Open Thread: Game 123 (Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics) (cont)
We head to the bottom of the fifth inning; the A's were down 2-0 early, but have made a comeback. Willingham's double tied the game, everyone's favorite player, Brandon Allen, broke with tie with a sac fly, and later hit an exciting triple to give the A's a 5-2 lead.

Vince keeps acting like if Jones didn't bobble the ball Allen would've had an inside-the-park homer
More likely, Gallego would have held Allen at third because Jones would have got the ball in more quickly.

There has been a lot of attention on how the number of African Americans in the MLB is declining
Next year, if we have Weeks, Allen, Carter, Taylor and maybe Miller and Crisp on our team then I think that we could have the most African Americans in a starting lineup out of any MLB team
I will be pleased too,
and we will probably see all of them on the roster by the time Spetermber callups roll around

While I am probably lower on the expectations for BA than most, I’ll give him this – I look forward to watching his at bats. I don’t really know if I can say that for too many A’s of late.

i wonder about his psyche at this point.
not only that the A’s trade for a power-hitting 1B, but also that he’s taking what may have been his ABs, and thriving…
I wouldn't worry about his psyche.
He surely must realize that he’s a terrible defender. He hopefully has the confidence to know that he’s a good hitter.
i've been worried about his psyche since he was first called up
he seems to be particularly streaky, and a notoriously slow starter
He always struggles at a new level, but then mashes.
It’s crazy to think he’d do any different in the majors.

He needs to motivate himself
by saying that he will strive to become one of the better DHs in the league. It might actually take pressure off of him knowing that he doesn’t have to worry about his shoddy defense
by Rygoslinglover on Aug 17, 2011 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions
That would be great if he was good enough for that
He would be cheap bc I don’t think DH’s command high salaries. And if he mashes, that would be such a force to have in the lineup. He would basically be a PH in interleague play in NL parks though.
by Billy Frijoles on Aug 17, 2011 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions
i'd have no problem with that
especially as it seems the league is trending to lessening the number of interleague games, anyway.

Btw. this was not sarcastic
I find it much easier to find a point in thread if there is my comment there (stays white as opposed to all the yellow ones)
2011 Oakland Athletics: We have Cy Young pitchers and make yours look like it, too
Because we don't know what Napoli would have done
if he had played. Two issues here:
1. If a player is only capable of playing X times per year — eg, like Landon Powell — you can’t take the WAR he collects in the games he does play and extrapolate it for games he does not.
2. It has been suggested that Napoli, due to his attitude and not being a team player, has an adverse effect on the team. I don’t know that I really believe this, but if it is true it would not be reflected in Napoli’s WAR. Therefore, that suggestion is not rebutted by calculating WAR.
But just generally, WAR is a stat that reflects what a player did do, not what he would do if he were to play more games. It is not a projection stat. We always observe that fact whenever WAR is debated, but then people go and use it as a projection anyway.
Being wrong about something you’ve worked on is a blessing, not a curse, and people are so invested in being right that that gets lost. —Graham MacAree
I know.
It wasn’t a straight extrapolation. In the interest of giving a conservative estimate, I docked his numbers quite a bit. Not only that, but assuming that Mathis has some kind of positive value that catcher defense metrics aren’t picking up, I gave him credit for that too.
Oh, OK.
I guess I was misled by your phrasing of “I calculated it”.
Being wrong about something you’ve worked on is a blessing, not a curse, and people are so invested in being right that that gets lost. —Graham MacAree
Yeah, it was definitely a really fudgy conservative estimate.
And even then…the difference was something like 130 runs.
Legitimate concerns
still, the “we don’t know what would happen if he played” doesn’t mean you can’t make an educated guess. We don’t know what would happen had the A’s had Pujols instead of Barton this year, but we can safely guess they would have won more games. Exactly how many is open to debate, but an educated estimate can be made based on their past performances.
In case of Napoli and Mathis there is enough sample to make a decent guess
2011 Oakland Athletics: We have Cy Young pitchers and make yours look like it, too
I'm fine with making an educated guess.
Because Dan said “I calculated” and measured his guess in total wins, I assumed he was just extrapolating WAR numbers. I assumed erroneously, apparently.

I feel like he just tries to hit home runs all the time… sit back and think oppo, react inside. Luckily this guy was trying to let him hit home runs.
I like the part where Allen came up and his average said .581.
Then Sweeney came up at .288. Mortal.

Brandon Allen has the power to make Melvin forget everything he learned
while at Chiropractic School and simultaneously has the power to counteract the spell Melvin has been put under with his crush on Conor Jackson. So, Jackson won’t be receiving daily massages from Melvin any longer. Only Brandon Allen has these powers.

Um, the reason he was at 1B was because we didn't have one since Barton imploded.
Now we have one. So ConorJackson can go back to the outfield. It’s not like we got him to be a 1B, or this was intended to be forever. It was a “Fuck, what now?” thing.
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."
He's played 1B like twice as much in his career though.

that was hilarious
"BA doesn't stand for Batting Average. It’s Brandon Allen, as in the percentage of a hitter’s worth compared to Brandon Allen. Ted Williams, at his best, was only 4/10th of the hitter Brandon Allen is today." - YonYonson
i could almost see vince listening to it sort of flinching.

Well that sounded ridiculous

They are making a special section for filipino heritage night? did I hear that correctly?

If it's the same as Italian night, it's a special ticket you buy and I think they stick you in one section together.

For the non-TV people:
It took so long, because there was a small collision at the plate, Suzuki raised his arms (both hands in his glove, with the ball in it), then showed the ump the ball in his hand.

Just saw the last play of game
That was a great play by Suzuki to block off the plate and get the tag. Good throw by DDJ – but I didn’t realize how bad he screwed up the fielding. He should be buying Suzuki a nice dinner tonight for saving his ass there – that was just awful.
I wonder if we can blame that partly on the Raiders
He got to the ball right on the edge of the football field — and football really tears up the grass in the outfield. He could definitely have gotten a bad hop there.

I don't think in this case
It is possible, and I know the field was in pretty bad shape after last week’s exhibition game. But, looking at that replay the ball went right under his glove, I think he started to come and thinking of where to throw before he had it – looks like it luckily hit off his foot to stay close too otherwise the run defiinitely scores. But, good recovery by making a very good throw to get the out.

I'm glad I waited to listen to the ending before I got out of the car
Nervous ending but a win’s a win.
On another note I thought I heard someone introduce himself as “emperor nobody” while listening to A’s talk (when they were talking to Gio and Fautino), though all I got was “nobody” so I’m not 100% if it was EN or not.
I know lots of us have used this guy's photo before...
