Open Thread: Game 119 - Actually Game 1 - A's vs. Rangers

"Don't just stand there, Kurt; tweet something funny!"

Let the Brandon Allen Franchise Saving Era begin. Susan Slusser confirms that Allen has been called up, along with pitcher Bruce Billings, with Adam Rosales and Jordan Norberto sent to AAA.

That's good because last night the A's brought the circus with them. And I mean that quite literally, as Cliff Pennington did quite a bit of juggling, the offense pulled a disappearing act against a clown, and to top if off Brandon McCarthy was sawed in half.

Today, Trevor Cahill takes the mound against Colby Lewis, a matchup we saw roughly 53 times last season. Brandon Allen is not just on the roster, he's in the lineup as noted below as posted by Baseball Press and possibly first noted elsewhere. Why Sweeney so low in the order, and Sizemore so high in the order, against a RHP? Bah.

Maybe only Washington has worse QB’s.

Tarvaris Jackson doesn't look like a starting NFL quarterback.

I don’t see why Charlie Whitehurst can’t outplay him in the preseason and take his job. I do think the Seahawks are in trouble, especially if Russell Okung’s injury is significant.

Seattle has to play the NFC East, which isn't favorable.

Their other non-division NFC opponents are the Bears on the road (not an easy place to play) and the Falcons. On the good side, they do play in the NFC West and get the Bengals and Browns. I think 5-11 is pretty reasonable.

Yeah Seattle is effed.

Mostly just because of their QBs. They made some decent pickups, but it’s just going to be a complete disaster between Jackson and Whitehurst.

I still don't think the Cardinals can stop the run.

Last year, they were the worst team in the NFC in rush defense. The Rams have made solid under the radar moves in getting Sam Bradford a starting wide receiver (Mike Sims-Walker) and a decent safety in Quintin Mikell.

Also, the Rams have a suitable backup for Steven Jackson now in Cadillac Williams. Donnie Avery, who didn’t play a down last year, is the Rams’ best receiver that will be back giving Bradford a deep threat. With that said, I think the Rams win the NFC West.

Also, Ben Leber was signed by the Rams.

He’ll be starting for them, so he’s an upgrade although it may be slight.

Rodger Saffold was such a great draft pick by the Rams last year, too. He could make the Pro Bowl this year.

The Cardinals better hope Kevin Kolb really pans out.

A second-round pick and one of the NFC’s best cornerbacks was a big price to pay for Kolb.

"You're all like big, fat failure turtles." - Edge

by Rated-R Superstar on Aug 13, 2011 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm optimistic about the offense.

Hue Jackson worked wonders with the offense last year, and guys like Jacoby Ford and Louis Murphy will only improve with more playing time. Jason Campbell is getting another year with the young guys, too. Darren McFadden and Michael Bush make a great running back duo. Kevin Boss doesn’t have Miller’s hands, but he’s a good route runner with great blocking skills.

Defensively, they have to get better at stopping the run. If they can be average at that, the team should be fine defensively. Young guys Matt Shaughnessy, Rolando McClain and Lamarr Houston will be better, especially Houston and McClain in their second years respectively.

Cornerback depth is the biggest question mark defensively. DeMarcus Van Dyke looked lost. Walter McFadden looked even more lost. Those guys are competing for the number three cornerback job. Jeremy Ware didn’t make any standout plays, and I feel as if he has the inside track based on last year. It’s too bad rookie Chimdi Chekwa is hurt because maybe he could be making an impact. Sterling Moore looked the best, but he made plays late in the fourth quarter. The cornerback situation beyond Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson really needs resolving.

It's adjusted for his home park.

StatCorner had Michael Taylor’s park adjusted wOBA at .408 two games ago. (It hasn’t been updated yet since.)

Interesting

I wonder what they mean by “adjusted for his home park”. I can not imagine they are just multiplying his wOBA with whatever factor they have for Sacramento.

On the other hand, I find it hard to believe that PCL as a whole plays to be 4% above average pitchers league. Also, FanGraphs has his wOBA at .383.

I’m just curious and not trying to take anything away from MT’s success.

SIRHAN never was behind RFK, only in front
NO bullets struck RFK from in front
MANY witnesses saw MULTIPLE GUNS
CESAR told MULTIPLE LIES about his gun and when he fired it
SIRHAN likely Manchurian Candidate hypnotized to fire wildly at RFK to distract from real killers, to point where even HE thinks he shot RFK

I mean, it's not like the Church Committee in Congress

didn’t find likely conspiracy in the JFK hit in 1979.

Much of what we’re told, IMO, is only believable because it carries the imprimatur of authority telling us it’s accurate and serious. Upon objective examination we often find the official version of things to be just not plausible, but the inertia of our subjugation to the authorities’ versions of events and the ostracization we imagine we’ll face if we challenge those accounts allows their version of events to become, more often than not, the unassailable record of those events.

But seriously, folks....

by B-E-D on Aug 13, 2011 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

it's not a question of goofy

it’s a question of have we examined the evidence as it presents itself in the flow of events as they really happened, minus the pre-imprinted predisposition to view the official version with automatic acceptance and makes any alternate explanations able to be dismissed with confidence even though proper, objective analysis has not been undertaken — as it must be in any criminal investigation, empirically and without preconceived bias.

Your Oakland A's in microcosm

Cruz was so slow getting to Weeks’ triple, Weeks might have been able to circle the bases. And of course, he was stranded.

Serious question re: Allen

Do we think he’s up to stay? Will he get regular ABs if that’s the case? What happens with CoJack if Allen stays up? Maybe if we can trade DeJesus, this is less of a problem, but if not, I have a bad feeling CoJack will get most of the ABs.
