Open Thread: Game 59 (Oakland Athletics at Boston Red Sox)
Oakland Athletics at Boston Red Sox, Jun 4, 2011 10:10 AM PDT
The A's find themselves fighting a 4 game losing streak against the Yankees (of the New York and Boston variety). Today's morning game features Cahill vs Beckett in a match for the ERA title (at least before Cahill's recent struggles).
The A's really need to get a grip, as the team's recent strength (pitching) has faltered recently, and the bullpen is struggling and tired from yesterday's game. All I can say is, if the offense remembers what they did yesterday and gives Cahill 6 runs, and Cahill remembers what life was like Pre-Yanks, we should be fine.
On a side note: Are we sure that Josh Beckett isn't an Athletic already? Good pitching numbers with a thousand injuries? Sounds all too familiar.
baseballgirl: Here are your lineups (thanks, BaseballPress). Ellis is batting fifth. No sign of Suzuki or Crisp. Good morning; Happy Weekend!
LET'S GO OAK-LAND!

Idiot managing #104
Geren is placing Powell as the #7 hitter. Once again Geren is managing the team like a lazy idiot. In Geren’s mind erase Suzuki’s name and replace it with Powell. Line up is good. No idiot another mistake. Put your worse hitter Powell who can’t run and a easy DP to 9th in the order so he gets less ABs. You will also notice if Powell comes up with the bases loaded late in the game instaed of using a PH he will let Powell bat because he promised to give Suzuki a day off.
Where are the lineups?

I apologize to everyone whom I contributed excess optimism this spring.
I made the grave miscalculation that the players and management would give maximum effort in an obvious contending year, and that enlightened self-interest would keep the players running out grounders, hustling in the field, and well, trying. I also thought that the awesomeness of the pitching would outweigh the suckiness of the offense, and apparently that’s just not the case.
Hopefully, the next couple weeks of getting destroyed and falling out of the pennant race won’t be too painful to those of you who were on board earlier in the season. I know I’m not doing too well, so hopefully those of you out there who are more levelheaded and sane do a better job of it than I am.
I like winning. When the team I root for isn’t in a position to win, I like intelligent management and rebuilding. I like honorable underdog stories and rooting for my childhood heroes to do well in management/ownership. The A’s are 0 for 4 these days on those fronts. There are a lot of other teams that are 2 for 4 or 3 for 4 on that front, and every day I have to ask myself if I want to watch another day of the assclowns in charge running Mr. Mack’s franchise into the ground.

The only good thing about this season
Is Beane understanding what a idiot Geren is and getting rid of him. Beane can make no excuses this year on why the A’s can’t win. All of the experts said the A’s will contend and if they don’t look at the manager. Beane’s own leadership is at a all time low because of Geren and now he must make the easy decision of getting rid of Geren.
We lost two starting pitchers.....
It’s an awful excuse, but it WILL be what Billy uses to defend Sideshow Bob.

If it makes you feel any better
this franchise has been run into the ground many times before and managed to recover. Yes it’s frustrating.
Worst of all is the fact that management does not seem concerned. When losing and lackluster performance are deemed acceptable it’s hard to envision positive change. Management is mailing it in, collecting the revenue sharing checks, probably making a profit. The players notice and it effects their performance. But that’s ok, because Geren will simply resort to his book of excuses.
Dude, your optimism has been one of the highlights of the year. Don't give up now!

I'm confused.
We put up six runs against a really good pitcher, and we only lost it because we were starting our 8th starter, Devine had a bad day (his first ever, almost), and Fuentes allowed a bloop broken bat flare that dropped. It’s frustrating, I get that, and I’m frustrated too. But it’s a hell of a lot better than getting blown out, and it’s doesn’t mean players and management aren’t trying.
Dude
it’s pretty shitty when you drop 4 in the top of the first and lose.
Official Athletics Nation Rotating Tagline Editor - Pam liked my old sig better.

Oh, I know.
It was definitely shitty, and it sucked ass. But it was a lot better than getting blown out. A close game against the best team in the majors? I can live with that.
It should have been a blowout the other way.
We had a 4-0 lead before Boston even got to bat.
That’s a joke.

I wish the game went the other way too. It sucked. But it doesn’t mean they didn’t try, and it was better than losing 10-0.

I disagree with that.
There’s no excuse for being spotted 4 runs, losing 8-6, and coming off with an “Oh well, at least we didn’t get blown out” attitude.
That’s exactly why this team is going nowhere right now. A good team adds on and ends up winning that game by scoring 8 or 9 runs — a good team, as we saw, can chip away at a lead and come back and win.
You know the A’s wouldn’t do that if they were down 4-0 in the first.

Kouzmanoff should have been sat down and fined for his non-running out of the ball he got thrown out at 2B in the NY series.
Willingham should have been sat down and or publicly embarrassed for his non-defense that allowed Youkilis to score last night.
Fuentes was not warmed up all the way when he was brought in last night. Fuentes has been used inefficiently all season.
The players still covertly respond with claps and nods when the fans bag on Geren loudly in the stadium.
It seems obvious that the club is not playing with intensity. They’re playing like workmen putting in their time while their minds are on quitting time and the bar. They’re playing like workmen who give as little as possible to a weak boss who’s too weak to impart discipline to cajole/scare the workers into giving 95-110%.

Beating a Dead Horse
Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated talking about Bob Geren:
Okay, long story about how Beane is sticking by Geren, blah blah blah…and then at the bottom tucked into the bullet points about other teams, is this gem:
<<• Kirk Gibson’s no-nonsense approach is paying of for the surprising Diamondbacks. In his first full-year as manager, he has stressed accountability, and a team that underachieved in recent years has obviously listened to his message.>>
Oh, the irony, the irony.

Goals for this inning
Run out each groundball out hard. That’s honestly all I want to see. Someone ground out and sprint to first anyway.
With the speed Sweeney, Willingham, and Matsui choose to run out likely outs, it literally would take 4 errors for them to make it to first. Rajai Davis couldn’t hit but at least he tried to beat plays out.
Thank you for the observation.
Not running at least 90% on ground balls should be a floggable offense.

One doesn’t have to bend over the public to get one. Cities have caught on, and we’re never getting a park until we have owners who feel they can exploit fans and cites instead of being shepherds of the game.
Some folks do
That Allen dude did, and he built a new football stadium with his dough. It’s a private team, why does the public have to build a park? Assholes.

Pennington hustles into a double.
Let’s say DDJ hits the ball to the same spot – Pedroia may not be positioned there because they’re not at DP depth and Pennington’s not stealing.
Pennington should be fast enough to score on a single there.

That makes sense
It’s a song I’ve heard but don’t know well enough to remember the lyrics.
But seriously, folks....
I was in Cambridge, MA, last week for my 25th reunion...
…and was remembering that back in the ’80s you could show up at Fenway on the day of the game and get into the bleachers.
Sox bleacher bums were drunk and obnoxious, however.

It's not as if the Sox weren't good at the time.
Even in 1986, you could usually get into pretty much any game (even Clemens’ starts), though only in the bleachers.

Cahill looks really good.
And that pitch to Gonzalez was good too, so it’s not even a qualified statement.

I started watching the Casey Anthony trial when I got up so I'm still in my pjs. Think the A's will hold off scoring while I grab a shower?

I agree....if and when the A's start winning the people will start to come in time.
But seriously, folks....
At that point, if I was the owner, I'd laugh and move them to San Jose anyway.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
For purely selfish reasons I don't want them to move to San Jose
when I come out to visit and see a game I’d much rather go to Oakland over San Jose.
But seriously, folks....
Obviously I don't care, I have no ties to either city.
Whichever one gives the A’s a sparkly ball park and a good team gets my vote.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
I'm a Sacramento boy but I do have a soft spot for Oakland
San Jose is a place I’ve been but it made no impression on me at all.
But seriously, folks....
But a single against a no-doubles defense.

Are they trying to appeal to blue collar fans or white collar fans…….or both? I don’t get it.
What other slogans are possible under the circumstances?
