I regrettably forget which front page writer wrote about this, but I read that our road to the playoffs would be adequately paved by sweeping all the bad teams (SEA, KC, MIN) and going .500ish against everyone else. My issue with looking at it from this angle is that needing sweeps seems a bit daunting to me. Let's just, for math's sake, say that 90 wins do indeed get us the 2nd wild card spot. In order to reach that we need to go 37-27 from today, July 26th, forth.
Remaining this season we have 16 3-game series and 4 4-game series. If we win 13 of the 16 3-game series 2 games to 1 and lose the other 3 series 2-1 that gives us 29 wins and 19 losses. Then if we split all 4 4-game series we reach 90 wins exactly.
I prefer to look at it this way. Just keep winning series.
