Game Thread #70: Oakland Athletics vs. Texas Rangers

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

After a successful series win against the New York Yankees this weekend, even with half the team struggling badly at the plate, the A's welcome in the Texas Rangers, who have quite an extensive injury list, for a little weeknight baseball fun.

Of course it must be said: Way to go, USA!

Good evening and welcome to another exciting night of A's baseball. I, baseballgirl, will be your surprise Monday night host, and it should be a great night, since the A's game will be competing with ABC's The Bachelorette in my house because it's Monday night and there are people here watching reality TV. Do not be alarmed if you read Sunday's post; I'm only serving water and lemonade, so there is little chance of me confusing the baseball game with a hockey game. Or, I guess, a World Cup game. But if I start accidentally handing out roses in the thread, you can let me know.

Tonight's game will feature the pitchers' duel of Drew Pomeranz and Colby Lewis for the Rangers, and if you don't recognize a lot of names in the Rangers' lineup, you are definitely not alone. I mean, seriously. The Rangers, as has been well-chronicled all year, have had a horrific season so far, losing an extraordinary number of players to injury, and the A's, of course, will try to take advantage of their perennial AL rivals in their weakened state. Not that the A's didn't have two huge injuries of their own; leaving gaping holes in their starting rotation. Of course, they have had considerable success with the replacements, and Pomeranz is no exception. He will look for another quality start tonight.

The Rangers are flirting with the .500 mark, 8 full games behind the Athletics, and the A's would love to widen the gap, while putting more pressure on the Angels, who are just 4.5 behind. They have somehow managed to keep the little ship afloat, despite their slumping (really, really slumping players in the middle of the lineup). Those aforementioned players are batting second, fourth, fifth and sixth tonight, and it would be a great time for them to break out.

Here are your lineups:
