Adios, Kouz

In a completely expected turn of events, the A's traded Kevin Kouzmanoff today to the Rockies. Before you start ordering your Ian Stewart jerseys, MLBTR says it's for a PTBNL or cash, so if we do get a player in return I'd expect it to be a Bruce Billings-type guy.

This rivals Alex Anthopolous' acquisition of a draft pick in exchange for a bad player with a bad contract as the least shocking news of the day.

Well

there was the discussion in dan’s thread, this fanpost, and your fanshot, so I’d say we have the Kouz news covered.

my comments were brief so I can just post my comment here and delete my fanshot.

“Good for Mr. Kouzmanoff. He said all the right things when he was sent down, played about as well as he could have potentially played, and now might get another shot.

I don’t imagine that we will get anything of value in return for him at this point but I would be interested to see who we get back if it is not for cash considerations.

Good for him. I hope he does well at the big league level against the Giants especially. "

I had high hopes for him when he was traded to the A's, but it never panned out.

I have no bad feelings toward him. I wish him the best.

Why would anyone involved be disappointed?

The A’s didn’t want him anymore, and this will allow him a good shot at getting back into the show. Win-win for everyone.

To be honest, I voted for the A's.

It had to be a big disappointment, that a player they invested that much in didn’t work out the way they wanted. I’m sure they were hoping he would improve, rather than regress.

One observation I want to add to the discussion

Especially considering he was a 4-year major league player who undoubtedly once thought he had established himself as a big leaguer and left his minor league days behind, Kouz was the consummate professional about being sent back to AAA.

He did what every player should do, but many cannot do: Shut up, be gracious, and play well enough that someone will want you. I respect him a lot for that.

It's the money, stupid.

Kouz was still getting paid his major league salary as in his contract, so why would he have any reason to act unprofessional? Isn’t that the purpose of having a contract, knowing you are protected financially regardless of whatever decision your team made on you?

by EstadosUnidos on Aug 23, 2011 11:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Because players, being human and full of ego like most humans are,

often sabotage their own interests and mouth off or sulk, or both? (That’s my answer, stupid.)

Listen, IDIOT

You can bet the A’s were looking at Kouz’s contract with a fine tooth comb to see if they can avoid paying him after sending him down to minors. Any bad behavior from Kouz and the A’s would have cause to cut him and not pay him. You have to be dumb as a summer squash to think Kouz’s contract has nothing to do with his behavior. By acting up, Kouz would lose his salary and any hope for a future contract with another team.

You can ask the same question in reverse.

Kouz will still get paid full salary according to his contract regardless, so why would he have any reason not to act like a jackass? He could mouth off against the organization and play like a slacker and still get his $4.75 million. He chose to be professional instead. That’s the point.

All contracts have behavior clause in them. By acting up, Kouz woukd have given the A’s precisely what they wanted, i.e. not having to pay him.

Easy win for us. Love that Beane made that deal.

Kouzmanoff: 3.2 WAR + whatever we get for him
Sogard: -0.1 WAR + still with us

Hairston: 0.1 WAR
Cunningham: 0.8 WAR + still with them

Trade won….unless Cunningham goes berserk and Sogard is terrible. Could happen, but Kouz was so good last year that trade is one you always make. Hairston is such a mediocre talent, the deal was basically Kouz for Cunningham, you’d think 3Bs are harder to come by than OFs….so, yeah.
