What I have learnd from AN in the last 24 hours...

Wow...

Can't we just go through a 24 hour period without a heart attack inducing event?

First the insufferable "Byrnes to..." rumors and then the troll that would just not go away.

Here's a few things I have learned...

  1. Ownership of A's season tickets does not grant you immunity from being a troll on this site.
  2. Putting "I'm not a troll..." in your posts does not grant you immunity from being a troll, especially if your next post you decide act like a troll.
  3. Having three big ass threads that were dominated by a troll is a little absurd, next time, just try to keep it down to one big ass thread.
  4. Trolls apparently don't sleep. I saw a whole bunch of posts between 3-9AM.
  5. Ohad, although I respect you, I have to say this.  The next time a troll comes by AN, don't start an "Ignore the troll" thread.  Those threads seem to accomplish the exact opposite.
  6. I'm too blogged out from out last troll to think of a #6.
  7. RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication."
  8. Don't mess with Kos, he was in the Army, he'll fuck you up.
Anything I might have missed?

I am going to use that line at some point!  "Koch like stomach event!!!"  Classic.

the score from the "sellout" debate
...was probably about 30-2.  It was 2-2, then the pro blog proliferation side put up a lot of unanswered points.  Now it's 30-1.  Some would call that decisive.

You're talking about...
...unique posters, right?

heh, yeah
just an estimate.  Thanks to the literally tireless efforts of the AN philanthropist/A's season ticket holder/"troll" (you believe him on the first two?), my side fared better when scored according to number of posts...maybe something like 127-40.

what I have learned in the past 24 hours, then, is
...what it feels like to run for Senator in Idaho against Mike Crapo (Crapo garnered 99% of the vote).

Hey
But at least our discussion had civility and class.

I learned...
...there's a Tsunami Relief donation button over there on the side!  Very good.  I hadn't noticed that before.  I'll bet THERE's a few million people who don't really give a flying crap about "whether 29 other MLB sites will start to look like this one..."

Perspective, please.  AN is only one of our many, many little blessings.  Can that be #6?  ;)

I learned....
that trolls are stubborn as hell. I also learned to never make the mistake in confusing "commandments" and "amendments" because a troll will go after me unwilling to drop it until I blow up. One more thing. I learned not to try and confuse myself with figuring out computer stuff. I'm still confused over RSS because I googled it and ended up on this computer geek website that just confused the hell out of me.

FYI
The First Commandment:

"I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, thou shalt have no other gods before me."

-King James Bible

The First Amendment:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof; or the abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peacebly to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The Flame Warriors categories are accurate
I'm sure everyone has seen the Flame Warriors List before- I think we were seeing several classic types.

Some of them are scary accurate
I have a friend who moderates a literature forum, and she knows all the Flame Warriors names by heart. As in, "We had some problems with an Evil Clown and a Troglodyte last week."

Our recent problems have been coming from a mix of Acne, Palooka, and Rebel Without A Clue.

Rebel Without a Clue
"Rebel Without a Clue's deep seated and infantile hostility to authority motivates his random and seemingly gratuitous attacks on list owners, Admins, Nannies or anyone else who attempts to maintain order and civility in discussion forums. Differing markedly from Rebel Leader, he is unattached to any cause other than petulance for its own sake, and will therefore seldom inspire general insurrection. In his frequent and ineffectual attacks on the established order he will often cite the Bible, or the US Constitution to support incoherent arguments. Rebel Without a Clue NEVER reads forum FAQs , and loudly decries as fascism any enforcement whatsoever of forum rules."

Damn.

I learned .......

I learned
ya gotta laugh at these things sometimes. I know it couldn't have been fun at the time. But, it did manage to positively impact my afternoon. Let me explain.

My afternoon went something like this:

Get home from school, grade some quizzes and write my master teacher about what I'm doing tomorrow. Majorly stressed out from emotionally exhausting class that morning.

Head over to AN (gotta read the 2nd part of that Beane interview!!)

Read Beane interview, good stuff.

See "Blez sold out" diary with 150 or so comments, think "oh, dear this can't be good" Hope for best, prepare for worst, click.

Skim comments, did he just call GnGG on mistakenly typing "commandment" instead of "ammendment"? Wow, that's uhh... classy...

See "do not feed troll thread" Think: Dave... must... not... click... waste... of... time...

Click anyway.

See "know the difference between amendmen*y* and commandment now" comment. Laugh out loud. Read Uncle Charlie's comment. Just about pee my pants.

Stress gone.

well i learned...
to appriciate AN because it is so much better than other sports blogs out there....  to escape the whole "troll" mess i wandered over to a Sacremento Kings web log (gotta have some sports to watch since there's no hockey) and it just isn't the same....  even though people post their pictures and profiles, it just doesn't seem as personal.  maybe it's because i only like the Kings, whereas i LOVE the A's....or maybe it's because Blez has created a community with this site, and i'm glad to be a part of it...thanks Blez and fellow ANers who make my day much more enjoyable.

by high street on Jan 24, 2005 6:31 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

why the troll was effective
I think it shows people actually care about the community here, and to a surprising degree are quite mature and interesting. Before troll-boy, the worst we had were a ton of oaklandasno1 posts (on topic, just a ton) and Grover smacking down teenagers.  If that's the worst, that's a pretty nice community.

Also, everyone stuck up for each other, including for G&Ggirl, (who presumably is not a 45 year old man sitting around in his underwear in Nevada)(in which case he does a damned good impersonation).

Nice board. Glad to have met you all.

Awww.....
Just goes to show that you can learn to love people you meet online. :) I thought it was crazy cool that people defended me from the big hairy troll.

And you have no proof that I'm a 45-year old man sitting around in my underroos. I gues you'll just have to take my word for it that I'ma 14 year old teenager infatuated with Barry Zito... :)

Ahhh AN is my extended family. And, it's the only bar I can be at until I'm 21. :)

"Latley"
If you think I'm wrong than say so.

Big words confuise me
But i caught your mistake. :)

Nice choice of vocabulary. You learn a new word everyday.

pretentious- adjective:   making claim to or creating an appearance of (often undeserved)
importance or distinction

You didn't get to go to school today...
and education is important. One of the things I love about this site is that I get to use words and phrases that I wouldn't normally be able to in my daily life.

by grover on Jan 24, 2005 7:43 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I actually wanted to go to school today......
and online, you can be anyone you want to be. You can sound smart, dumb, trolly, or just weird. I prefer to be myself but in real life I'm a lot more..... interesting than AN projects me to be. I can't fully express myself. :)

If I said half the stuff that I say on here to my friends, they'd think I was on something. At least some of my friends would. You guys won't get such a shocker at AN day.

Sorry
But I was trying to make light of a situation that pissed off alot of people yesterday.  I mean, as the old saying goes, if we can't laugh at ourselve, who can we laugh at.

Also, the bar in Hong Kong that I told you about a few weeks ago.  I heard it closed down during the SARS crisis.  I'm still a little bit sad from the news of its passing.

I'm looking forward to the season because...
...I have a new DVR and won't have to miss an inning! I can start watching an hour before the game ends, FF through all the breaks, and catch up to live action just in time for the A's to close it out!

Shweeeeet!

P.M.:It must be nice to always believe you know better, to always think you're the smartest person in the room. J.C.: No. It's awful.
