielty home run off the Goggle Pen, but these seem to be the most memorable wins of the season.  So, of course, I added a poll for you to vote on which win was the best win of 2005.

It was a fun season and over the coming months, AN will be the place to talk about the A's offseason moves, analysis of the season's stats and even looking forward to 2006.  I'm also trying to line up a few offseason interviews.  So stay tuned.  As for this upcoming week, I'm heading out on vacation for about nine days, but Nico has agreed to open up playoff threads for those of you who want to follow the playoffs in a way that only AN can (i.e. did you see Shrek just get whacked by the Yankees?).  Thanks, Nico.

I am
very proud of the way the squad performed this year.  This was one of the most likeable teams that I can remember.  I know that we all root for the jersey, but these guys were very easy to get behind.

I can't wait to enjoy some playoff baseball and after that the hot stove stuff should be fun.

Thanks for all of you hard work Blez.  This is a terric site.

Zito's FIRST MAJOR LEAGUE'S HIT!!!
No one mentioned Z's first major league hit against the Nationals? I re-watched the tape and it was hilarious, Kuiper & Fosse could not get over it.

Granted, we lost the game, but didn't Huddy predict jokingly that Zito may never get a hit in his career?

How can it not be Chavez
This home run was the single most exciting ballpark moment, the most electrifying, the best, the greatest ballpark moment i've ever had. I was literally on a natural high. The happiest i've ever been at an A's game. It's unexplainable. I wish i could go back to that moment.

And the thing is, i was at the Sulk Off too.. Lol.

Kendall comes in a close second though, cuz i wasn't there.

Sunday June 26th, 2005
The Sunday game against the giants where the A's scored 16 runs and the giants were almost no hit by Harden.  With their only hit a bloop single.  It was the coup de gras of a crushing sweep of the giants.

Ahh, the Off season moves....
There's going to be a million diaries a day over where Zito is going and what we're going to get for him and what we're going to give up for Miguel Cabrera or Mike Sweeney or Konerko or some other free agent that we aren't going to get. There's going to be several thread hijackings and Open Threads galore. There's going to be a unveiling of my brand new baseball statistic analyzing MLB player's asses and there's going to be people (mostly me) counting down every single damn day until Fan Fest, Spring Training and Opening Day.

Truly, I can't wait. :)

Just a thought:
Shouldn't this be a front-page poll?

And what about Kielty's 14th inning jack?

Thanks for maintaining the site Blez, especially as it's grown - I'm pretty sure that the site's population has doubled since I first arrived in May.

It's been a great year. Not quite the end we wished for, but who thought we would be in contention the last week of the season in May?

Doesn't make it hurt any less, though.

Turns out
According to Baseball Tonight, that the most magical moment for the A's was the walk-off-sulk-off.

Mine had to have been Kendall's spiking. Much of this is due to King and Korach's call of the play, which was extremely exciting to hear. When the details started percolating, and when I actually saw the play, it was made even more exciting than it already had been.

Here's to looking forward to FanFest and seeing Carlos Lee sitting in the chairs next to Chavvy, Crosby, Kotsay, Zito, Harden and Kendall. Then the legends; Fosse, Eck, Henderson (his retirement ceremony), Stewart, Steiny. Then the kids time; Street, DJ, Swish, Cupcakes, Haren and (drumroll please) Daric Barton.

So many great moments
I loved Crosby's first game back after the rib injury. Kotsay gets the winning hit and Crosby runs out of the dugout to give Kotsay a GIANT hug. It was beautiful.

None "game" moment. Some things you don't see on television. In KC, Kotsay lets two little girls rub his bat (no, perv) for good luck while he waits on deck. He's talking to them, then suddenly he runs to home to tell Swish to slide. Next AB he finishes the conversation. <sigh>

I love all the still and moving shots of the team pouring out of the dugout as Kendall comes down the line.

And one subtle thing, I love this one guy in diamond level right behind the play who, as Kendall barrels in, puts his hands on his head as if to say this is too much, my brain is hemorraging can this be the end? before he starts jumping and cheering.

Subtle. But that would have been me.

ahhh
Glad I could appear in the thread even if I wasn't really here.

So many great moments this season... it's impossible to choose one.

But. I pick The Tag mainly because my enjoyment of that was so tied in with AN.  I remember getting home late wondering how the game ended (it wasn't on TV), and I saw Nico's cryptic write-up which said nothing could be said about the ending, and then said NOTHING about the ending. Then I read through the thread and got really spastic excited versions of it. Then I went to the TiVo to check out Sportscenter which, amazingly, had the play.  Then I got so freaking pumped up i watched it a few more times. Then I posted gibberish on AN. Then I watched it a few more times. Then I felt sad for all the lost souls who could not watch the play that had turned so many adults into blubbering idiots. So I digitized the play quickly and Melody showed me how to host it online. Then I got to enjoy new blubbering as each new ANer watched the play.  This was all at about 2AM as I recall.

This has been a fun season, huh? Thanks AN and Blez and Nico and all the Usual Suspects. Except for Conkeyball. I will never forgive you for what you did to my favorite conker in the 1996 Derbyshire Conkers Championships. NEVER!

The only thing
mitigating against the Kendall tag (which has to be in top consideration) for me is that it was on the road, and there is something extra electrifying about moments that occur with the roar of the crowd.

For that electricity, I have to bring up Zito's strikeout of Frank Thomas behind a spontaneous chant of "Zi-to! Zi-to!" Chavy's HR off of Donnelly, too, for its importance and its unexpectedness (who dared to think...).

Finally, for me, a huge moment was Street retiring the final hitter thanks to Chavy's diving stop, to give the A's a sweep of the White Sox going into the All-Star Break. That game, like the "Kendall tag" game, was such a marathon roller coaster of emotions right down to the final nanosecond.

So many great moments.

I voted for Kendall's
I voted for Kendall's spike sandwhich play, e.g. the spikes to the face yet he was able to tag the runner out play.  That was such a wonderful moment.  It had all the feelings of a game that was about to be blown because odd things tend to happen when we play down in texas but alone came super kendall to save the day.  That was the highlight moment of the year for me.

Chavy's homer was huge and I went nuts while watching the sulk off.  My wife and her cousin were in the room at the time and even my wife, he doesn't really follow baseball, was excited.  That was a wonderful game.

I also think that Swisher scoring from first on the bunt by scutaro that was thrown away was a great moment.  It was on the first home saturday of the season, if you remember, and harden pitched a gem that day.  Swisher's joy as he slide head first into the play was evident even from the stands (I was there!  One of only 8 A's games this year but there will be many more next year!).  That moment was a joy also.

harden's almost-perfect game
That was the best-pitched game I have ever seen.  Unlike a lot of pefect game and no-hit bids -- like say, Zito's the next night -- Harden didn't get a bunch of sick defensive plays behind him.  Instead, we saw 8 straight innings of pop ups, strikeouts, and weak ground balls.

My vote
Has to be for Hatteberg's base hit off goggle pen.  I was lucky to be at that game and watch all the angels fans cry.  With the game on the line, nothing more glorious than seeing your team come through.

As far as importance I think it showed the angels that the A's could compete with them and that this might set the tone for the rest of the season.  Hatteberg will be gone next year, I hope, so I want to have this image in my head, not the offensive blunder that ensued the rest of the season.

I just hope that 2006 has a healthy Oakland Athletics.  This Hatteberg pick couldve easily been replaced by a Rich Harden CG shutout to clinch the division title.

Gotta be the Kendall play
I'm not usually one for playing a webgem over and over, and truth to be told I'm not really a big fan of Kendall either, but that play was so awesome I had to download the clip from online and send it to all my friends.

It wasn't just the cleats; it was the way he had to chase down the wildly bouncing ball in a hurry and still dive back to the plate with enough force to shove Michael Young back.  Awesome.

I can't remember any A's play I've enjoyed more since Randy Velarde's unassisted triple play.

by iglew on Oct 2, 2005 8:31 PM PDT reply actions

Just to be different...
It wasn't a game winner; it wasn't even against the Angels ... but for me, the most memorable moment of the season might be the last out of the Rangers' seventh inning on July 14th.  Tex at the plate, Harden perfect through 6 2/3, falls behind two balls and no strikes -- maybe the first time he's done that all evening -- and the umpire calls ball three before he can throw another pitch!  His fingers went too close to his mouth while he was up on the mound, and it's an automatic ball, and he's down 3-0 to one of the most dangerous hitters in the game ... and it doesn't faze him.  He comes right back and gets a ground ball to the right.  Ellis makes the sort of play we've learned to expect from Ellis.  Tex is gone.  Seven innings, no runs, no hits, no walks, no nothing.  Even though Soriano broke up the no-hitter with one out in the next inning, I think, for me, that might have been the greatest moment.

Destroying the Giants on both Saturday and Sunday were my favorite moments. Not the most important, not the most exciting, but it was right when the team was going on a tear and what better way to do that than crushing the Giants.

It was awesome during the big 5 run rally to see all of the players hanging on the dugout willing a victory. I feel so great about this team more than any other I can think of. Chavez's Bomb
I was on vacation up near Pinecrest Lake when the Angels and A's played that incredible series. The first night we drove down into Strawberry to watch the game in the only bar around those parts.

The Chavez bomb stands out because we were driving around Sonora on our way to Columbia, the historic mining town. The logn and short of ti is that we reached the parking lot for the Columbia State Park and my three cousins, my brother, my wife, my 5 year old daughter and mys sister all were milling about. We didn't want to go into the park until Chavez had his at bat but we all got out of our cars and started in anyway. I said hold on and got back int eh car and flipped on the radio... I get chills thinking about it...

Flippin amazing... three run jack... high fives all over the parking lot. We still went in to the park not knowing what would happen next... the A's had stormed back with Chavez's exclamation point.

Later I faked a bathroom break just in time to hear Bill King freak out when K Rod pouted and Kendall scored. It was priceless. Trying to explain what happened to my brother was pretty interesting... K Rod missed a ball thorwn back to him by the catcher I think... ot something.

did anyone record the King / Korach highlights
of the year that they played at the end of 'Extra Innings' today?  I would LOVE to get a wav or mp3 file of that somehow... I was getting misty-eyed listening to it, even though the Olympic theme in the background was a bit over-the-top.

I will miss listening to them.

There were some awesome clutch Scutaro moments this year.  I loved the 16-0 pasting of the Giants.  But the sulk-off (Chavvy HR off Donnelly and the ending) was up there with the walk-off bunt and Hatte's game 20 walk-off as the best games I've ever been to.

Gameday Audio
Right now you can listen to all 2004 and 2005 games, including most pregame and some post-game shows on A's broadcasts, and I think MLB charges $7.95 for the current package (probably good through the start of the 06 season, but be sure to read the fine print, as those slimy bastids at MLB shouldn't be trusted). Go here for info.
I just listened to one of my favorite all-time games- the May 6, 2004 game against the Yankees, in which Harden gave up four runs early, seemed on the verge of a rookie freakout, then got his head together and held the Yankees' heads under water for the rest of the day, enabling an A's comeback and upgrading Harden from High-Potential Kid to Gen-Yoo-Wine Stud.

I liked
the game (was it Opening Night?) against the Orioles where, late in a scoreless game, I was frustrated that Byrnes couldn't lay down a bunt, and after two failed attempts, what did he do? He hit a 3-run jack! Fosse said something like, "That'll work in moving the runners over."

I also especially enjoyed the 13-6 (9-0 after two innings) varnishing, shellacking, and pasting we gave to David Wells in mid-May.

Also memorable was when I saw Santana and Bonderman looming in the schedule back-to-back and methinks, "Well, there's no way we're going to win those ones," -- and we won both games!

One of my favorite Korach calls is when
Miggi hit that three-run homer in game 18 of the streak. It's not so much what he said but that fact that as he said it, he seemed like he was having a hard time breathing and getting it all out.

You just can't lose with those two in the booth.

Also, what he said right before Chavy hit his three-run homer in the sulk-off game was awesome.

Yeah, this is off-topic, but it definitely doesn't deserve its own diary...

Now that the season is over and I won't be taking myself out to any ball games for another six months... should I change my "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" ringtone?  The withdrawal is still tolerable as of right now, hasn't really kicked in yet... but by January I might just start shaking and crying every time I get a call.

Cal State Berkeley?!?!?!
There is no Cal State Berkeley. It's UC Berkeley. Totally different systems.

Anyways, Cal or California is sufficient. As Berkeley is the flagship campus of the UC system, it does not need to have the city name following it. This is just like how you said "University of Texas", without mentioning Austin. Or saying University of Michigan, Illinois or North Carolina without saying Ann Arbor, Urbana-Champaign or Chapel Hill (respectively).

Sorry, just one of my pet peeves.

BTW - which Cal song do you use? The Cal Band has a pretty nice selection.
