Recent History of Run Diffs and Playoff Results

Since there's been a lot of talk about the A's superlative run differential I thought I would look at the recent history of run diff leaders and see how they did in the playoffs.

Will Billy's shit finally work?

Interesting to look at. I hadn't given the Giants their due (why should I? Eff em, right?). They were a legitimately good team in 2010 and even though 8th overall in 2012 the field was pretty even. No team was particularly dominant in either year and both years the Giants were the better team in the WS by run diff.

The Cardinals had no business beating Texas in 2011. Biggest recent upset by far. Also, Detroit in 2012 was the worst team to make it to the WS in recent history.

As you can see, in recent history, the dominant teams (best team with over +190) won the world series 3 out of 4 times. Only the 2011 Yankees blew it.

It's still a crap shoot, but being the best team by a significant margin helps a lot.
