C.J. Wilson rips A's fans, mound
http://espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/story/_/id/6851444/texas-rangers-cj-wilson-rips-oakland-fans-mound
"I hate pitching there. The mound sucks, the fans suck. There's no fans there," Wilson said, free-flowing off a question about the ample foul territory at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. "It's too bad because the fans that are there are really adamant and they're really stoked on the team and they play drums and they wave flags and that's cool. But, you know, some games you go there and there's like 6,000 people there.
"It's kind of sad because it's a major league team and there's guys out there that are obviously pretty good players -- guys like (Trevor) Cahill and Gio Gonzalez, obviously they are All-Star pitchers -- and I just wish that the fan base supported them a little bit more."

and then
“It’s too bad because the fans that are there are really adamant and they’re really stoked on the team”
Its like he is contradicting himself. I guess I understand since no one goes to games. He is obviously sounds like a jackass though.
Yes, because there is another team with a nicer place to watch a ballgame within spitting distance of us.
CJ, you don’t have a “I was drunk” excuse to fall back, you are just a moron who doesn’t pay attention to anything.
Well, on this part...

…all I can say is…I heartily agree.

He could've easily kept it to that without going into the whole "the fans suck" thing
And “the mound sucks” comes off as him making excuses, which he often does when he loses.

Yeah, what he really means is,
“The fans are great. The non-fans suck.”

I understand why he says the “fans suck” … cause no one comes out to the game!! But I agree with him … I wish others around there went to the game more. If I didn’t live an hour away, I’d go to a lot more games as well.

He's right
I mean, I like it, I always have a good time, but in the context of modern major league baseball, the whole scene kind of sucks.
Of course, for me, the whole modern major league baseball scene kind of sucks with its luxury boxes and ridiculously priced tickets and its 24-hour media culture and its need to make much, much more of this little game than it really deserves.
The problem is that he's so straight edge, he won't take his prescribed meds to keep his brain chemicals balanced.

Clearly the A's need to get Ian MacKaye to throw out the first pitch and sing the national anthem next time CJ starts at the Coliseum
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
I smoked a bowl on the Coliseum mound.
No, really. It was that Day on The Green with The Who and The Clash. What was that, 1982? Graham’s Blue Meanies were clearing people out after the show, and I was walking right by the mound, and well…“When am I gonna get another chance?”
Interesting to hear ol’ Ian’s loosened up a bit. Minor Threat still sounds awesome after all these years, and never once did I blame them for all those mediocre Straight Edge bands that they inspired. Once you get past them, 7 Seconds and the pre-metal SSD, the genre really goes south.

I'm a fan of the second wave too....
Uniform Choice’s LP is still a real rager, Youth Of Today were so over the top, but their energy made them pretty great as well and Judge were good too but pushed the music in too metal a direction for many. After that it kind of just rehashes itself over and over (and still does).
CM Punk is Straight Edge
CJ Wilson is a douche.

I'll give it up for YOT
I saw them rip it up at an all-ages matinee at Satyricon in Portland, Winter of ‘88. The other band on the bill was Angry Samoans. Bizarre. I remember these punker girls trying to scam on the YOT guys, who were not playing along. "No, you can’t get in the van. It’s a boys-only clubhouse, just like that Brady Bunch episode." Now that I think about it, that UC album was pretty good. Honorable mention to Scared Straight, featuring Scott Radinsky and Brian Walsby, who presumably is still waiting for Kev Seconds to send him a royalty check for all that Walk Together Rock Together merch 7 Seconds has moved over the years…

Ha! So true! Radinsky was awesome...
You Drink You Drive You Die was a really hard hitting record. I love how back in the day I read in Sports Illustrated this article about how he’d get flustered on the mound and Piazza would come up there and sing Angry Samoans songs to him to calm him down.
In the rich, storied history of Major League Baseball,
I’m pretty sure that Radinsky’s the only guy who made the cover of MRR. Likewise, I bet Piazza’s the only guy to appear on That Metal Show. We’ve come a long way from the days of Jim Walewander getting shit from his teammates for being a Dead Milkmen fan! I have Radinsky’s rookie card, which contains this priceless blurb on the back: “Scott has his own Rock band, called ‘Scared Straight’.” Damn right he does! That baby is tucked inside their Mystic 7". Getting Scott to sign both those items is somewhere on my bucket list.

C.J. Wilson the sXe douche
A straight edge is a punk movement from the 1980’s where they abstain from drugs and alcohol. (Sorry to insult people who know what Straight Edge means). Just from personal experience Straight Edge people are super extreme, righteous and intense about their beliefs a.k.a. Totally Boring Assholes. Plus it seemed like Wilson was all over the map with his comments, saying great things and not so great things. About the attendance, Wolff PLEASE get rid of those Upper Deck tarps it will bring a extra chunk of fans.
Removing the tarps won't have any real effect on attendance, sorry
Not unless we’re talking about games against the Giants, maybe a few against the Yankees and Red Sox.
But games where they’ve only sold about 12,000 tickets? Nah.
Last of the Ninth - Photography
These days the don't even sell out ny or Boston
so not even those games would you get a boost anymore.

If your argument is that cheap seats will bring in fans, note that not even the Value Deck ($12 w/ $6 voucher included) is sold out every game.
by LoneStranger on Aug 11, 2011 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah and at some point the "cheap seats" so devalue your product
That it actually makes the situation worse. They’re finding that all across MLB as other teams have discounted their tickets to fill seats suddenly their season ticket rolls are getting smaller as people drop them due to lack of need. Why have season tickets when you can cherry pick good seats to any game?
Dallas won't be happy. It is his mound after all.

The mound, like the rest of the field, suffers a lot during football season
Pitching on a dismantled and rebuilt mound probably is a PITA.

Hadn't even considered that
When was the last time he pitched in Oakland? If it were during football season the mound very well may suck.
CJ Wilson's career stats at the Coliseum
0-2, 4.00 ERA, 1.83 WHIP. He hates the mound in Oakland because he hasn’t won there.

The truth hurts
I have no objection with anything he said. The fans that do come are great of course as he says. But at the same time our fans overall do suck right now. 6,000 a game is pathetic. And we can make all the excuses in the world, doesn’t change the fact that on many weekdays under 10k are showing up (reality not announced attendance).
As for the mound, he’s entitled to his opinion.
If the A's had a better stadium, more people would come watch them.

Also truth
San Jose, Oakland, Fremont doesn’t matter. They’d draw more in a new downtown or faux downtown park anywhere in the Bay Area that ISN’T in an industrial wasteland. Sadly the most likely location and most advanced proposal in San Jose remains in perpetual limbo thanks to Bud.
I still think we're waiting on the VC EIR.
I keep thinking that since we haven’t heard a peep (and we should have seen a draft a month or two ago) there must be something that is complicating matters that may shoot Oakland’s chances down. I think MLB is giving them some time to figure it out. If they can’t figure it out, MLB can say, “look, we really, really tried to keep them there.”
by LoneStranger on Aug 11, 2011 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions
You may be right
The dragging of feet on the Oakland EIR is bad news no matter how you cut it. Particularly since this is the draft not the final.

i wonder how the players on the team feel :3

I agree on some points (although he could have worded it better)
It IS sad to have 6000 fans, no argument there about having a crappy stadium. However, the whole “the mound sucks” statement is blasphemy, as that is dissing Clay Wood and warrants retribution in my mind.
Isn't CJ from Orange County?
Or am I projecting SoCal douche onto him?

Yet another reason to like McCarthy
“He seems to talk about us a lot,” McCarthy said. "I think the easiest way to quiet somebody is to beat him, and beat him well, to the point where there’s just nothing left to say. That needs to be our goal from now through the rest of September.

nothing he said was really provocative
overstock is a depressing stadium and baseball fans have shifted their allegiances for a variety of reasons. people should be angry at the giants organization for preventing the a’s from relocating and building a new stadium in san jose.
It's not about whether or not "what he said was right/wrong"
it should be about why he said it. It’s glaringly obvious to me that something happened when Texas played here – either to him, his wife, perhaps, maybe a family member. He’s pissed off because of it … let’s face it, it’s not as if the A’s have been very relevant for a while, now. Why would he single out the A’s (and it’s clear to me that he has some sort of agenda) “out of the blue”? Oakland’s not in contention – there really isn’t much of a rivalry … nope, Wilson’s taken something personal and he’s attempting to get even (I have no doubt he was the “unnamed AL West pitcher” who criticized the A’s in a recent ESPN Magazine article.
All that is well and good … but here’s my issue … just be man enough to admit it. Just come out and say, “Look, XYZ happened when we played here once, and I’m angry about it.” That way everyone is clear what the issue is, and we can get rid of this whole “these are just random observations about another team” facade.
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.
The Rangers’ attendance figures are nothing to be proud of . . . they just went to the World Series and they aren’t going to his the 3,000,000 mark in attendance despite the fact that their stadium holds over 50,000 fans . . I can only imagine what will happen to attendance figures once the Cowboys’ preseason is in full swing. Haha.
While having 10,000 fans in attendance is absolutely terrible, I know that the A’s have excellent fans (I live in Berkeley) and they will show up once a new venue is built and/or it looks like ownership is at least trying to win in the interim. I just hope MLB can figure out a way to keep the A’s in Northern California, because if they were to leave, it would be a tragedy.

They're on pace for about 2,940,000
So it’s a couple games off at their pace of 36,332 a game.
If we’re scoffing at a team drawing over 35,000 a game…come on.

They went to the WS and they aren't going to hit 3,000,000
and their stadium seats over 50,000 . . . the figures were around 30,000 when the Mavs were making their run and I can only imagine the hit their figures will take when people start focusing on the Cowboys again. In DFW: Cowboys > Mavs > Rangers > Stars.

We know high school football is bigger than most other sports in Texas. 35,000+ is 35,000+.

I am just saying that he’s complaining about attendance in Oakland (a team in a terrible stadium situation that has had a woeful product for quite some time) when his own team could be doing much better . . .
I absolutely abhor everything to do with Texas sports and their awful bandwagon fans (look at Cowboys attendance figures in the late 80s/early 90s), so perhaps I am just finding ways to criticize them. Haha.

This came up on Twitter as well, so I looked some things up
The lowest attendance they’ve averaged in the “new” place (now in its 18th season) was about 24k, and they’ve at least been in the lower half of AL attendance (easier to check quickly on BB-Ref) just three times over that span. On top of that, they’ve averaged 30k or more (60%) 11 of those years. Right now they’re on pace to just barely miss their all-time attendance record, set back in 1997.
I get hating Texas sports, but Wilson’s attendance complaints about the A’s should have been kept to himself. It’s nothing new. Over on Twitter, he didn’t even know the A’s are trying to build a new stadium.
