The Yankees have the highest payroll, we have the second smallest. Yet our records are similar, and guess what, it seems that for the most part salary has nothing to do with winning percentage this season.
I wrote up my thoughts on that in my blog post. . . including some fun charts, stats, and regression output. If the A's do end up making it well into the playoffs, I'm sure we'll hear the media saying that we are witnessing a new Moneyball era. As much as I love Billy Beane for what he's done over the years, I'd be surprised if we were exploiting some statistical inefficiency that other teams are unware of, given the amount of data out there and how stats focused the game has gotten. Curious to hear what others think? I'd say, to be honest, our success this year can be mostly attributed to making lucky trades and acquisitions. \\blog -> http://picklesanddata.com/data/?p=79
