Barry Zito Keeps on Rolling

Look at my handle, I don't think I could let this game go by without writing something. Anyone watch any NCLS friday night? It was a great game. With the Giants on the verge of elimination they gave the ball to Barry Zito. Then the bs began. The bs being those fucking terrible announcers! Tim McCarver never missed a chance to say something derogatory about Barry Zito in the first 4 innings. He and Buck kept talking about how quick the hook would be. Buck for no apparent reason kept telling us the speed of his fastball and his age, over and over and over. "34 year old Barry Zito delivers a 85 mile per hour fastball." Did anyone else catch that? I would think we all know by now that velocity is a nice to have but not mandatory requirement to be a big league pitcher. And what's up with repeatedly telling us his age? 34 is neither washed up nor too young. In baseball years he's middle aged. Ok. Why not tell us the age of everyone else out there? It sounded like these announcers were clearly Cardinals announcers, which they are.

Oh yeah, then there was the game. In another big playoff game, Zito mowed and mowed and mowed. McCarver later called it the greatest performance of Zito's life, but I was at game 2 of the 2003 in ALDS and watched Zito mow down the Red Sox the same way. He also beat the Yankees in a must win playoff game in 2000. He lost the game where Giambi didn't slide 1-0. Zito is a big game pitcher. And I remember Game 1 of the 2006 ALDS where he beat Johan Santana. I didn't hear these announcers mention those games at all, just his big contract, and the manager's quick hook, and the speed of his fastball.

7 and 2/3 innings, no runs, pretty dominant, no, DOMINANT! Forever is a mighty long time, I don't give up on this guy. I don't really root for the Giants but I root for Barry Zito.
