Open Thread: Game 84 -- Arizona Diamondbacks at Oakland Athletics

Arizona Diamondbacks at Oakland Athletics, Jul 2, 2011 6:05 PM PDT

We could be facing this guy... but instead...

I cannot believe it, but the A's won a game. And Rich Harden pitched! That is unbelievable! I mean, think about that for a second. Two, extremely rare events occurring simultaneously! A's winning a game AND Rich Harden being alive!

Onward!

The A's take on the snakes again for the second straight day (in Soviet Russia, the day is curved), with Josh Outman and Joe Saunders facing off. What is interesting is that this might be one of the last few starts for Outman, who would presumably be ousted from the rotation once McCarthy and Ross are back.

Saunders, as everyone is familiar with, is a former Slegna and the "Prize" from the theft that was Dan Haren from the DBacks. After giving up so much to get Haren in the first place, signing him to another team friendly deal on top of his other team friendly deal, and getting several great years out of him, I am still shocked that the Dbacks, based only on a spotty ERA, (but not peripherals), dumped him for nothing... to the hated Slegna... sigh... Oh how I wish we could have traded for him instead....

Game starts at 6 Pacific!

Outman having better upside than Ross?

LOL.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Outman’s potential a lot… hell, I have since watching him pitch in 2009, but Ross easily has a lot more upside.

Its not that much though

Its not a laughable amount and certainly an arguable one. They are both have the potential to be pretty good.

Seriously?

Ross is a shoulder injury waiting to happen. Pitch him, hope he throws well and sell high with him. What they should have done with Anderson

by dashman33 on Jul 2, 2011 6:05 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I'll agree with you on McCarthy.

However, Ross has plenty more upside that Outman. The only context in which Outman possibly outclasses Ross is in their mechanics, which has been the primary concern with Ross for years. There’s a reason we grabbed him in the first round.

I think the starters are more uni-superstitious this year. If they win a game while wearing a certain color jersey, they automatically go back to it the next day.

It does.

What I really would like to see would be for the A’s to ditch the gray road pants, and change the fabric on the road jersey to a dark gray, so it would look like an alt jersey.

White pants at home and creamish gold pants on the road.

That's illegal, isn't it?

Only gray pants on the road, I think.

by danmerqury on Jul 2, 2011 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions

They should get an exemption.

They used to wear bright white pants on the road until 1986.

A darker yellowish cream would compliment all the road jerseys, and have the effect that the old white road pants had, but not be bright and sparkly white.

The Padres’ goldish road uniforms of a few years ago would be enough of a precedent to get a different color pants approved, as long as it was subtle, like a creamy gold would.

However, you can have constant interleague play.

Also, even without interleague play, it’s possible to make a schedule in which no team ever has more than 2 off days in a row, and no team plays more than 5 scheduled doubleheaders, even with an odd team.

that's a good question. He sure makes a fine, easily visible target with body-blocking abilities.

I’d hate to see him in goal in the NHL. He’d stop up 3/4 of the net and STILL give up 3 goals a game through the undefended slit.

Rot in hell

for mentioning that man. His name, like the name of the manager of the D’Backs, is verboten north of Modesto.

But in actuality, the real crime in that series was Game 6, which was horrendously called. If the game is called fairly, Kings win the series and sweep the Nets in the Finals.

Peja missed some crucial FTs

To seal the deal in Game 7.

Mike Bibby did hit a clutch shot in Game 5 with seconds to go.

But the referee scandal and point fixing did shatter a lot of confidence I had at the NBA being a clean competitive sport ( when compared to the other ones)
