Open Thread: Game 123 (Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics) (cont)

We head to the bottom of the fifth inning; the A's were down 2-0 early, but have made a comeback. Willingham's double tied the game, everyone's favorite player, Brandon Allen, broke with tie with a sac fly, and later hit an exciting triple to give the A's a 5-2 lead.

Vince keeps acting like if Jones didn't bobble the ball Allen would've had an inside-the-park homer

More likely, Gallego would have held Allen at third because Jones would have got the ball in more quickly.

There has been a lot of attention on how the number of African Americans in the MLB is declining

Next year, if we have Weeks, Allen, Carter, Taylor and maybe Miller and Crisp on our team then I think that we could have the most African Americans in a starting lineup out of any MLB team

That would be great if he was good enough for that

He would be cheap bc I don’t think DH’s command high salaries. And if he mashes, that would be such a force to have in the lineup. He would basically be a PH in interleague play in NL parks though.

2011 Oakland Athletics: We have Cy Young pitchers and make yours look like it, too

by elcroata on Aug 17, 2011 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Because we don't know what Napoli would have done

if he had played. Two issues here:

1. If a player is only capable of playing X times per year — eg, like Landon Powell — you can’t take the WAR he collects in the games he does play and extrapolate it for games he does not.

2. It has been suggested that Napoli, due to his attitude and not being a team player, has an adverse effect on the team. I don’t know that I really believe this, but if it is true it would not be reflected in Napoli’s WAR. Therefore, that suggestion is not rebutted by calculating WAR.

But just generally, WAR is a stat that reflects what a player did do, not what he would do if he were to play more games. It is not a projection stat. We always observe that fact whenever WAR is debated, but then people go and use it as a projection anyway.

by iglew on Aug 17, 2011 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I know.

It wasn’t a straight extrapolation. In the interest of giving a conservative estimate, I docked his numbers quite a bit. Not only that, but assuming that Mathis has some kind of positive value that catcher defense metrics aren’t picking up, I gave him credit for that too.

by danmerqury on Aug 17, 2011 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, OK.

I guess I was misled by your phrasing of “I calculated it”.

by iglew on Aug 17, 2011 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, it was definitely a really fudgy conservative estimate.

And even then…the difference was something like 130 runs.

by danmerqury on Aug 17, 2011 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Legitimate concerns

still, the “we don’t know what would happen if he played” doesn’t mean you can’t make an educated guess. We don’t know what would happen had the A’s had Pujols instead of Barton this year, but we can safely guess they would have won more games. Exactly how many is open to debate, but an educated estimate can be made based on their past performances.

In case of Napoli and Mathis there is enough sample to make a decent guess

by elcroata on Aug 17, 2011 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm fine with making an educated guess.

Because Dan said “I calculated” and measured his guess in total wins, I assumed he was just extrapolating WAR numbers. I assumed erroneously, apparently.

Melvin is clueless if he thinks not bringing up Carter, Taylor, and myabe Cardenas are not moves that will help us win.

Look at Weeks and Allen. They are already our 2 best position players. We need to get rid of CoJack and all the CoJack type players we have and nring up our young guys.

Just saw the last play of game

That was a great play by Suzuki to block off the plate and get the tag. Good throw by DDJ – but I didn’t realize how bad he screwed up the fielding. He should be buying Suzuki a nice dinner tonight for saving his ass there – that was just awful.

by longtimeasfan on Aug 17, 2011 5:06 PM PDT reply actions

I wonder if we can blame that partly on the Raiders

He got to the ball right on the edge of the football field — and football really tears up the grass in the outfield. He could definitely have gotten a bad hop there.

I don't think in this case

It is possible, and I know the field was in pretty bad shape after last week’s exhibition game. But, looking at that replay the ball went right under his glove, I think he started to come and thinking of where to throw before he had it – looks like it luckily hit off his foot to stay close too otherwise the run defiinitely scores. But, good recovery by making a very good throw to get the out.
