Open Thread: 2011 June Player Draft
Its that time of the year again. Time for the A's to attempt to renew their stores of talent in the Minor Leagues. The A's have the 18th overall pick today, but do not draft again until the 105th slot. If you want to follow the draft online, you can do so here. The draft order can be found here as well.
Lets Get to Speculating!

I speculate consternation around here
following our pick.
RIVER CATS: AAA CHAMPS!
I like Springer
Let’s just hope he is still available at #18.
It's sounding more and more likely
Some of the late buzz has teams like the Cubs and Padres, who were supposedly also looking at Springer, linked to other players.
Although with Speck ineligible, the Cubs may nab Springer.
We’ll see. I’m still rooting for Stephenson.
Cole goes #1

If Pineda is for real and Hultzen pans out, my god...
the Mariners are gonna be a really good team, really soon. Dustin Ackley isn’t that far from the show and Nick Franklin will be there in due time.

Doesn't have to be a fast track for me, just high, high, high upside...
I think we should do a complete rebuild though and trade Cahill and Gio if we can get a GREAT return, so I may have a different mindset on what I want the A’s to do :)

but, the way things are going, it might happen sooner than later. I basically want high upside as well, specifically a real, legit masher with 4-5 skills. Sound good?

"Whether they find life there or not, I think Jupiter should be called an enemy planet." - Jack Handey
I think it's mostly for production reasons
The MLB wants their draft to be a big deal like the NFL draft so they need time between picks to let the talking heads “analyze” the picks and interview the players.
I always liked listening to the draft on the internet, pre-5 minute rule
They would barrel through the first round in about 10 minutes. It was like a Texas cattle auction. Fun.
Yep.
Just a bunch of scouting directors on a call. You could occasionally hear them get excited when a name fell to them that they didn’t expect. When the Angels ’ guy tabbed Chris Bootcheck a number of years ago, I think that was the most elated I’ve ever heard a human being sound.
Are you sure those weren't A's fans?
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
That exact pick was from the A's, for Mike Magnante
The Legendary Mike Magnante, that is. Our first pick (in the second round) was the Immortal Freddie Bynum. Not their finest moment.
So they set Magnante on us and we set Bootcheck on them.
Probably a draw.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Works great for me at work.
I only pop over to check every 10 minutes or so anyway.

Too many things need to go right.

From scout
The sh*t bouncing around about Garcia Speck is just incredible. Goldstein’s chat has the text of a letter from MLB on his draft eligibility. Here it is with my own timeline:
1. Conor Glassey of BA breaks story on Onelcki Garcia Speck is available for the draft and a potential late first round pick.
2.Frankie Piliere breaks news that Cubs are on Garcia Speck at #9.
3. Garcia Speck’s agent, Gus Dominguez, sends letter out to MLB teams stating his client is NOT eligible for the 2011 draft.
4. MLB sends response letter saying he IS eligible.
“We understand that Gus Dominguez has contacted Clubs for the purpose of asserting that Onelki Garcia is not eligible for the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, which begins this evening. Consistent with the attached, which Joel Araujo sent to your attention on Saturday, June 4, please be advised that the Office of the Commissioner has determined that Garcia has established residency in the United States and is therefore subject to the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.
Based on the information we have received regarding Garcia’s residency status, it is our understanding that Garcia established residency and began working out in the United States in February 2011. We have repeatedly requested that Gus Dominguez provide us with documentary evidence supporting his claim that Garcia is a legal resident of a country other than the United States, but no such information has been provided to us. The Office of the Commissioner is, of course, unable to declare a player ineligible for the Rule 4 Draft based solely on the bare assertions of his representative that he is not a resident of the United States within the meaning of Major League Rule 4. As a result, the Office of the Commissioner has determined that Garcia is subject to the First-Year Player Draft.
Please let me know if you have any questions."

it’s hard to meh though when the draft is our lifeline and we’ve been mehing for the last few years.
He's still young and he has a ton of power. Plus he's playing CF (I think). There's no need to panic just yet.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Yeah a years worth is definitely not enough time to decide wether he’s going to be a good player or not. Time will tell, it just becomes so difficult to be patient when your offense is what ours has been the last few years.
I miss the excitement of young offensive prospects. We were spoiled for so long with that.

And he probably can’t stay in center.

seems sorta averageish offensively to me, and the fact that he might have to move out of CF makes me want to stay away.

He will stick in the OF and is a quality bat. Not great, but a solid regular. BTW, would love to get a quality bat, but when you’re picking 18, that’s not easy.
How many "not great, but solid" regulars do we have again?
How many of our prospects are projected to be that?

I've seen the A's linked with CJ Cron a few times. He'll probably still be on the board.
He’s all offense, but he’s got a lot of offense to give.
Yay a DH with the first round pick!
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Watching him run, he might not be athletic enough for even DH

That may not be accurate. But neither is Cron’s.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Point is, they're both big boys.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Probably. Maybe a serviceable 1B with some coaching.
He hit .434/.517/.803 though (15 HR, 26 doubles) with the new bats, so he’s not exactly chopped liver. Definitely prefer him to Michael or Mahtook.
No point taking a 1B/DH in the first round unless their bat is as good as a Hosmer's.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
He's leading the NCAA in SLG. From his page on the Utah baseball website:
[Cron] ranked second nationally in doubles per game (0.53), third in batting average (.434), sixth in doubles (26), sixth in total bases (159), ninth in on-base percentage (.517) and 11th in home runs per game (0.31).
That's nice.
But no scout or analyst seems to think he has a Hosmer or even LaPorta level bat.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Yep, unless we try and sign Josh Bell.
At this point I wouldn’t even mind if we drafted him and don’t sign him, then get an extra pick in the draft next year. I’m sooo sick of the mediocrity surrounding everything this season. Let us at least get a a 1st round pick with some high upside.

Bell would’ve been ideal but we’re fans and we want BPA no matter what without knowing the details behind the scenes. It could’ve been that Bell wanted 5-6 million. by buckfan6 on Jun 6, 2011 5:50 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Be wary of velocity reports from just drafted players.
They’re often inflated. Or pitchers, specifically college ones, lose velocity as they transition to a pro workload. I heard Hudson used to hit 96 in college.
It’s likely that when we see Gray actually pitching for us, he’ll be throwing low 90s.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
I thought high school pitchers were more prone to that.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Perhaps.
Some high schoolers gain velocity though, as they get bigger and their bodies finish developing.
College pitchers, especially the top ones, are hurt by the college workload. By the time they get to the majors, even before they get drafted, there’s already a lot of mileage on the arm.
"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
Yeah I thought high schoolers had a week between starts, which allowed them to pitch harder.
When they get into the grind of a pro season they lose velocity.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
From scout's report
Height is the only thing keeping Gray from being a lock for the top 6-7 picks in this draft class. You do have to worry about his size and whether he’ll be durable as a pro. But, he has the three pitch mix including two plus pitches and above average command to be front end starter.

I wished we had gotten an elite bat, but then again, with how we develop offensive prospects, perhaps its better to draft a pitcher, and then trade for offense?

yeah, my point is
we got a top twelve talent at 18, this is great, there is reason to pop moderately priced champagne.
Great scouting report on Gray
Some excerpts:
Fastball – Gray has big velocity, regularly sitting 94-96 mph and touching as high as 97/98 mph when he reaches back for it. There is good armside life on the pitch and when on he can fill-up the strikezone from black-to-black.
Curve – Gray’s curve is perhaps the best in the class, with hard downer action on the power bender. He is low- to mid-80s with the pitch and gets consistent shape and bite.
Change-up – Gray doesn’t use his change-up much, but it flashes above average as a straight offering with some late dive.
Slider – Gray has fooled around with a mid-80s slider, but it is still inconsistent and not often utilized.
Gray has one of the top three two-pitch combos in the class, and has an argument for the top fastball/breaking ball pairing. His size may drop him on some boards, but if he makes it out of the top five overall he’ll provide incredible value to a lucky team. Probability is high, considering his fallback is as a potentially elite closer with two plus-plus pitches and long track record of big stuff and good production.
Hope I didn’t quote too much, it’s a very good, very extensive report

Why a pity?
What’s with all the Tampa Bay love around here anyway? Seems like every stat-minded A’s fan who is disappointed with the A’s front office is now enamored of the Rays. WTF. That’s like a dingers-minded A’s fan who is disappointed with the A’s hitting becoming a Yankees fan.
Sweet is the lore which Nature brings; / Our meddling intellect
Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:— / We murder to dissect.
A's fans tend to like smart front offices
Everybody likes the David who outsmarted Goliath. Plus they are in direct competition with the Yanks and Sox, the antitheses of the A’s. It makes perfect sense to root for the Rays.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
I call bullshit.
You say you like smart front offices. Maybe you became an A’s fan because our front office was smart. But now some other front office is smarter, so you ditch the A’s and cozy up to them instead?
That’s exactly the same kind of bandwagoneering that other fans do when they pile on for the team that wins the most games. It’s not the opposite of the Yankees, it’s exactly analogous, except that you do it for brains instead of for money.
Sweet is the lore which Nature brings; / Our meddling intellect
Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:— / We murder to dissect.
Rooting for the Rays will never be the same as rooting for the A's,
But they are an organization I respect and a team that proves the A’s can compete if they’re smart enough. It’s like rooting for a friend to do well when you lose early.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton
Screw you.
Its nothing like that. It has nothing to do with the team that is popular or wins. Its completely different. Its about respecting smart baseball people and hoping they do well. Its why I root for the Twins and the Rays secondarily to the A’s and have a lot of respect for Daniels in TX. Its about hating the power structure of the MLB that puts people with money ahead of people that don’t have it. Its about rewarding people that scout and do stats research well, over those with a silver spoon in their hand.
If I was going to do what you just did, I would say that you hate the American dream if you call us bandwagoning fans, but Im not going to do that.

I think both sentiments are off base
First, I do enjoy the Rays and the Twins because EF the Spankees and Red Sux. For a team to have a low payroll and go to the playoffs is great! I’m not sure where, at all, vignette disavowed himself from his Oakland fandom. A little offensive to accuse him of such.
But, we also have to know that the A’s, Twins, and Rays are nothing alike! The A’s built its team off of market inefficiencies, while the Rays built their team using multiple number one picks and very toolsy players. Twins, along the same vein, draft toolsy players and have a remarkable pedigree for developing pitchers. Might be the only similarity between the A’s and Twins.
A pity because I like it when people do well and not when opportunities are lost
I’m a baseball fan more than I am an A’s fan. I have no problem with the Rays or Yankees or whomever.
Also I’m not “stat-minded”.
