Rivercats to become...the Sacramento Giants?

Surprised no one has posted on this yet...with the A's player development contract with the Rivercats ending after the 2014 season, there is speculation starting to heat up that the Giants may swoop in and literally steal the franchise away from the A's (since their own player development contract with the Fresno Grizzlies coincidentally also ends after this season).

KCRA: Rumors fly of Sacramento River Cats changing affiliations

The River Cats are, by some measures, the most valuable minor league franchise in the sport and losing their affiliation would be a blow to the A's no matter how you slice it - losing it to the Giants would hurt that much more.

Though this move would be painful, as a Sacramento resident, I certainly understand the impetus of the possibility from the River Cats' perspective. Sacramento is a Giants town and the Giants brand trumps the A's pretty much universally.

From my perspective, I give this a better than 50-50 chance of happening for the Giants. I doubt the A's put much of a fight to keep this affiliation given that they have their own issues keeping control of interests much closer and inside the city they actually play in...however, that doesn't mean it won't be a shame when/if it happens. A lot of great A's have, are or will play with the River Cats and Raley Field is a great place to watch the future of the A's...

RIP Rio Gatos...one more nail in the coffin for the A's universe...
