Please No Cody Ross...PLEASE?
Look I understand that the A's depth chart in the outfield right now is not very good. I mean before the A's traded Ryan Sweeney, they had him making like Bugs Bunny in the outfield, being the lead candidate for all three positions.
But according to Jeff Fletcher, the A's are gauging their ability to sign Cody Ross. I'm not really loving the idea especially since Fletcher says that Ross was looking for a three-year deal and I'm not really in love with watching Ross play for the green and gold until the mythical opening of a new stadium in San Jose in 2015. Plus everyone hates Ross. I mean there's a Facebook page dedicated to hating him. Or maybe the A's should sign him? Maybe we should become baseball's version of the Raiders. Just go out there and start getting guys that everyone hates. AJ. Pierzynski, anyone? Anyone else we should pursue?
Still I'd rather see more of the unknown commodities playing, even if they are much more likely to fall flat on their face. Cowgill, Reddick and Taylor would be much more interesting to watch than throwing Ross out there daily. Plus, like I've said before, I'd personally rather go for the best draft pick possible even if it means fully tanking a season. To me, the A's have done too much band aiding over the last few seasons. And no, Ross isn't going to turn the A's into competitors and might not even make them any better. But I'm just not interested in watching players like Ross any more.
Maybe you feel differently but I'm just kind of done with that. It's time to let the unproven younger kids sink or swim and see what you've got and take the super high draft pick. Will it hurt? Oh yeah, but let's face it, we all know what we're in for in 2012. Let's take our medicine now in hopes of something greater.

Don't people hate Cody Ross because he is surprising good against them?
That’s a good kind of hate-able. Do it.

No, its not.
It leads you to believe he is better than he actually is because you see him the only time’s he is good. Kind of like how GMJ got a huge contract out of the Angels for 1 highlight play on Sports Center.
It would be sort of if the Mariners had thrown the farm at the A’s to trade for Joe Blanton, because Blanton is Cy Young when he faces the Mariners for whatever reason.
Even a blind squirrel is right twice a day.
Exactly, you're paying bargain bin prices for someone who is probably going to piss off Angel/Ranger/Mariner fans.

And bargain bin means a so-so bet for trade value.
He’d be a desired asset mid-season if he plays at his career averages or above.
I hate Cody Ross because whenever I see him I have the urge to punch him in the face.
"This must be heaven," he says.

No way!
Ross would have you believe thru talking to him he deserves a 3/18 deal, which incidentally is what Willingham would have cost to extend in September. Ross places his entire value on what he was able to do in a six week period to help win a championship. Why would you pay real money for a player who will at best decline from a mediocre season when switching to a better pitching league, and a worse hitter metric park. I absolutely believe either Cowgill or Taylor this next year could out perform Ross on both sides of the field.

I don't see how anyone could argue with that.
Unless it’s a price issue. And even at that…throw everything you can to sign him.
This is exactly what you and I were afraid would happen in the "Rebuild" thread, Tyler.
A half-assed rebuild, while trying to appease the “win every year” crowd by signing a nobody FA. If they want to sign a veteran, then sign a TRUE asset to a long term contract! Cody is no better than keeping Sweeney, IMO.

I'm not entirely sure it constitutes as a half assed rebuild
because of signing one veteran. I do agree though that if they were to sign someone Cody Ross is not the guy to sign. I want them to stay within the organization because there are enough players to plug into positions to be fine. We might win a few more games with some veterans but that’s not the point of this rebuild this time. We’re all afraid of the patchwork rebuilds we have seen previously. Let’s just hope they don’t let us down.
Yes, but this isn't like moving on a long term deal for Pujols.
This is a player that has only one year with a WAR of over 2.3 Why waste the ABs and money?

I'm with you on that.
He’s absolutely a player we should have no interest in. But out of the veteran options because I don’t see the team going with what they’ve got who is our best option? There really aren’t any guys I think we should go after.
We’re going to struggle to find enough at bats for Carter, Kila, Allen and Barton as it is. Cut it down to just Carter, Allen and Barton and there’s still not enough at bats to go around. Carter as full time DH, Barton at 1st but where does that put Allen with Taylor, Reddick and Cowgill likely to get the at bats in the outfield? Not that I am high on Taylor but I’d give him a chance over Allen if that’s the case.
I think you can bet on at least one of those guys being so depressingly terrible that it solves its own problem.
One of them if we’re lucky.
The problem is that you can say the same for Cody Ross

I'm all for a Cowgill/Reddick/Taylor starting OF
If they are determined to sign a veteran, get Gomes.
problem with Cowgill Redick Taylor
is who sits between Barton, Carter, Allen?
I think Barton is still one of our better hitters/BB player we have – I think 2011 was a down year and he will come out strokin’ the ball
Carter – its now or never – give the big boy a shot
Allen – again deserves to the play….
I say Cowgill the 4th OF (and knowing our injury issues he will be playing anyways)
LF Carter/Allen
CF Reddick
RF Taylor
DH Carter/Allen/Barton
1B Barton/Allen/Carter..
Lance "you sunk my" Blankenship
The problem with Barton
is that every year so far (except one) has been a down year, and we expect him to come out strokin the ball next year.
He’s a known commodity at this point, and I’d rather see more of Allen and Carter at the plate.
Barton is not a known commodity at this point, no
Especially since a large part of last season’s problems were injury-related. If he comes close to what he did in 2010 you don’t play Carter and Allen at his expense. You find other places to play them in addition to Barton.
Last of the Ninth - Photography
Every year so far (except one) ???
He came up in September of 2009 for his cup of coffee, which got him a shot at the 25-man in 2010, which he took advantage of, so much so that he was the automatic 1B in 2011, until he had his issues which seemingly have turned out to be health-related.
Until the huge fall-off, he was one of the highest OBP guys in the game.
Explain to us how that translates to 1) "every year a down year, and 2) him being a "known commodity, and 3) how you rationalize Barton being worse than Allen and/Carter when in fact AT HIS WORST (excepting the very very end of his 2011 year) he had a better BA and OBP than did Allen and Carter?
How could anyone be hung over,
and not care about this major crisis? The very thought of signing a meh veteran should sober up a person.

Nonsensical to sign Ross
The A’s have Taylor, Cowgill, Reddick, and Allen already here and these guys need at bats. In May or June, Mitchell will be healthy and will need at bats. By next year (or September in a rush scenario), Green and Choice could need at bats. All signing Ross does is take away at bats from players who need at bats to show whether they are part of the A’s future. Ross is not the kind of guy who is going to bring any sort of a real prospect in a mid-season trade, either.
I am embarrassed for the A’s front office. The A’s franchise is not much more than a punchline in national media stories, and with nonsensical moves like signing Ross for no good reason they deserve to be.

I have to wonder if the pressure to meet a minimum payroll is a factor
I can’t imagine MLBPA would be happy if the A’s payroll was lower than their revenue sharing check, even if they spent a lot on international free agents.
if they are really "seriously" rebuilding ...
gutting the team… why would you do this?
can I have Gio back?

I think we could do both.
Our three highest paid players are Suzuki, Balfour, and Fuentes, and all of them make under $6MM.
If we didn't have a decent amount of young SP
I’d say any starters, Burnett or any others of a similar crapness – more likely for them to have a good half season and build up some trade value.

I don't see a problem with this
If we flip him for a low level prospect, that’s net value. If he’s a 4th outfielder, then who cares?

Honestly I'd rather see what Miller could do
as opposed to having Ross as a fourth outfielder. But yeah, some team might be willing to give something for him at the trade deadline so in that sense it makes sense.

You mean Mitchell?
Last I heard, he’s not slated to be ready by the start of the season (knee surgery). That leaves the A’s with Reddick, Cowgill, and Taylor, who’s still not very good. They pretty much have to pick up somebody.
He isn't? Did someone pick him up?

So, just to be clear, thats a big yes on Miller?
What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.
I get the idea of signing a veteran outfielder on a 1 year deal.
Just because there’s no reason to hand starting positions over to unproven young guys. Plus you can never have too many MLB quality players. And of course there’s the issue of the “salary floor” (which I’d rather spend on Roy Oswalt, to be honest). So I support going after an outfielder for less than $5 million but….
Pleeeeeeeease not that douchebag.
Oswalt
I would much rather sign Oswalt and hope to flip him. If Oswalt signs, you get a few benifits. First he starts, thus that is one more guy to keep Parker and the other kids in AAA. 2nd, the A’s get a ton more for Oswalt if he is health in June or July than the would any other pitcher still a Free Agent or on their staff. 3rd, if MLB wants the A’s not to have a 25 million dollar budget, much better to get one good trading chip (Oswalt) than a few bad ones (Ross).
If he is health, I would almost say I would pay him anything…15 million, with 5 of it at signing. Look at as keeping the other 29 teams happy that the A’s payroll made 40 million and you are investing in keeping the young kids down and the A’s get a nice prospect or two come July.
Ludwick or a Ross will tell the A’s nothing about their team in two years and infact push back a Taylor or someone like him.
To what problem?

I mean his OBP is 1.000 with the A’s in his career. Come on. Let’s get that guy in the line up!
I already miss Cody Ross
If this involves flipping him for Melky Cabrera, I hope you all will change your minds.

Supplemental Draft Pick
If Cody doesn’t get flipped midseason, could potentially qualify for Type B per Elias. But we would have to offer him arbitration and hope someone else wants to give him a multi-year deal. Otherwise the A’s would have to resort to showing the Facebook page to the arbitrator.
My friends, welcome to extended mediocrity.
I ratger see any of our 4A high strike out outfielders than Cody Ross.
I'd rather see if JD Drew has any tread on his tires than Ross
but mostly the A’s might as well play the kids and try to build something.
But seriously, folks....
I'd rather they didn't sign him because he's like to be overpriced and overrated

The A’s should commit to this rebuilding and let the kids get all the ABs they can. As for meet the min payroll requirement, they should tell MLB they will increase the payroll when they allow the A’s move to SJ.

OK with Ross-types
As much as I like the idea of sticking Taylor & co. out there and taking lumps in the name of development thre must be a fallback option. If your young guys are all hitting .200 it’s not good for them to be in Majors. Mentally, it’s not good for pitchers to get zero run support — it will change the way they pitch. So, the A’s have got have a few MLB-proven bats on hand.
The I would rather they sign someone like Gabe Gross to a MiLB contract.
I see no advantage to signing someone, who wants daily ABs & a 3-year contract, that isn’t a bonified star

The A's have to sign someone this offseason
Cody Ross? eh…it smacks a little of the Emil Brown signing, but at least Ross had his post-season glory.
Agree with others who would rather sign pitching depth to one-year deals – Oswalt would be sweet. And what up with Rich Harden?
Cody Ross?
Bleh. He’s not a very good player, and three years is out of the question. Give the young guys a chance, because we won’t contend in 2012. At least say what we really already have.
I don't like the Cody Ross idea because
1. He sucks.
2. He’s a Type B Free Agent.
3. He costed 6.3 Million last year so will probably make around that.
4. He blocks the younger guys.

Agree with this.
There is no point at all. The A’s need to suck as hard as possible until 2015, if rebuilding is their stated goal. There is an outside chance that Cody Ross, however inevitably overpaid, could help them win baseball games.
If you’re going to try to stockpile draft picks and trade your assets and sign international players so you can a) be good a few years from now; and b) encourage as few people to show up and see games in Oakland as possible to support your San Jose meme, then signing Cody Ross is a terrible idea.
