revamped 2012 lineup

2b weeks
of crisp
1b barton
of reddick
c suzuki
dh carter
3b sizemore
of smith
ss pennington

bench - allen, cowgill, recker, rosales

Is this it? Does anyone have any projections for this lineup?

I'm not sure what would be best: give allen and carter the spot at dh and the bench, or drop one of them in favor for Taylor or Ka'aihue. Personally, i would like Carter to be given a chance to show that his power from the minors can be used in the majors. On the bright side, we would get a full year of sizemore.

I mentioned this to Clip$ earlier...

but you may want to simply put your ideas in the existing Smith trade thread from the front page. This isn’t really substantial enough for a full fanpost.

At one point in my life I liked Dave Kingman more than Rickey Henderson. I was an idiot.

Okay, so this is going to be my first "meta" post

I’ve been fairly new to posting on AN. I like a ton of things about the site, but one critique I have is that I sometimes lose track of discussions in those 500+ comments that sprawl all over the place. I rather enjoy seeing fanposts with a narrower focus. I certainly think a “rosterbation” thread has enough discussion points to merit its own forum.

Some more analysis in the main post might have been nice. But I can enjoy a thread which is more along the lines of: Here’s an interesting topic, I don’t have much to say but here’s my take now please discuss. As a noob, it can be intimidating if the bar is raised to the high AN standard for fanposts.

Anyway, not trying to jump right into the fray or on you in particular the_rozeboom. But for my two cents I don’t mind some smaller topic fanposts.

Thanks rozeboom

And may I say kudos to you for being polite in your criticisms rather than just screaming GTFO at the original posters.

barton hitting 3? really

Ray Fosse thinks Pete Rose is a prick......

i'm being optimistic

I hoped 2010 Barton would reappear.

by stadiumlights on Jan 17, 2012 10:24 AM PST up reply actions

I think it might be something like

Weeks 2b
Crisp cf
Smith rf
Allen dh
Reddick lf
suzuki c
sizemore 3b
barton 1b
pennington ss

i think smith and reddick are interchangeable as well as suzuki as sizemore

suzuki AND sizemore

damn you lack of “edit” button!

This looks very likely to me

with Rosales, Recker, Cowgill and Carter on the bench. Reports are the A’s are still looking for another potential right-handed hitting platoon outfielder. Ludwick just signed with the Reds, so that leaves Cody Ross and Jonny Gomes as the most likely culprits. If that happens, then it probably forces Carter back to Sacramneto, along with Taylor.

by wcmori on Jan 16, 2012 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

Rosales just needs to leave

pack up and go

Billy Beane, what were you thinking!?

by guessatomo on Jan 16, 2012 10:13 PM PST up reply actions

After one injury-laden season?

I think not. It’s extremely rare to find someone who can back up all the infield positions with positive defensive value. He was a great pickup by Beane and should be back to his 2010 self next season.

by Furyan on Jan 17, 2012 6:00 PM PST up reply actions

We have a cheaper version of him

his name is eric sogard, and we don’t need rosales backing up the outfield or 1st base

by guessatomo on Jan 17, 2012 6:32 PM PST up reply actions

Rosales costs $600k this season

Sogard would make just over $400k. I’d rather pay $200k for the better player with more experience.

by Furyan on Jan 17, 2012 7:29 PM PST up reply actions

i can agree with this

it really depends who we want to see develop first, allen or carter.

by stadiumlights on Jan 17, 2012 10:26 AM PST up reply actions

i spoke too soon,

since we are still shopping around, its seems according to a’s news, ludwick and gomes are possibilties

by stadiumlights on Jan 16, 2012 6:48 PM PST reply actions

i hope

they stay away from those guys

Not sold on Sizemore

He’s a nice platoon player, but I don’t see him as more than a .250 hitter – just too many holes in his swing.

It would be stupid to push Carter and Taylor back to the minors – they will not grow a bit down there any longer.

by DubsDominate on Jan 16, 2012 11:18 PM PST reply actions

if he could put up another .249/.345/.433 season

I’d be more than happy, especially if he can pull that off as a stop gap between him and whoever our next “3B of the future” is

This

Especially if he continues to improve defensively. I’m actually excited to see Sizemore play 3B after a whole off-season and spring training of preparation.

I'm not seeing all that many holes

He struck out far too often last year, but he was well above his minor league marks. And he seemed pretty capable of drawing a walk. He’s got some power, too. So even if the batting average remains near .250 he’ll still be great if he keeps developing his walks and power numbers.

If anything, I’d advocate putting Sizemore in the heart of the lineup. Take some pressure off the (slightly) younger rookies.

I think Reddick will be every-day RF

Weeks 2B
Crisp CF
Reddick RF
Smith LF
Carter DH
Zook C
Sizemore 3B
Barton 1B
Penny SS

Assuming Barton sticks, of course.

Sizemore will be higher, I think

He hit .360/.481/.593 with RISP last year, .302/.409/.500 with men on base.

That at least shows he has a good approach with men on.

So, versus RHP:

2B Weeks
CF Crisp
LF Smith
3B Sizemore
RF Reddick
C Suzuki
1B Barton
DH Carter
SS Pennington

Good mix of RH/LH. vs. LHP, probably move up Reddick and Zook and put Smith down at 6 spot. Smith’s OPS vs RHP last year was a healthy .926, so he’s a pretty legit 3 hitter against any righty.

They really need to put Carter in there for a full year—-even if he Ks like crazy and hits only .210 or something, the power’s going to be there, so at worst he’s Mark Reynolds (3.0 WAR offense, -2.5 WAR defense in 2011) for the league minimum, and possibly more like the value of a Nelson Cruz or Carlos Pena. Not a superstar, but probably better than most of the other DHs teams have these days.

And, of course, if he hits that potential…which is very possible, as Ryan Howard had his first extended stay at 25 (88 games) and his first full season at 26. Carter just turned 25.

by LunaCI on Jan 18, 2012 11:46 PM PST reply actions

I think Allen will at least be the DH

if not the starting 1B, and hit 4th, at least, that’s what my hope is, and that he could stick there
