707's Own Jonny Gomes Near Deal With A's
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Jonny Gomes is nearing a deal with the Oakland Atheltics.
With Josh Reddick, Coco Crisp and Seth Smith already in the fold, plus guys like Collin Cowgill, Michael Taylor and Michael Choice coming up from the minors, the A's outfield appears to be rounding into form.
Gomes is a decent defender and he brings good numbers to the plate against righties (.375 OBP). The A's will probably platoon him with one of the younger guys. There's even a chance he serves as a sort of utility oufielder / pinch hitter because his bat does have a bit of pop to it (14 HR in 311 AB).
Jonny brings another veteran to a very young team in need of more experience. An interesting fact is that Gomes is the only major-leaguer from Petaluma, CA and bringing in a local guy also gives the fans one of our own to root for. If the A's aren't going to be a big-spending team, bringing in as many fan favorites as possible is a smart bet. Anything that might get a few more fans to come out for A's games sounds good to me.

Is the A's plan to lead the league in 4th outfielders?

You're remarkable in a funny way. Or funny in a remarkable way.
I always liked Gomes
and now Seth Smith and Gomes will be scheduled for surgery, joining the two together to make one good player.
A Kouzmanoff for the rest of us!
Splits for Seth Smith and Jonny Gomes:
Smith, versus righties: .290 / .364 / .518 / .377 wOBA / 125 wRC+
Gomes, versus lefties: .281/ .375 / .501 / .378 wOBA / 132 wRC+

I mastered my last album in Petaluma
and although I have yet to visit the Lagunitas Brewery, I am an avid fan of their beers.

Well Beane/Forst will have plenty to do come July....
I have to imagine Gomes is going to get a decent amount of DH appearances, kind of like a poor man’s Willingham. Unfortunately, this just takes even more at-bats away from Cowgill, who I think will be a decent OF. Although he’ll probably be a starter when Crisp, Smith and Gomes all get traded at the deadline.
Green will be up in September unless he falls apart.
Maybe even sooner if Crisp, Smith and Gomes all get dealt. Now choice would have to absolutely destroy at Midland and have a good couple months in Sac for a September callup.
Brandon Morrow is from Rohnert Park.
That’s almost Petaluma.

Rohnert knows how to put in an "h".
Jonny, not so much.

CC Sabathia is from Vallejo
I’d rather the A’s acquire him.

And they will, once he's solidly in his decline.

That fact that he is a "local"
is the only thing that appeals to me if he signs. I’ll cheer for him like any other A’s player but I still think they should just try out all their young guys more, what’s the difference if you know you won’t compete?

Friend:why do you love ripping on Jeff Francoeur?
Me: Because hes an idiot, who posseses huge physical tools but will not, nay, cannot, harness those tools into any sembelance of usable baseball skill and refuses to make any effort to do so. Hes like a tragic greek figure. doomed by his own stupidity and 80 raw power.
Your idea then might have been better than Billy's idea now,
but come to think of it, hey — how much difference can 6 years really make?

This is freakin hilarious
We always joke how we get players when their past their prime, etc., but it’s usually aging all-stars like Piazza, Thomas, Sheets, etc.
In this case, 6 years later, the dream of harendaman365 is finally fulfilled with an over-the-hill Johnny Gomes.
I expect you to buy a season ticket package in the OF and shed a solitary tear every time you see Johnny run out there. A 6-year long dream come to life, it really can’t get any better.

You have no idea
I found a list of players I wanted the A’s to get that I drew up during a boring math class in 2007. On it were, among others, Carlos Quentin, Ben Zobrist, Albert Callapso, and Jonny Gomes. If only I had an actual say…solitary tear

This gives me an idea for my FP post tomorrow
GET JURICKSON PROFAR, JAMESON TAILLON, MATT MOORE, MIKE TROUT AND EVAN LONGORIA!!!
You’ll thank me in six years.

I actually like the aquisitions of Gomes and Smith. If platooned they combine to create one very dangerous bat.
Can we get back to analyzing Seth Smith stats, splits and whips? More charts and graphs please!
Hmm
Interesting. It seems the A’s are trying to get as many OF’ers as they can. Gomes would bring pop and some power, but I’m not bought on his actual hitting abilities.
Oh, how interesting.
