A's Agree to Terms with Brandon McCarthy and Joey Devine
Athletics agree to terms with Brandon McCarthy and Joey Devine on one-year contracts, avoiding arbitration.
Aside from the huge YAY! that I'm feeling, does this mean anything else for the A's? What does our pitching rotation look like? Who opens the year in Japan? Who are the starting 5? What does our bullpen look like; how many spots do you keep open?
Will the loss of Outman and Moscoso be felt, and is there a way we can get through 162 games without having our youngest arms throw too many innings? Do you think the A's would be better served with using more pitchers than the standard 5 in a rotation?
Seriously, though. Who opens the season against King Felix (twice, I guess)?
But both baseball-related (I love McCarthy on the field) and off-the-field-related (Has anyone ever been a better baseball wife than Amanda McCarthy?), I feel some happiness in the off-season of despair.

Rotation of...
1. McCarthy
2. Colon
3. Braden (fingers crossed he’s healthy in time)
4. Godfrey
5. Milone
That’d keep Parker and Peacock’s clock from ticking anymore. And the general consensus is that they need some more season at AAA. Maybe Ross works his way into there as well. Things look thin, but there’s definitely talented help on the way.
I don't think Beane will be shy about using Peacock or Parker to open the season.
I’m not happy about that fact, but I think it’s true. The best five starts out of ST will probably get make the opening day rotation.
Peacock still has plenty of work to do on his changeup
and he only spent about a month in AAA before being a september call up, there’s no way billy rushes him to the bigs. He’ll get more time to refine his stuff in general in AAA
Parker never even pitched in AAA, and only made one appearance in the bigs, so he’ll definitely be in Sacramento come opening day
Snoochies
After what happened with Cahill and Anderson
I would not be at all surprised if Peacock and Parker start the season in Oakland. Personally I don’t agree with it, but the A’s have shown they are not afraid to push young pitchers and let them work through their issues in the major leagues.
Another case to keep them in AAA is to delay their arbitration clock
rather than be free agents in 2018, they could let them develop a little more in AAA and if (probably when) they trade colon and mccarthy by the deadline, bring them up and then they’ll be under control through 2019
Snoochies
I'm pretty sure the new CBA is designed to increase the number of Super 2s
Total years before free agency are a factor (and, on the other side, options), but I’m not sure the arbitration issue will play out the same from now on.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
there's also the whole 2012 is a lost season
why rush our prospects to the majors when it’s a done deal that we’re focusing on a couple years down the stretch?
Snoochies
I understand these things, as well as what you said below, and agree with them,
but we’ve seen before that Beane is too competitive to let service time and lack of AAA experience get in the way of putting together the best possible rotation. If Parker and Peacock are better options than Ross and Godfrey, they’ll be in the rotation.

That's not a terrible rotation
by any means. If Devine and De La Santos can shine, we’re not going to be terrible because of pitching
But will we score A run? ;-)

A lot of what I've read about Milone
pretty much boils down to: “He doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but he knows how to pitch”. Guys like that need a nominal amount of run support, I’m a-thinkin’. Does anyone know how close to ready Tyson Ross is? If he and/or Braden aren’t ready by Opening Day, Parker could wind up with a rotation spot. It’s going to be an interesting Spring Training…

Ross is healthy
He’s just completely struggled ever since his last injury – 7.61 ERA at Sacramento last year and 5.94 ERA in the Arizona Fall League. Wouldn’t want to have to count on him too much till he proves he’s able to be effective again.
I have strong suspicions that Ross isn't actually healthy.
For someone who’s posted a 3.74 career FIP in the MLB, he should be dominating Sacramento and the AFL. I wonder if his average fastball MPH hasn’t dropped or something. It wouldn’t surprise me. A healthy, effective 2012 campaign would, though.
In each game?...or for the entire season?☺

I'm expecting another low-cost veteran signing
Either before or during spring training.
He’ll probably be cringe-worthy.

How about
Livan Hernandez? Joel Piniero? Willie Eyre? Scott Kazmir?
I’m hoping for Harden.

Rockies signed him to a minor league deal

Livan Hernandez is also avaliable
Then we go get Blanton back from Philly and we’re three-fifths of the way to assembling the “All-Fat” rotation
If we use the all fat rotation
Can we please use Powell as the full time catcher?

They have to have a long man in the pen
Maybe not for the 2 games in Japan though. So you could see them take a Carignan or Wagner to Tokyo, then replace him with a Ross or Godfrey when they come to Oakland.
Yay! Brandon McCarthy!
Now if only Amanda convinces him to wear stirrup socks, all will be well with the A’s in 2012.

He's strictly a DH at this point
So they wouldn’t want Suzuki. Hopefully they sign Vlad or Damon so we don’t. I want Carter to DH every day for at least 3 months.

3 months? he's a lock for K record.
i kid because i love.
Yeah, I was thinking more they might want the really good, established 1Bman that...we don't have '-(

And DH Cabrera?
I guess they could do that and get Pena. Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure they (and everyone else) have no interest in Allen, Barton, Carter or Kila.

Take Barton for defensive purposes only?
Ala Doug Mientkiewicz?

They have Avila though, why would they want Zooks?
They need a DH (and I think I can safely say that there are 50 better DH options available to them (internally and via trade) than Suzuki.

Oswalt???
I read somewhere (I think dwish’s blog) about how the A’s should sign Oswalt. Has anyone heard of anything like this? We could sign him for 1 or 2 years and deal him at the trade deadline. 2 years would be a more enticing deal for whoever gets him for their playoff push. He should do well in the confines of the O.co. No???
Or he could be Ben Sheets 2.0
Why did the full rebuild stop? I thought the point was to get guys that could them in 2015 and beyond. Coco won’t. Colon won’t. Smith almost certainly won’t. Any other veteran they bring in won’t. Outman might have. Taylor, Carter, Allen, Cowgill, Reddick etc might, but you have to give them enough consistent, every day at bats to know. I get that MLB probably told Wolff and Beane to start spending, but there are smarter ways of doing it. Like throwing it all at Soler.
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true? Or is it something worse?
We'd trade Oswalt to acquire such a prospect.
Signing an Oswalt or Colon (or Brandon McCarthy) isn’t about how many games they win for Oakland in 2012. It’s about how good can they pitch in the first 3-4 months and what we can get for them at that point. Even if one of the above turns into Sheets 2.0, it’s worth a shot, especially when we’re not currently paying anyone anything and salary floor is an issue.
This shouldn’t affect Soler in any way, and I like throwing the house at him.

If everyone is expecting the A's to be competitive in 2015, why in the hell is there so much worry about the prospects
playing this year. If Carter, Taylor, ALLen, Choice, all come up in 2013, if they don’t show they belong by 2015, the whole rebuild is screwed. They can spend the whole year of 2012in AAA, dominate MLB in 2013 and 2014 and still be ready for 2015, and have that extra year of control. Which maybe what Billy is thinking. If they don’t dominate AAA, or show that they may become useful major leaguers this year, who cares about 2013.
Taylor is 26. Cowgill turns 26 in May. Carter is 25.
Now compared to me, that’s young. But in AAA years, er, not so much. It’s time to see what these guys are capable of at the ML level. I’m all for those three getting a significant amount of playing time this year. If any or all of them don’t pan out, Choice and Green are ripening on the vine.

2015 is the deadline to actually BE competitive
So if the prospects start gelling this year and by 2014 we’re putting up more W’s than L’s, it’s still mission accomplished. Should all the stars align, and one of guys does develop into a perennial All-Star, then theoretically because of the cash flow from the new stadium we might actually be able to sign a home-grown stud to a long-term deal. And we can stop being the fans that are always rooting for smart service time management.
What are the arguments against Milone starting?
Seems to me he proved what he needed to in the minors. Great at AA in 2010. Great at AAA in 2011. He impressed in his September call-up last year. And he’ll be 25 this year. He’s a textbook case of a guy ready for an extended look in MLB coming in to the new season.
Seems like the only real argument against Milone is that his very slow fastball will impede any major league success. However, it’s ridiculous to say that alone will prevent Tommy Milone from turning into a solid big league pitcher. Mark Buehrle is of course exhibit A as a staff ace with a soft fastball. You know who else can’t hit 90 on the radar gun and still tossed a perfect game? Our very own Dallas Braden.
The A’s have always been an organization that excelled in letting the unconventional flourish. One of my hopes for the season is to see the establishment once again proved wrong thanks to Oakland’s Tommy Milone.
I'd like to see Milone start.
He’s the one I’m most intrigued by. I like the non-overpowering crafty types.
