Call PG&E There's A Power Outage in Oakland
Let me tell you something you already know the A's haven't hit many home runs lately. And the members of their current squad haven't exactly torn the cover off the ball in their careers either. The Barry Bonds (or Hank Aaron) of our team is Jonny Gomes. Gomes has launched a mere 118 dingers in his time in baseball. All together the present 40-man roster A's aren't exactly dean's list students when it comes to hitting the long ball, below are their totals:
| Player | HR |
| Jonny Gomes | 118 |
| Coco Crisp | 75 |
| Kurt Suzuki | 56 |
| Seth Smith | 51 |
| Daric Barton | 26 |
| Cliff Pennington | 18 |
| Scott Sizemore | 14 |
| Adam Rosales | 13 |
| Brandon Allen | 11 |
| Kila Ka’aihue | 11 |
| Josh Reddick | 10 |
| Chris Carter | 3 |
| Eric Sogard | 2 |
| Jemile Weeks | 2 |
| Collin Cowgill | 1 |
| Josh Donaldson | 1 |
| Tom Milone | 1 |
| Michael Taylor | 1 |
There are a few guys on the 40-man roster who have yet to hit an MLB home run and of course a few guys invited to spring training but not on the 40-man roster who have. But the severe lacking in experience and home runs on this club was really driven home by the Susan Slusser Drumbeat post about Manny Ramirez on Friday where she wrote,
"the team can test out a DH [in Manny Ramirez] who has 555 career homers – eighth-most all-time among right-handed hitters.
Who is the A’s current top home-run threat? Well, the man with the most career homers on the roster is Gomes, with 118, followed by Coco Crisp, with 75."
While Slusser gave some perspective, she didn't give it all. That 555 career home runs by Manny eclipses the combined 414 that the eighteen players on the A's with at least a home run (and one is a pitcher in Milone!) have. The 141 additional home runs that Manny has of course eclipse the 118 home runs that the A's leader has.
There are seven other players who have more home runs that the combined present-day A's, Alex Rodriguez (629), Jim Thome (604), Chipper Jones (454), Vladimir Guerrero (449), Albert Pujols (445), Jason Giambi (428) and Andruw Jones (420). Gomes' 118 home runs is 103rd best among active players tied with Josh Hamilton, Alex Rios and Chris Young (though interestingly aside from Hamilton, Gomes has done it in fewer plate appearances than all the others and the difference between he and Hamilton isn't even that great at just 212 plate appearances). For more perspective the A's batters (so this excludes Milone), have hit as many home runs in their careers (413) as the Rangers and Red Sox combined for in 2011 alone.
Since 2008, the A's have the hit the fewest home runs in baseball despite the benefit of having nine true hitters swinging for the fences with just 483. With the crew we have now it seems unlikely we suddenly become a power threat. But just how anemic the home runs have been for these players - and granted many of them are very young and haven't had the time to build up career stats - is pretty staggering. Manny Ramirez as an addition would change the way this team looks. Heck he'd represent 57.3% of our club's career home runs if he joined the A's! But there is one thing to always remember, from this great post from danmerqury,
"acquiring a slugger simply for the sole purpose of getting a slugger, when you have the opportunity to get a better overall hitter? That's a bad move. There's no reason to covet someone like Mark Trumbo, who has tons of power but nothing else, adding up to a below-average hitter for a first baseman. Better sluggers don't necessarily make offense. Better hitters do."
Sadly, the A's don't have many of those in abundance either. But regardless, let's see what these guys can do, there's a reason you play the games.
For anyone interested I will be at FanFest today - all the way from beautiful Riverside, California - I think I win - drove the farthest honors. It'd be fun to meet any A's fans, e-mail me (address is in my profile) and maybe we can meet up and say hello!

So I'm wondering
are you in favor of signing Manny? From this post it sounds like you are.
Also, do you like the Gomes signing?
Have fun at FanFest! Wish I could’ve gone but Mrs. Blez ran in the Tinkerbell half marathon this morning and did it in her fastest time ever!

I've gone from absolute no to definite maybe
Because of how Slusser outlined it. Carter gets 50 games to prove himself… I’m not thrilled with that or the Gomes signing because I wanted a complete teardown. But Gomes seems like the kind of guy I can really root for so heart says yes while the brain may say no

hoping for
smith/gomes: 20-25 homers
Suzuki: ~15 home runs
Sizemore: ~13 homers
Reddick: 15-20 homers
Carter/Ka’aiahue: anywhere from 0 to 100
Snoochies
Taylor
I’d guess 10-15 HRs in 350-ish ABs. (big range, but that’s as precise as I’m willing to get with a guy like him.)
Most arguments are really about context.

Not a fan of signing Manny
The reason is a big one. The A’s need to have a homerun hitter that will stay with the team for a few years not a one year wonder. Chris Carter should be given every chance to be that hitter or even Allen. Look how Willingham did and now he is gone. So we are back to where we started and the same thing will happen if we sign Manny. A homerun hitter for 1 year and gone.
fanfest is going well!
nice interviews, David justice giving mad props to Oakland

I lost it when they read McCarthy's tweet about Suzuki's necklace.
He likened it to a candy necklace.
This. Team.

Manny
I would sign him if he can rub some confidence and baseball ‘smarts’ into some of the youth. From all accounts, Manny is one of the most intelligent offensive minds to ever play the game. Just sayin.
Tom Milone!
career SLG = .667!

HRs per at bat
If you want to look at the A’s top home run hitters in terms of home runs per at bat, here are the top 5 currently on the roster (obviously Michael Taylor’s rate is based on an extremely small sample size of just 30 major league at bats). No one else who’s expected to get regular playing time in 2012 has a rate any better than 1 per every 36 at bats…
Gomes – 1 per 20
Smith – 1 per 25
Ka’aihue – 1 per 26
Allen – 1 per 29
Taylor – 1 per 30
Um, excuse me:
Milone – 1 per 6!!!!!

Right handed power
It seems like the a’s braintrust is specifically interested in right-handed power. This goes back to frank Thomas and Matt Holliday. This is kind of misguided in my opinion. The most consistent power threats in recent years have been mostly left handed batters. Cust, swisher as a lefty, even matsui last year. I think Allen and reddick this coming will do fine if given the at-bats.
Coming up, it seems like choice and green have potential and they are righties.
This tram needs hitters…focusing on manny because he represents “right handed” power is not wise in my opinion.
Give Carter the DH at bats!
I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!

No kidding --
I’d like to see what Carter can do with 500 PAs as the A’s DH. Then decide if you think he’s “for real” or “not the answer”.

My son had his picture taken with him today
Surprisingly lean – I asked him if he lost weight!
He seemed really nice, but somewhat awkward and shy. When I think about Swisher and more recently Weeks, both have a kind of swagger (not arrogance), that just gives the appearance that they believe they should be in the majors, and they’ve always believed it. On a sample size of 30secs, I’m not sure Chris Carter believes that.
That said Nico is right we should see what Carter can do with 500PA (two years later than we should of) in the major leagues and then decide (what the hell do we have to lose? It’s not like he’s blocking some DH, and if by some miracle we compete, then we can DFH him, though I suspect if we do compete, he may have been part of the story.
