Open Thread: Game 129 (Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees) (cont)

Coco Crisp homered (yes, really) in the first inning to give the A's the early 1-0 lead, but the Yankees have stormed right back to tie the game. Luckily, it could have been worse. Suzuki couldn't throw out a runner on a pitch-out (to be fair, it may have been partially Cahill's delivery), but he did pounce on a ball that never went more than a few feet away from the plate to get a much-needed second out with runners at second and third. Cahill got a huge K to end the inning, and we head to the fifth, still tied.

I was wondering what would have happened on that Nuñez hit

if neither side has realized it was a fair ball. Suzuki would have thrown it back to Cahill, Nuñez would have stayed around home plate. When Cahill stepped onto the rubber, would that be a balk? If not, at what point would the play have been called dead? Would they have let Cahill throw another “pitch”? And if the batter didn’t swing, just consider it another throw to a base in the same play? How does that work?

What if it was still a live ball and Cahill threw it and Nuñez hit it? Is that interference by Nuñez on a live batted ball?

I think the rule would have been once Zook threw it back to Cahill

and Cahill toed the plate, then the game goes on as if it was never a “hit”.

but then again

as I think about it, the ump would have to let the play continue until someone figured out what was going on. so the ump would stand there and see if the batter/ runner runs or someone gets tagged…

hey little girl

by ChickenStanley on Aug 24, 2011 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly - I'd think the ump waits for one of two things to happen:

1. The batter is safe
2. The batter is out

For example, if Nuñez walked far enough away to take a practice swing, he could be called out for being “out of the baseline”. But I’d think something has to give, though it’s possible Cahill touching the rubber is that something.

The runner is out as soon as he gives up on a play.

So as soon as he steps back for a practice swing or steps in the batters box in an act to be ready for the next pitch would signify he has given up on the previous play and would be out.

The Yankees had to do everything literally perfectly, from Granderson making a perfect quick throw right to Cano and Cano firing a strike over the bag at 3B without so much as cocking the arm. You go for three there every time.

I think it was a needless chance to take.

Being on 3rd there just lets you score on a single sac fly/error/infield hit/other shenanigans. We had zero outs, and a base hit would have scored him. Instead, we allowed the Yankees to make a play, and now the game is still tied.

by Rebuilding Season on Aug 24, 2011 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay, let's play this game.

He’s already at 2B. If he succeeds, it’s 3B no outs. If he fails, it’s 1 out no one on.

Successful: +0.293
Failure: -0.892

In other words, the break even point is pretty much exactly 75%. You succeed 3 times and fail once, and you’re looking at a net gain.

The odds of the Yankees successfully throwing Weeks out on that hit is WAY lower than 1 out of 4.

How does a not-fast runner get a bunt hit

when everyone knows he’s bunting? Throw him a curve or run a fastball in. And, you know, field the fricking bunt better.

I'm here, but who was DP again?

I met a lot of people at AN Day, and it’s hard to remember everybody…

That's kinda true.

No real black holes…but a lot of meh production.

He continues to really mash LHPs.

But so far he doesn’t hit “everyone” well enough to compensate for “eh” defense.

And whether you anticipate his "vs LHP" or "vs RHP" to regress more

I like the guy, and I’m still hopeful, but I doubt he’s the answer long-term. He strikes me as another “good tweener” who holds a spot down for “the real guy”.

I'm sure -

but which will regress more is important.

Aint going to win in the playoff with mediocre production from that postion and RF the way it is

Says the man who does not like SSS

He’s facing a lefty of course he’s going to hit.

I am talking about spending money and upgrading it to at least league average or better offense from that position. This team needs quite a few upgrades but if they can sign Willingham and get improvement from the other corner outfield then things will be much better.

I know he has never played 3rd before he came here in majors but I am talking about a real upgrade.

by Trainman on Aug 24, 2011 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions

(he's at 10% above league average)

Also, who do you have in mind? There’s nothing on the FA 3B market.

by danmerqury on Aug 24, 2011 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know

You guys follow all that stuff. Might have to trade something to get something.

All I know is I don’t think he is the answer. I guess time will tell.

by Trainman on Aug 24, 2011 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed. I'm tired of it only being 300 feet around the bases in Oakland.

Although, we’ll miss all of Weeks’ inside the park homers.
