Open Thread: Game 92 - A's at Texas
Finally, the A's are about to get better as they won't be allowed to play for the next four days after today. But they have to bring their unique brand of fail to the ballpark one more time, hoping to avoid a four-game series sweep in a series they had to sweep.
Trevor Cahill, who might have the rare opportunity to start in back to back games (he could open the Angels series on Friday), gets the call against LHP Matt Harrison. With any luck, Jemile Weeks won't muff a grounder, bobble a base hit, give up on a foul pop-up, and lob a poor throw to 1B, in today's game. Speaking of 1B, welcome to the position Adam Rosales after Weeks not only killed the A's chances of winning with yesterday's 9th inning throw, he also killed Conor Jackson.
Today's lineup comes courtesy of the ever-reliable Baseball Press:

Cool facts: The #USWNT is 10-for-10 on penalties on July 10 #2011 #1999. Solo saved 3rd PK today; Scurry saved 3rd PK in 1999.

I mean really, who cares about tweets from people prospects.
Jesus, the A’s are like the raiders, people are starting to become more concerned with the antics off the field

and yet, no body cares about it anymore. It had no effect on the game or the braves when push comes to shove

Obviously it had enough of an effect that something was done about it at the time, just as it’s being done right now with Krol.
It will blow over, but that doesn’t mean it’s acceptable language.

exactly, it blows over and the world still turns.
Quite frankly as long as the guy can keep himself from being John Rocker, I could really careless. And thats if he winds up ever amounting to anything.

Yes, that's what it is about.

Trying to reason with homophobic people = exercise in futility
The A’s did the right thing, good for them. If you use hate words publicly your employer should, and might, discipline you. It’s pretty simple.

You’re damn right I’m not going to accept a different view point. There’s no fundamental difference between this and John Rocker. Just the degree of severity.
No you are a militant because you cant accept people don't agree with your views
Thats your issue. See you are swearing now too. You are just losing it. Trying to accuse people of phobias. Give it a rest already. Accept people have different views from your own and move on.
Hello? You play to win the game!
How about accepting using hateful
language toward a group of people also isn’t cool. You would have loved the 50s I suggest you move back there.
Heres the reality, I accept that people are going to use hateful language
Theres nothing I can do about it. That’s how the world works. Some people use effectionate language, some use hateful. But getting bent out of shape every time some one says something hateful is pointless.
You’ll wind up bent out of shape your whole life if you do that
Hello? You play to win the game!

But if we don't take a stand and let people know it's not cool
then it never changes. I think we know people are gonna use the language. We just don’t like it and wish to affect a change. If we keep silent – we contribute to what we see as a problem.

I’m not sure what you mean by making a stand. But I’m not going to risk my health or lively hood over a slur.
At the end of the day its the wrong battle and a pointless one.
Hello? You play to win the game!
OK....I guess what I mean is if we don't tell people it's not cool
then those that exhibit that behavior don’t ever “get” that it’s unacceptable. I think that the team – by imposing a suspension – is sending that message. It’s the right one and that’s why I think it is important. I would think the same about ethnic slurs – as well. We all fight and choose our own battles. I think if we never even try to fight the battle – we will never see ANY change.

I hear you berry, but for me I don't think this will change anything
Maybe for the individual. But there will be others sluring to take his place. Some of them in baseball.
It happens.
As for change, well I am a pessimist with little faith in the human condition. I suspect this stuff will be an issue long after I am dead just like it was before I was alive.
Hence why I see this all as truely pointless struggle.

Dan, if you're still here
where do you get that it takes 1000 PA"s to determine the platoon split? I’ve heard this before, but I’m not sure why it takes that many AB’s.
im assuming you're saying this because 70 seems like nice, large number
but in reality, it’s about two weeks worth of games. two weeks is not really indicative of any player’s true talent level.
Hence
move him down from the two hole until he regains his swing against lefties. A guy that is 8 for his last 70 against lefties shouldn’t be betting #2 against a lefty.
That is it

Cold streaks have no predictive power.
Neither do hot streaks. There’s no “until he proves us otherwise”.
Huh.
Tango found a tiny, tiny difference in wOBA after a cold streak, that was equal (but opposite) to the difference after a hot streak.
yes i think it's due to the different samples they used.
i do agree with this author’s logic that a cold streak is more likely to continue due to it being a possible indicator of injury or a serious mechanical flaw.
And there you have it

Agreed on the hitters count
Sizemore had a 2-0 and 3-1 count and swung at pitchers pitches both times.
Don’t want to rag on him because he’s been one of the few players hitting on a consistent
basis. Carter on the other hand, needs to get his act together. He just seems confused
up there, and his swing and timing are way off.
What is the hitting coach doing for this team?
Let them bitch. Especially with less than two strikes and a runner on first. A walk moves
them up to scoring position.
Over/Under

Our schedule seems pretty okay, other than a few games with the Yankees, jays, orioles, and sox, I think it's pretty much just division games, which we haven't been awful in. Weren't we above .500 in division games before this series?

Perry brainwashes A's hitters to let the first pitch go.... we need someone like Scott Hatteberg who would do that, but would swing if it's a nice clean ball in the zone. I miss early 200's......
Didn't Hatteberg suck?

At times, yes. At times, no.
But if nothing else, even when he was struggling at the plate he could get on base with walks. He never looked TOTALLY pathetic like these guys.
And he actually had several extended hot streaks in Oakland. There were a few months in his Oakland career where he was pretty much carrying the team (which is how I lost a personal bet with myself and bought a Hatty shirt).
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."
I don't remember him ever carrying the team, but in any case I don't want him back in any capacity

August... '03? '04? Something where everyone was terrible for three weeks except for him and there was much hair pulling and gnashing of teeth.
And he IS back in a capacity, he’s front office right now, and he’d be an awesome manager. So there.
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."
he carried us in interleague play that one year

This is true, but it should be added that
an important secondary reason was that Polk and the expansionists were concerned about Britain or France annexing California. (This was before gold was discovered.) Without that, I’m not sure the Democrats would have gotten sufficient support for the war.
