Brett Anderson's Left Elbow Seeks Medical Review

As many on AN have speculated, given Brett Anderson's visible loss in velocity and struggles to get opposing hitters out over the last several starts, the pitcher's left elbow is going to be examined by doctors (just our team's or external, not quite clear yet) and he has already left the team, headed back to the Bay Area. If he does land on the DL, this will see him joining hurlers Dallas Braden, Brandon McCarthy and Tyson Ross just in the last two months (and we're not even counting Rich Harden) - another blow to the A's otherwise excellent staff.

Anderson's last outing, which lasted only five innings, and saw him give up five runs to the Red Sox, brought his season ERA to a not-so-shiny 4.00, and dropped his record to 3-6.

Source for today's bad news comes courtesy of the Contra Costa Times.

UPDATE: Susan Slusser reports that Rosales has been called up and is in tonight's lineup. De Los Santos and Kevin Kousmannoff have been "optioned out". Scott Sizemore has also been called up. (via Twitter)

I've been sayin we should trade

some of our bullpen depth for more rotation depth. I’m surprised our all-seeing, all-knowing management didn’t do it. Now it’s likely to cost more, now that teams deem it a real need for us (if BA is indeed hurt).
Good news is, if Lenny DiNardo gets a start this year, I can officially start looking forward to football.

It's not just his last few starts, it's the whole season that his velocity has been off.

Fangraphs shows his average FB velocity as 92.6 in 2009 and 92.1 in 2010 and now 90.9 in 2011. But I think quite possibly more importantly, his average slider velocity has gone from 83.6 last year to 80.6 this year. That’s huge, 3 mph is a massive drop.

Digging a little deeper, you can see that he’s gone from 48.1% 4-seamers in 2009 to 25.8% last year, and finally to just 19% this year. His 2-seam use is up to 26.5% from just 6.4% in his rookie year.

Also very telling is that by looking at his velocity graphs, it looks like he lost a little bit on his fastball as soon as he came back from injury last year, and then a little bit more gradually since then. But the drop in velocity on his slider seems to mostly have occurred suddenly in between this year and last year.

I’ll be interested to find out what they discover.

Before the season I said I expected both Braden and Anderson to miss significant parts of the year and the fifth starter spot to be some combination of bad/injured.

I’m relatively certain it was talked about on NUMEROUS occasions: The health of our pitching staff is very frail. Didn’t you even write an entire thread about the subject, and I’m pretty sure I and a whole boat load of others agreed with you. You always make sure everyone knows you do.

In any case, you’ve been wrong to date, but you may end up being right if Anderson is really hurt. The fifth starter spot has been fantastic, but you sure did get lucky on both of them getting hurt. Maybe if you’re really lucky, Outman and Moscoso will get hurt, too, and you can crow about how smart you are at the expense of the A’s doing well some more.

If Anderson needs TJ (and with all the other problems with our team)...

I’d say we should shop anyone and everyone on our major league roster. That means Cahill and Gio are on the trading block for the highest bidder. We need a full rebuild and those 2 are the closest to fetching quality prospects (Suzuki might be able to nab something decent).

Highest bidder, no

I’d listen to offers, but no deal unless you’re getting back a package at least on the level of Haren to AZ. Too many years of team control to just auction them off.

by Glorious Mundy on Jun 6, 2011 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, for sure.

“Highest bidder” was the wrong phrase to use.

The good thing is that we don’t need to trade them, so the A’s wouldn’t lose any leverage in trade negotiations just cus Anderson is out for what could be an extended period. They’re cost controlled (Gio to an extent) so it’s not like we need to dump their contracts or anything out of financial necessity.

It’s more of a thing of “Hey, we’re out of contention and probably not contending any time soon. Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzales are great young, cost-controlled pitchers. You want one of ‘em? It’s gonna cost you, but we’re extremely serious about them being available and are willing to talk. Make us an initial offer and we’ll go from there”.

Cahill could still fetch a very nice haul. If we let him get blown up by anymore teams with good offenses, though, that may not be the case. I guess I’d prefer if we kept Gonzalez. He seems to have the best combination of pure stuff, health, and long term signability at this point.

how long would it take to stretch him out

does he even have a workable 3rd pitch in his repertoire at this point? I mean, it’s more than just stamina we’re talking about – I think he’d be a ways away as a starter. Part of the reason for moving him to the pen, besides the injury, was that he could progress faster, right?

by oakballnack on Jun 6, 2011 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think his controll would really make it worth it

plus, he probably wouldn’t be able to sustain the explosive velocity as a starter, and from all reports, his change up was never anything but mediocre. I’d keep him in the bullpen – I’d worry about getting into his head trying to change him from role to role too much – alla Joba Chamberlain

Some notes about PitchFX.

First off, it’s calling some slower fastballs as changeups, so the actual velocity of his fastball is a bit lower than indicated. It didn’t do that in 2010:

2010
2011

The y-axis is velocity, so look at the yellow dots that are folded into the green/blue blobs. Those graphs also give a sense of how far down his velocity is.

Secondly, it’s calling some of the more downwards-breaking sliders as curveballs, so we need to take a weighted average of the two to find his breaking pitch’s true velocity. Unfortunately, the results aren’t very encouraging.

2009: 82.6
2010: 82.3
2011: 79.6

by danmerqury on Jun 6, 2011 11:53 AM PDT reply actions

And while I'm here, might as well look at its movement.

Lateral
2009: -1.6
2010: -1.3
2011: -2.8

Vertical
2009: -5.3
2010: -5.8
2011: -7.0

Some of that increase in movement is because of the velocity (more time to break at same rpm = more break), but it could also explain his control issues. It’s breaking further down and to the right than he’s used to, and that could be causing him to miss bats.

I am speechless at this point about the A’s medical staffs. Why can’t they be more proactive espeically on one of our prized pitchers. Is it too much to ask to have a season where no one is on the DL for a extended period?

by sfniners4life on Jun 6, 2011 1:00 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

The recovery is 12 months right?

We get him surgery now, he’s ready by the all-star break next season, the perfect midway pick me up. Then we have healthy Braden and McCarthy (maybe, why not throw it out there,) Cahill Gonzalez, plus hopefully Weeks, Taylor and Carter (if they’re hitting) up in the big leagues. Maybe we even will have sorted out third base in the offseason by dealing Bailey or something.

And best of all we’re rid of Geren. I think calling this a lost season and getting Anderson the surgery ASAP if he needs it bodes well for next year.

I looked at that yesterday in the rant-thread discussion.

It did look like he had one left. He was moved up quickly. In 2004 he was in the low minors so wouldn’t be on the 40-man. In 2005 he was in the upper minors and so probably that was an option year. 2006 was split between AAA and the bigs, so definitely an option year. After that he stayed in the majors and looks like he never went down.

So probably two option years which leaves one remaining.

The A's need to start Scott Sizemore at third base every day.

Let’s see what he has. I’d rather have him play third base instead of Conor Jackson and Adam Rosales because Sizemore is a legitimate long-term option there.

In 807 career Triple-A PA, Sizemore has hit .313/.396/.485 so let’s just give him a chance to see what happens. It couldn’t hurt, right?

How are the A's to know he is hurt, if he doesn't say he is? For all we know, they asked Brett if he was

If you DLed every pitcher whose velocity was down over the course of 10 starts, you’d have a lot of unnecessary DLs. Dead arms and such. Doesn’t mean they’re hurt. And it doesn’t even mean they’re ineffective.

by danmerqury on Jun 6, 2011 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Not me about Cahill

Nope.

I mentioned yesterday it could also be a dead arm.

He has a history of arm trouble and it’s not surprising. Precautionary evaluation certainly would not have hurt in this case.

If the pitcher in question would admit there is a degree of discomfort then that would allow them to check it earlier but it seems that not many players want to reveal their problems until it’s too late. This is where you need staff to be more observational. Ours apparently have a problem in that area if the last three or four years are anything to go by.

Do the A's ever learn????
The Athletics have confirmed that Jason Bergmann signed a minor league deal with the club on June 1st. The right-hander has been placed on the Double-A Midland roster. The 29-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox in December but was cut loose in March due to a shoulder injury.

Learn what?

The A’s are about to be on their 9th starter, when Anderson hits the DL. Bergmann is literally nothing more than minor league roster filler.

Not if he stays healthy.

What’s the risk? If he gets injured again, oh no, our AA affiliate is out another pitcher! The guy has potential and won’t be taking up a 40 man spot. I don’t see anything wrong with this.

This is exactly what they do.

Sign a 29-year-old AAAA superstar to rack up yet another PCL title.

Nothing.

The problem is having an AAA team composed entirely of AAA filler.

"The past is obviously behind us" -- B. Geren

He is really minimizing Anderson’s condition….“he just flew back to check in with our doctors….we might need someone else to start on Friday if Brett’s not ready to go…”

I would rather our manager not engage in rampant injury speculation in the press.

I’d rather have the same boring Bobo in this case…but not in most cases.

New draft thread.

It’s a front page post, but it’s already beneath the game thread.

Oops, I meant to post that on the old draft thread.

Nevermind.

I just finished re-watching Twin Peaks and an eerily approproate quote comes to mind..."It is happening again."

I want to cry. I don’t know what we are going to do now. Just 2 weeks ago I was hoping for a quick re-load…

I’m starting to think about next year’s rotation being…

Cahill, Gio, Braden, Ross, McCarthy, (Outman) – and if by the season’s end this still looks viable, Anderson could become the kind of trade bait that could land us just about anyone. (Zimmerman please?) Also it would eliminate the risk of Harden 2.0, getting rid of our highest injury risk. If not Zimmerman, imagine who we could go after dangling a cost-controlled BA.

This was the only way I could see us retaining a playoff-caliber rotation, but still adding some key prospects to our system. WASH just drafted Rendon, maybe we can get him, I don’t know. Someone with some knowledge of trade value please put up some trade scenarios. Maybe we should trade Cahill and Gio and hope for the #1 pick next year. This sucks.
