Community Prospect List #2
Community Prospect List:
#1: Jarrod Parker, RHP
Instead, in order to vote for a prospect for the current round of voting, find the first comment in the thread that says "VOTE FOR [PLAYER NAME]", for example, "VOTE FOR GRANT GREEN", and add a +1 Comment that comment. If the player that you want to vote for does not have a comment, create it yourself by typing "VOTE FOR [PLAYER NAME]" for your comment, and post. Only the first comment will count for that player’s voting, so watch for the green.
There are about 11 or so weeks until Opening Day, so we will be doing one voting thread per week until the season starts. So get ready, set and VOTE!

Are you trying to imply something by putting him at the top of the list?
Because if so, you’re wrong.

What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

OK, so I'm torn between Choice and Peacock right now
I’m leaning towards Peacock because I really like that he has two plus pitches right now with a useable change up and I’m buying into mechanical adjustments he made improving his command. He really reminds me of a right handed version of Gio Gonzalez with the possibility of better control, he’s just about big league ready, and he’s been fairly clean injury wise.
I really like Choice, but he’s still has a few question marks that concern me. He showed some improvement with his contact rate last season but it’s still awfully high for A ball. I can’t help feeling like Choice’s major league upside is closer to Greg Vaughn with better defense(which is a very good player), than true superstar.
I’m still thinking about it but I could be swayed in either direction at this point.
Choice very well may not reach or approach it,
but I would think his “ceiling” is more like Grady Sizemore or “Jayson Werth/Curtis Granderson without quite the SBs”: Someone who could stick in CF, hit for dangerous power along with good speed, and will strikeout a lot. Vaughn is a better guess for what he’ll actually become, but the ceiling is high.

I don't see his defensive potential as being Cameron-good
Cameron was a GG CFer, whereas I’m just hoping Choice can stick in CF.

Yes, but that's such an essential part of Cameron's game
that you can’t really do that, any more than you can say “Scott Rolen without the defense” or “Rod Carew without the high batting average”.

That seems like a pretty good comp
Then the hope would be that Choice has a little more power and hopefully not too much less glove.
Looking at Cameron's minor-league numbers
one thing that stands out is that he had bad power numbers early on — his first 4 seasons he SLG’d .243, .388, .297, and .391. It wasn’t until his 5th season, as a 22-year-old in AA, that he managed to SLG over .400 for a full season.
Obviously he’s not a clear comp for Choice, since Cameron was drafted out of high school. They’ve ended up at a similar place at the same age. But it does give me some hope for the A’s’ “projected power” types.
I also think that Choice has a decent chance to hit for a good deal more power than Cameron, who was K’ing 150 times a season and hitting around 25 HRs. Choice has the power to produce more HRs than that.

Also, Cameron came up with the White Sox
and I wonder whether his emergence as a power hitter influenced their projections for Swingles.

Dye was a 30-30 guy, so I'll take that anytime!

Sorry, I was thinking of my Aunt Bertha
Honestly not sure who I was thinking of, if anyone! Anyway, for Choice I think the comps for his ceiling have to start with players who at least could hold down CF (meaning they played there with some success). But since he’s as likely as not to end up in the COF, I’m focusing on guys unlike Cameron, C. Young, who are excellent/very good defensive CFers, which I assume Choice is not projected to be.

Ive heard Choice compared to Ron Gant
Shooty Babbitt compared him to Kirby Puckett.
by gambler on Jan 30, 2012 10:19 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
Puckett? Really?
Choice is way bigger than Puckett (who’s listen on b-r.com at 5’8" 178 — 4 inches and 40 pounds less than Choice) and who never hit for any power at all until he was 26 or so, minors or majors. Puckett rarely walked or K’d, and Choice does both a lot.
Gant maybe, although again Choice is a lot bigger than him.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Was that his weight when drafted?
I know he weighed more than that. Shooty must have been comparing them because they are stocky center fielders.
by gambler on Jan 30, 2012 11:18 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
I have nothing to go on but memory and eyes
So take this with a grain of salt.
But Puckett was always a stalky CF even when he was young, and he played a damn good CF. He was short but I see the similar build to Choice. Normally center fielders look like Coco Crisp so I can see the comparison.
Though, I was too young to realize if he ran good routes to the ball. Maybe someone could tell me if he ran good routes.
It must be because of their size. I know Choice should stick in CF, does anyone know if he’s Puckett like there?

Puckett generally played way too deep
because he liked snatching homers from over the Metrodome’s fence 2 or 3 times a year (and maybe because he didn’t track back on the ball well — given how deep he played he didn’t have much chance to do that). I think he was seriously overrated as a CF, nowhere near as good as Murphy or Pettis, for instance.

I thought he was pretty good in 2010 as well
Other than a rough 38 inning transition to AA Peacock was pretty good the last two years. The fact that he has always had good scouting reports and that his best performances are his most recent and at his highest levels holds a lot of weight with me. I’m not that concerned about his performances at the lower levels a few years ago, I am willing to buy into his improvement.
Even in his earlier years Peacock seems to show better control when he gets comfortable at a given level.

The 4.18 FIP in AAA last year was not good.
I would like to see him post better numbers in Sacramento before he gets a spot in the big league rotation.
Personally I prefer to take it slow with prospects
So I wouldn’t mind at all if he got a few more innings in AAA before making the jump to the majors. But he has shown the ability to adjust in the past, so if the A’s watched him in spring training and decide he’s ready to start making the adjustment to pro ball I don’t think it would hurt his development too much if at all. Still, I hope he isn’t needed in the rotations to start the season.
You know who else had great scouting reports and bad results until the one year they did quite well in AA and AAA? Vin Mazzaro.
I don't really see much comparison between them, the scouting reports for Vin Mazzaro were never that great
Reports said Mazzaro was better than his numbers but he was never as highly regarded as Peacock, and he never had the stuff that Peacock had. Mazzaro was always a sinkerballer with an inconsistent slider, I don’t think his struggles have any bearing on how I should evaluate Peacock. They are just way too different as pitchers.
Besides, Peacock’s earlier results weren’t that bad. His K-rates lagged behind his stuff until 2010 in A+ ball but he was at least decent when he settled into a level prior to that.
Currently "poll, same as last year" has twice as many votes as either other option
Any chance we could go to that format? Not that seeing “+1” over and over isn’t utterly fascinating when reading a thread….

So someone is rigging the vote to choose a method that allows them to rig future votes?
This is the Inception of prospect lists
A poll is fine
and easy on the person doing the list. It’s kind of pathetic that someone would stuff the ballots really.
Maybe if someone unusual wins then maybe we should have a run off with recs or +1. If for example if Head or Stassi get voted the 4th best prospect, we probably have stuffing. We can move to +1 or recs for that round.
by OnlybuyBeaneJerseys on Jan 29, 2012 11:26 PM PST reply actions
Ballot stuffing is detectable
if someone is watching the vote carefully. You have to keep an eye on it when it’s happening, though. Paul used to do that, but I don’t think he’s around any more.
Difference of opinion among my community is a sign of the bounty of God.
Do we have to stop these when the season starts?
I think we should try to do a top 15 or even a top 20.

Cracks Baseball America’s organizational top 10 for the A’s this year? Wow…didn’t he do that in….2007 as well? The last time Baseball America considered this guy a top 10 prospect he was featured on a list that included the likes of: Javier Herrera, Jason Windsor, Justin Sellers, Matt Sulentic; oh and at #10? A very young Trevor Cahill.
Do they think that low of our system that a 27 year old who’s only had 1 full season above AA is ranked #8? wow…..Either their standards for who is considered a “prospect” have slipped, or they really do think our system still sucks!
meant to finish that thought...
Funny when you look back at that list. I have to believe that BA weighs a prospect that has succeeded at higher levels/closer to making the big leagues very strongly
