Who? Ok, he is a very minor player that you probably have never heard of. He is so good, he was just DFA'd by Milwaukee. That's actually a good thing, because he can be had for peanuts. One flamed out C+ prospect could do. As back-up catchers go, you could do worse than George Kottaras.
wRC+ is total offensive value. Park and league adjusted. 100 is the average player. 120 is 120% of average etc.
George has a 122 wRC+ which puts him into the top 10 C with at least 100 PA. The lefty could make a good platoon vr. RH pitchers as he has a ~.815 OPS against RHP the last few years (.770 total each of the last two years). He's plays ~60 games a year.
His warts are his D/arm is below average, and next year will be his second arb year. Backup catchers never get much, but even 1m could be too expensive for the A's.
Kurt Suzuki has a wRC+ of 42. His OPS of .519 is terrible but Suzuki is even worse vr. RHP at .480 OPS.
So whether Derek Norris (wRC+ 79) works out as the primary catcher or not, we should have someone else to back him up or fill in if needed. I don't see that in Sacramento. If not this year than next as we could stash George in AAA (I think) till Suzuki is gone. I would love to get some flashy big name SS, but there are some smaller deals we could be doing also.
