Amazingly, with just one game remaining for the four unsettled postseason teams (Oakland, Texas, Baltimore, and New York), Oakland can be either the #1 seed, the #2 seed, Wildcard #1, or Wildcard #2. Indeed, there is one scenario where if Oakland had to play in the wildcard game, it would not know where it would be playing until after a Thursday tiebreaker for the AL East. Below the jump are the potential schedules.
Oakland defeats Texas AND Boston defeats New YorkOakland is the #1 seed.
Sun 10/07: Game 1 @ Wildcard Winner
Mon 10/08: Game 2 @ Wildcard Winner
Wed 10/10: Game 3 v Wildcard Winner
Thu 10/11: Game 4* v Wildcard Winner
Fri 10/12: Game 5* v Wildcard Winner
*if necessary
Oakland defeats Texas AND New York defeats Boston
Oakland is the #2 seed.
Sat 10/06: Game 1 @ Detroit
Sun 10/07: Game 2 @ Detroit
Tue 10/09: Game 3 v Detroit
Wed 10/10: Game 4* v Detroit
Thu 10/11: Game 5* v Detroit
*if necessary
Texas defeats Oakland AND Tampa Bay defeats Baltimore
Oakland is the first wildcard.
Fri 10/05: Wildcard v Baltimore @ O.co Coliseum
Sun 10/07: Game 1 v New York
Mon 10/08: Game 2 v New York
Wed 10/10: Game 3 @ New York
Thu 10/11: Game 4* @ New York
Fri 10/12: Game 5* @ New York
*if necessary
Texas defeats Oakland AND Baltimore defeats Tampa Bay.
Oakland is the second wildcard. Then it gets tricky.
If New York defeats Boston, the following schedule results:
Fri 10/05: Wildcard @ Baltimore
Sun 10/07: Game 1 v New York
Mon 10/08: Game 2 v New York
Wed 10/10: Game 3 @ New York
Thu 10/11: Game 4* @ New York
Fri 10/12: Game 5* @ New York
*if necessary
If Boston defeats New York, then the AL East tie must be broken, with the loser as the first wildcard. Oakland will not know which stadium it will be playing at until the conclusion of the AL East tiebreaker.
Thu 10/06: New York @ Baltimore for AL East title. The loser is the first wildcard.
Fri 10/07: Wildcard @ Loser of NYY/BAL
And then, if the A's win, who they would play in the division series depends on who won the AL East. If New York wins the AL East, New York would be the #1 seed. If Baltimore wins the AL East, Texas would be the #1 seed.
Sun 10/07: Game 1 v NYY/TEX
Mon 10/08: Game 2 v NYY/TEX
Wed 10/10: Game 3 @ NYY/TEX
Thu 10/11: Game 4* @ NYY/TEX
Fri 10/12: Game 5* @ NYY/TEX
