Game #93: Oakland Athletics vs. Boston Red Sox

Well, if it's the playoffs you're hankering for, welcome to Oakland for this weekend's series between the red-hot Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox, owners of the one and two spots in the American League. This last weekend before the All-Star break should be a doozy, as the A's will get some media attention if they play well. Expect big crowds at the stadium tonight, and expect a fun game.

Game #93: Sloppy Defense, Lousy Bullpen Work, Loss

The A's managed to still lose to John Lackey tonight, despite scrappily tying the game after initially falling behind through every fault of their own, but the bullpen was as bad as Jarrod Parker was good, and instead of the walk-off victory script we are so accustomed to in Oakland, the Red Sox, behind Lackey and Dustin Pedroia, best the A's in the opener of the series.

Well, believe it or not, the A's have tied up this game. And Jarrod Parker has seemingly outlasted John Lackey. We go to the bottom of the seventh, 2-2.

Well the bad news is that the A's don't have a hit. The good news is that they have put two men on base in the second and the fourth. And more bad news; they couldn't score any of them. And more good news; after their Bad News Bears second inning, the A's have looked great in the field, and Parker has set down 10 in a row. Despite (or maybe because) Parker knocked C.B. Bucknor out of the game, the strike zone has been very "Red Sox", and even though he's throwing a no-hitter, there is no way Lackey pitches the whole game. He's over 75 pitches in the fifth. We go to the 5th; 2-0 Boston.

Ugliest inning of the 2013 season? You've seen it. That was the second inning, as the A's made 2 real errors, struggled through every batter, and basically looked like the Houston Astros. There, I said it. They're down 2-0, probably lucky to be so, and facing Lackey, who looks like he can throw a no-hitter tonight. And they've knocked the home plate umpire out of the game; bye C.B.. But we're going to the bottom of the second. There's plenty of time left.
