A look ahead

The A's sure are enjoying a nice start to the season (for a change). At the same time it isn't really sacrilege to add that we've faced our share of weak and/or struggling opponents. This of course brings up the question how the contributions of our staff should be weighted against that of our opponents. And while we have a dominant winning record against suck teams (9-0) we're only 3-4 against non-terrible opponents (including going 0-2 against good pitching, with the start against Scherzer being a no decision). All signs, therefore, point to us being a pretty good team, probably better even than last year, but not improved to the point where we would be putting fear into the kind of opponents we would be facing in the postseason.

Fortunately, there is still time to rectify that and the upcoming schedule promises to be extremely helpful with regard to that goal. Everyone remember the dreaded September schedule this team had looming over them last year throughout their summer hot streak? Well, it's fair to say that last year's September is this year's May, and while no team wants to peak this early in the year it would certainly be fun to watch our squad do some damage against teams with (for the most part) legitimate aspirations for postseason play.
