Figuring out Magic Numbers (mAthletics) Updated 9/29!

(Updated Saturday Morning)

There was some discussion about how to figure out Magic Numbers on The Oakland Clubhouse boards so I thought I'd post about it here. For some reason ESPN's "Hunt For October" has our magic at (12) which would mean we would need to win out to ensure a playoff spot. It turns out (12) is only our Magic number for the top wild card spot. Why on earth would ESPN base it's Magic Number on the 1st WC position rather than the 2nd? Anyways the Magic number that is most important is clearly the one for that final AL WC spot. (ESPN Has now switched the "Hunt for October" page to include the Magic number for the 2nd wild card rather than the first)

Here is a bit of math I put together for finding the Magic number at any point in the season.

The Magic number is always the difference between 163 and (A's wins plus Closest Pursuer's Loses). In this case...

2nd WC Magic Number: 163-(89+70)=4

So as long as the Angels are the team chasing us (they are currently tied) it's 163-(A's Wins + Angels Loses) This will allow you to figure out the magic number at any point in the season.

Next season if the A's win on opening day and the other 4 division rivals lose, the A's Magic number will be 161 going into the 2nd day of the season. I understand that's way too early to start talking about magic numbers but I just wanted to drive home the point that every team starts every season with a magic number of 163 and works it down from there.

To find the Magic Number for the A's to win the division simply replace Angel's loses with Ranger's Loses (or loses of any team that happens to be leading the division.)

Divisional Magic Number: 163-(89+65)=9

So Lets hope both of these numbers continue to go down, and lets cheer the A's on as we march towards the Playoffs!
