Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel trade: 25-man roster moves coming Saturday and Sunday

Jonathan Daniel

The A's designated Nick Buss for assignment to make room on the 40-man for the two newcomers, with Samardzija and Hammel to report today and tomorrow, respectively.

The additions of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel add two players to the 40-man roster, and the subtraction of Dan Straily removes one. To complete the 40-man maneuvering, the Athletics designated Sacramento outfielder Nick Buss for assignment. The A's will need to move two players off of the active roster to complete the moves.

Buss, 27, was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 4 after A.J. Griffin was placed on the 60-day disabled list following his Tommy John surgery. Between the Albuquerque Isotopes and Sacramento River Cats of the Pacific Coast League, Buss batted .270/.330/.391 with 28 walks and 48 strikeouts (compare with the PCL average of .273/.343/.424).

25-man moves will come today and tomorrow

The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reported several details announced by Billy Beane in a morning conference call.

The A's two probable moves are (1) to demote a starting pitcher to the triple-A rotation and (2) move a starter into the long relief role, displacing a bullpen arm.

Jeff Samardzija to report today, likely to start Sunday.

Jeff Samardzija had been on turn to start today's game for the Cubs against the Washington Nationals. While Billy Beane demurred on announcing when "the Shark" would first start, Cubs beat writer Carrie Muskat believed that Samardzija will start Sunday:

Brad Mills was scheduled to start Sunday for the Athletics prior to the announcement of the trade.

Logically, the first move will be to demote an active roster player that could not possibly be needed today, and I would speculate this means the A's will have an 8-man bullpen for this evening's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, especially after using every reliever but Jim Johnson in yesterday's extra innings affair.

Jason Hammel to report tomorrow, could start July 9.

Jason Hammel pitched in the Friday, July 4 game, which would put him on regular rest to start on July 9. This would be Tommy Milone's regular turn.
