A's Down Yankees with Pig and Lizard
Say what you will about Rich Harden, he is not intimidated by pinstripes.
A couple of long balls from CompliantPork and Hideki Matsui, together with some station-to-station hitting allowed just enough breathing room for the A's to squeeze 27 outs from a beautiful New York day.
A's offense: Josh Willingham knocked it over the left field wall after Matsui singled in the third, a single/walk/walk/single combo among Swooney/Conor/Powell/Jemile respectively top of the sixth, and a solo shot from Godzilla over the short porch in right in the seventh was the sum total of the A's offensive output.
Even the especially aggressive base running by New Yawk in the ninth could not turn the A's away. Woo.
Positives:
- Both Harden and Grant Balfour worked out of bases-loaded situations to preserve the win.
- Willingham continues to show good power, hopefully making his imminent departure more valuable. A high profile home run like this can do nothing but help his value.
- Jemile Weeks continued his timely hitting--two hits with an RBI in aforementioned station-to-station situation (though his base running continues to be as point of contention).
- Landon Powell threw out another runner and continues to look good in the backup role.

Seems to have very good velocity this year
as compared to the last few.
Same here.
I mean, he’s still only 30. So if he somehow magically discovers how to stay healthy, he might be an asset.
This good performance probably makes Harden good trade bait too.
Then bring up Moscoso etc…
Carlos Gonzalez would look nice in one of the corner outfield spots right now

It was great indeed!
although It was really long and taxing on the mind for me…
Every man for himself...
Weeks and Willingham
both in the lineup make all the difference. I think we can make it back to .500 Our offense has given me a new found hope.
you wonder
what if we beat Colon tomorrow, Gio goes out and doms them and we scratch another one out in NY? What does Beane do? He has got to be thinking that the dudes who performed so below their career shit the first half — DDJ, Gojira esp. — might just blow up as they progress to their respective means in half #2 here. A win tomorrow and he might just maybe think twice about the yearly fire sale. Or am I off my nut yet again and it doesn’t matter what we do up to the 31st, he’s still gonna unload them all?

that's what I was thinking
I had convinced myself we are selling it all but he has to be looking at how balls-deep awful a lot of these guys did the first half and be wondering if they will be as good as they were bad here in the second half… not that we’re not 452 games behind the Rangers, but there has to be some hesitation on his part given the solid and often inspiring caliber of play we’ve seen from our lads since the break.

I was thinking the same thing
If other clubs don’t come to you with a good enough offer for guys like Willingham and Coco, and to a lesser degree DeJesus and Matsui, might as well roll the dice with these guys and see how the season plays out. Maybe the A’s go on a crazy winning streak and get back in this thing….we’ve seen it happen before, right? A shot in the dark, mind you, but still a shot.
Worse case scenario, the A’s let those guys walk after offering arb in the off season, collect draft picks, or maybe even re-sign Coco or Willingham….what the hell, right?
Also, I’m totally in favor of keeping both Grant Balfour and Andrew Bailey. Those two make a deadly one-two punch in the pen to close games. It’s not easy to shut down the Yanks in close games and they did that today.
Lastly, Rich Harden is back, bitches!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s my boy, and dare we dream for a return to form from Tricky Dick? Man, his last two starts he’s really looked freak nasty at times, and his velocity is back up to 95 mph a good portion of the time. Fucking A Mister! Go A’s!

Wow, You guys are the most optimistic fans I have seen in a while.
And I like it…
But this team needs to play better baseball all around. I too would like to see the A’s play some Solid D + Solid Pitching + Solid Hitting… and do that for One month straight. Call me crazy, but I like watching my team play good, solid fundamental baseball.

When I first read this,
I thought you were saying that a “Solid D+” would be an improvement. And sadly, I was nodding my head going “Uh-huh…”

I honestly think it's only going to be a minor deal if anything by the 31st
Getting something back that’s actually useful for our players just seems like a longshot.

Unload No Matter What?
Yes, probably. If you can imagine yourself in the position of the majority owners, it’s not hard to guess that they may want to move a few players who currently have decent value in the marketplace—especially guys who have bounced back from injuries—and move them now or soon, swapping them for cash plus low-cost prospects before they end up in the sick bay again.
Well, not "no matter what"
The return would need to be worthwhile

I don't think so either
Willingham needs to stay. Some people think that he may break in a few years, but I think that he has a few solid years ahead of him yet. Also, he has, albeit a long time ago now, expressed an interest in signing an extension with the A’s. Holy Shit! No decent hitter ever wants to sign with us. We should take advantage of it and sign him to a reasonable three year contract. Chris Carter doesn’t even seem ready yet, and I am no longer counting on him. Carter has to show some improvement before I start believing.

two ways to look at it
one is, we’re 13.5 games out and not very good. the other is that some of these guys might be worth signing long term.
I want to see BB reload, so I do think you trade a lot of guys. But willingham and coco might be worth hanging on to.
I'll see your .500 and raise you a game!

Rich Harden really dug deep and took it to the Yanks...
Sure as shit, now he’s on the Red Sox’s radar and they hope Beane will give him and Willingham away for Peanuts! I sure hope not though!
They can have Fuentes though!!!

I also want to give props to Melvin for leaving Balfour in there for the 8th.

Thanks
Walkoff homers are still pretty rare on a day-to-day basis, at least in terms of happening to be at one. I think in all the minor league games I’ve covered, this is my third or fourth, and the first time I can remember where it was a righty up with me on the first base side (where I’ve been for the three I’m certain of).
I’ve been to two I know of in the Coliseum.
It coming with the breast cancer awareness uniforms made it pretty cool, too. In fact, the three times I can think of in the minors all came when special uniforms were worn (09: California/Carolina League ASG, 10: Ports July 4, 11: last night).

Yeah, that's why I put them all up there like that
I haven’t decided how many of them will go into the game gallery.
Last of the Ninth - Photography
And yeah, I moved to the 1B side in hope someone might homer
Cardenas – a lefty of course – led off and hit one to the fence that was caught, otherwise he’d have ended it by hitting for the cycle.
Then came Kouzmanoff, the first righty in the inning. Boom, shot to center, game over.
Also got this sequence of a play at the plate:

Mark Unicorn Ellis was terribly close to dropping below .300
Batting .301 before today.
He battled back to .325. In 82 PAs.
Miss you Mark.
Is there anywhere that has splits for current team only?
I’m curious what Ellis’ home/away splits are so far.
