Game Thread: Athletics vs. Rockies

Baseball!!! Okay maybe a little too much excitement for a spring training game, but this game has a little different feel to it than most of the other games so far this spring. For starters we have a night game today as opposed to the usual 1:00 PM start time we see so often during the spring. This game will also be our second nationally televised game on MLB Network and the first CSNCA game of the season for our viewing pleasure. For the occasion (or out of random coincidence) the A's will come to play with an all major league lineup tonight that includes fan favorites Coco Crisp, Josh Donaldson, and Yoenis Cespedes. If that is not enough, we could be treated to one of the new rules in place for the upcoming season, the review system. If you are unfamiliar with the review system:

Managers have been encouraged to use televised games this spring to get acclimated to the challenge system; if a manager challenges a call and he's correct, he retains his challenge, but there will be some strategy involved. For instance, a manager might be less inclined to blow a challenge with his team at bat and a two-out, none-on situation. In addition, not all plays are reviewable, and managers must be thoroughly familiar with those distinctions, such as the fact that balls hit close to the line between home plate and the bag are not reviewable - but balls on or near the line are reviewable past the bag.

Having had limited number of televised game so far, Bob Melvin has not had much of a chance to test out the new system, however he may be eager to try it out tonight against Colorado with the start of the season soon approaching. The system could end up being knowing the what the rules are as much as knowing when to use the system. The amount of exposure to it this spring could be key and come in hand for it's regular use once the season starts. This is not just an opportunity for Melvin, but also for many of us to get a feel for how the challenge system will work. Over the course of a 162 game season, we can only imagine how many occasions will arise where the game ends up deferring to the new review system. This will be something to follow the tonight and as the season goes on in 2014.

I hope everyone is geared up for some spring training baseball, well as much as a one can enjoy a spring training game in middle of March. Don't worry, real baseball is soon around the corner and tonight could be a good night to take in glimpse of a potential lineup we might see at some point this season, and some other characters we maybe want to check out for fun (I'm looking at you Burns! Or I was, you're too fast to keep up with). Anyway it's close to baseball time and that means Fosse will soon talk about dibs and edible things. The natural call of baseball being around the corner.
