From the O.co Coliseum, the Oakland Athletics face the Washington Nationals with the first pitch at 7:05 pm Pacific Time. This is Oakland's first interleague game of the 2014 campaign. Oakland enters the game with a 20-15 record to lead the American League Western Division, 1.5 games ahead of the Seattle Mariners, 2 ahead of the Texas Rangers, and 3 ahead of the Los Angeles Angels. The Nationals arrive in the midst of a thus-far extremely close National League Eastern Division, with the Miami Marlins leading by 0.5, the Atlanta Braves trailing by 0.5, the Mets by 2.5, and the Phillies by 3.5.
For the Nationals tonight, Doug Fister makes his 2014 and Nationals debut after starting the year on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation and a strained right lat muscle. With the Detroit Tigers in 2013, Fister was 14-9 with a 3.67 ERA over 208⅔ innings. The Nationals acquired Fister from the Detroit Tigers for Ian Krol, Steve Lombardozzi, and Robbie Ray. In two rehab starts, Fister has given up two earned runs in 7⅔ innings. At the Coliseum, Fister is 2-3 with a 2.41 ERA in 33⅔ innings.
Tommy Milone starts for the Athletics this evening with an 0-3 mark and 5.86 ERA. Milone has historically pitched well at the Coliseum, however, and sports a 12-8 mark with a 3.08 ERA in 172⅔ innings. Milone faces his former team for the first time, having arrived in 2012 as part of the trade for Gio Gonzalez.
