The Jake Peavy Trade - Shortstop Jose Iglesias

If the reports are true, then Jake Peavy has been traded to the Red Sox. Part of that deal included the Red Sox sending infielder Jose Iglesias to the Tigers.

With those details, it seems pretty clear why the A's were rumored to be part of the Peavy discussions for so long. We wanted to be the third trading partner who received Iglesias. Instead, it looks like the Tigers jumped in at the last minute after they couldn't get Cliff Lee from the Phillies.

Iglesias would've been a fantastic pickup... It looks like in order to get him, the A's would have had to provide a better package than the Tigers, who parted with touted outfield prospect Avisail Garcia and right-handed reliever Bryan Villarreal.

Any thoughts on this? The Red Sox clearly wanted farm talent (not a veteran rental), so someone like Chris Young would not fit the bill, either. I struggle to think of a better package the A's could have provided that doesn't include one of our minor league pitchers, which would be a pretty bitter pill to swallow...
