There are a few reasons why I think this is a good idea. When people discuss consistent shutdown relievers soft-tossing submariners generally do not come up in the conversation (Ziegler's fastball averages 85-86mph). This is a good thing for the A’s because it likely means that Ziegler won’t be as expensive as bigger name shut-down relievers. The Diamondbacks are already out of the playoff race and all their peripherals point to this trend continuing, meaning they’ll likely be willing to trade Ziegler. Ziegler signed a relatively team-friendly contract this year ($9.5m/2yrs + a team option of $5.5m for 2016). Having a guy like Ziegler in the bullpen will help lessen the blow when Gregerson and Johnson leave at the end of the year (and might even give Doolittle more leads to protect in the 9th this year) helping the A’s extend their "window". Additionally, Ziegler has a history of being reliable. In his 418 career IP he has a hr/fb% of 6.4% (better than Mariano Rivera), a hr/9 rate of 0.28 (nearly twice as good as pretty much everyone), the only people who have better career ERAs and more IP than Ziegler are Mariano Rivera, Billy Wagner, Jonathan Papelbon, and Mike Adams, Ziegler has a career ERA- of 59.
Another benefit to getting him is that he has a low injury risk, more important this year than ever, because he doesn’t throw hard and because he’s a submariner. I’m not sure what I’d be willing to offer for Ziegler, but I know I was sad when he left and I know I want him back.
Do you want Ziegler back? What would you be willing to offer? And what do you think it will take to get him?
