Who do you hope for in the 2012 draft?
Following a subject from Viva El Birdos, who do you hope the A's can nab with top pick(s) in the 2012 draft?
I'm hoping the a's can nab chris beck or victor roache with their first pick, travis jankowski or kyle zimmer or jake barrett with their second one, and anyone who falls out of those choices or carson fullmer with their third pick
as it stands, the a's have the 11th, 34th, 46th, 57th, and 69th picks in the first two rounds

They've tried this strategy in the past
It didn’t work.

Kenny Diekroeger, SS from Stanford
or Jameis Whitson, a high schooler who may elect to be a QB in the NCAA instead. Saw him on that ESPN high school QBs show with Trent Dilfer that had that kid from San Ramon Valley High.
Personally
i’d rather someone who could really stick at SS if they’re gonna draft a shortstop early, maybe a nolan fontana or someone like that
for some reason, i have a feeling that because of the new CBA, the a’s are really going to go the college route like last year.
Hello, i am inigo montoya, you took my stadium, prepare to die
Meaning wait til maybe the supplemental round to pick a SS
First pick, i see chris beck falling to us, or more like hoping he does

More pitchers?
I know you can never have enough, but still. Dearth of hitters in the system right now. I see a college infielder at 11, lotta high-priced prep guys after that.
I think they could grab a quality ss or 3b with a later pick
someone like nolan fontana who’s a solid defensive ss and an on base machine, or adam brett walker who may move to first
and who knows, maybe a solid high school shortstop falls down because of signability?

Someone who only pitched 30 innings (injury-plagued I'm guessing) is worth the 11th pick?
Is this year’s draft really THAT bad?
Yes he may have been injured
but he still has three above average pitches and really good control

Diekroeger sort of reminds me of Green, so that scares me.
He’s a large (too big for SS?) guy from a big name program with an inconsistent track record.
Victor Roache sounds like Michael Choice part 2.
Not that there’s anything wrong with Choice, but an infielder would be nice and there are plenty of them in this draft. Marrero from ASU would be good too, but he’s unlikely to fall to 11 (though Grant Green was seen as a top 3 guy at this point in 2009).
+1
I would love another michael choice.2, in the form of victor roache or adam brett walker (dude can mash, just k’s a lot…like choice)

Don't know the high school and college player names well enough
But I hope the A’s strategy is high risk high reword. A college player with a high upside with the 11th pick but then focus on high ceiling guys. (ie look for Billy Beane toolsy guys,) probably high schoolers.
In order to compete with the Ranger and Angels we are going to need to be lucky.

I dunno enough about the upcoming draft class to say exactly who
But I would really like to see a combination of high risk/high reward High School hitters along with a couple of up the middle bats from college to use our 1st and supplementary picks. Then I think use the next few picks on a couple of arms and maybe a college power bat that comes from a less established program, and see if we can develop him.
Gavin Cecchini, SS
His brother is in the Sox system. Gavin supposedly has the better bat and glove.

And I wanted his brother over Middlebrooks in a trade
If he’s got the better bat, then damn, this would be amazing.

I Would Range More Towards College Players
Then high school players. Keep drafting what the A’s are good at (pitching), and try to get a few power-hitting infielders.
Why college over HS?
They’ve been shying away from HS hitters in favor of college guys in recent drafts and it hasn’t resulted in a whole lot of success.

Because an advanced college bat will reach the majors quicker
like around when the a’s want to open up their new stadium, say around 2014 or 2015, and if it’s a bat like victor roache, wouldn’t you rather have someone like that making an impact to christen a new stadium?

Green and Choice are too early to declare unsuccessful
though both look like they could become at least big league regulars, and Choice could be a monster. Jemile looks like he could become an all-star. For the Green doubters, there weren’t a ton of guys left at 13 that year (Trout, Shelby Miller, Brett Jackson and Skaggs are the four guys taken in the 1st/Supplemental rounds that I would take over him at this point).
Those are three good college hitters we picked, and Desme could have worked out if not for a pretty bizarre circumstance.
I should have clarified
I meant outside of high 1st round picks. I can’t argue with those picks, especially not Choice or Jemile, as I liked both very much. I would just like to see some variety among our early picks, instead of just picking college guys because they’ll probably be ready sooner…

I'm not sure lack of variety is the problem
It’s not like the A’s have avoided HS picks early in the draft in recent years, it’s just that guys like Stassi, Cabrera, Shipman, and Lewis haven’t really amounted to much. The A’s really haven’t had much success recently drafting college or high school guys, so the problem seems to be deeper than just the experience level of recent draftees.
Shipman and Lewis are too early to tell
Lewis showed plenty of power, just needs to make a little more contact
Shipman showed tons of speed and patience (walked more than he struck out…as a 19 year old, which is insane) but again, contact issues. Still got on base at almost a .400 clip. However, you’re mostly right, early high school picks just haven’t panned out the way we’d like them to (tyler vail and rashun dixon included)

With the pile of pitching prospects we already have, our depressing lack of hitting prospects, and other teams unwillingness to trade hitters,
I think it’s imperative to use most of our top picks for position players. Obviously, the player with the highest value should be picked, but when it’s close, I’d choose the position player every time.
11th pick
At this stage, I’m thinking Victor Roache, Trey Williams, or Joey Gallo… power hitters
