Open Thread: Game 158 - A's at Angels
POST GAME NOTE: FOR WHATEVER REASON, THE RECAP MAY NOT BE SHOWING UP ON THE FRONT PAGE BUT YOU CAN GET TO IT BY CLICKING HERE.
Having ended the Angels' division hopes last night, tonight the A's take aim at the wild card. Guillermo Moscoso, whose middle name is, "drive to deep left-center field...but it's playable..." faces off against Jerome Williams, who has 3 wins since 2005 and who also has 3 wins since August 21st.
The A's enter play 20 games back with 5 to play, causing the more stat-minded folks to predict Oakland will miss the playoffs this year. Others simply eyeball the starting lineups, notice that Cliff Pennington is batting 6th, and laugh. Or cry. Or both.
Speaking of which, Baseball Press seems to believe that the lineups will look a lot like this:
UPDATE, 6:06pm: Pennington has been scratched (possibly due to fan laughter). Move Suzuki, Allen, and Sizemore up, and Eric Sogard is at SS, batting 9th.

Oh, those Giants. Comedy. Fontenot had a play on a ball, ran into the umpire, and fell down. Boom- 2 runs score.
They are down 4-1 in the 1st.

It took me so long to be interested in a film about reali life where a short chubby guy is playing a tall skinny guy.
Plus I was at the Hatty walkoff game, which means there’s actors playing me sitting in the stands, thats so weird haha
Under the tarp?
just kidding!

I need to dig out my ticket or ask my friend I went to the game with but I was sitting right across fromthe KC bullpen
and I was making a ton of loud obnoxious comments about how crappy Byrd looked warming up :)
But its weird that theres people playing all of us on film, isnt it? haha never thought that would happen!
Well if you were at the game, they filled the stadium with people to re-enact it.
So, by proxy if you were there, there was an actor/extra in your seat cheering AS IF THEY WERE YOU! DAMN YOU MOVIES!!!!

Barton better light spring training up.
by player20 on Sep 24, 2011 6:42 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
It's not either/or
If Barton’s healthy and looking good the A’s may well shift Allen to COF. In fact, he may need to play all 3 OF positions.

I'm very curious to see how Barton looks in ST -- how much of his failure was him and how much was actually the shoulder.
I do worry that even if his shoulder WAS a big factor, he may be a little mentally messed up after this season. :(
"This must be heaven," he says.

I like him.

LOL, that's because currently he does
I saw great potential in his “short power swing” early on. I like the way he moves at 1B, tracks balls in the air, runs the bases, all signs to me that he has some natural baseball abilities/sense. I see him being competitive/determined enough to work on his weaknesses and figure it out. And his former teammates said, “This guy can hit,” which tells me he has the recommendation of guys who might know.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
He's a very difficult guy to try and pin down, he's not like Weeks, who we know is going to be very good.
But he does flash the most power we’ve had here since Big Mac. So there’s that :)
He's a much better fielder, and better/faster baserunner than I expected
Yes, Weeks will be good…if he can stay healthy. He’s kind of on the Coco Crisp track.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

Thanks, Kyli. The ones I hate are the jerks like A-Rod.
I wish the CoJacks and Kouz’ had that type of talent. This is why I like Gio, Dallas, Ellis, etc. They’re the nice guys. Us kids need role models that are good people.
"Trying not to rec a "F**k the Giants" post is like trying not to look at boobs."
Why would you want our players to tank?
I want massive success to all players who wear the gold alts.
I don't actually want him to tank, I just don't think he can lift a car with his pinky finger.
I also like massive success for everyone, but there are many people here who disagree. So. Y’know. Girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."
You're partially vindicated.
Allen has hit worse than Conor Jackson for the A’s this year. As a matter of fact, Allen has been the worst hitting regular in the A’s lineup since he took over starting 1B duties.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

I will only be vindicated when people spend time trashing him during games he's not even playing in.
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."
He has struck out far too much
But he has also hit in pretty terrible luck in terms of line drives ripped right at people both on the infield and outfield. Kind of like how DDJ has actually been very disappointing, but has also had some of the poorest luck on the team. Both can occur at the same time.

DDJ is definitely better than his numbers.
So typical a decent player has his career worst BABIP here, ugh I hate it when that happens.
The strike outs aren't a big deal if he can at least maintain a good walk rate during slumps.
But his walk rate is abysmal which, combined with the strike outs, indicates a fundamental inability to recognize pitches. This is also supported by the fact that he swings at 37% of pitches out of the zone, a terrible rate. It’s a bad sign when your approach is more Kouzmanoff than Cust.
