Mark Ellis traded to Colorado

The A's have opened up a roster spot, maybe Chris Carter will stay. I would also like to take the time to say good bye and good luck to one of the greatest A's over the past 10 years.

Oakland Athletics trade Mark Ellis and cash to the for RHP Bruce Billings and a player to be named later.

Who would you like to see promoted next, and does this signify a selling spree, or just Weeks is too good to go anywhere?

3 reasons for PTBNL

1 – waiting for trading window to open
2 – guy is on the DL and you can’t trade a guy on the DL
3 – team wants to pick among a group of possible players — CR wants MaEl now, A’s want player X, Y or Z so Rockies agree to let Beane mull it over until such-and-such a date before deciding among them.

Sad to see Mark Ellis go

But I think it was the right move. Hopefully he gets a chance to start for Colorado and gets to experience some post-season success.

I didn’t really expect to get anything of value back for him at this point and I don’t know much about Billings so that seems about right.

Just hoping for successful careers for Ellis and Weeks from this point onward.

by OkayJay81 on Jun 30, 2011 12:04 PM PDT reply actions

I have seen one A's game in person since the 1998 season

and it just so happens that the game I saw was this past Saturday night in Philadelphia — Mark Ellis’ last game on the field for the A’s.

In his last plate appearance in the green and gold, MaEl blooped a single to CF, driving in Cliff Pennington to extend the A’s lead from 2-1 to 3-1. And he caught the final out of the game at 1st, finishing off a tremendous 4-6-3.

I am very, very grateful that I saw Mark’s last innings on the field with the A’s. Mark, you’ll always be a Gold Glove winner to A’s fans!

Really sad about this

Mark was the Athletic that I wanted to see retire with the team. He’s such a classy guy, was a good hitter for a second baseman until this year, and played the most amazing defense at 2B, making it look easy.

That player to be named later better be a decent prospect at least or I’ll feel like the team got robbed on this one.

Why? We'd still have to pay his salary.

Fuentes wouldn’t be bad trade chip. His 1-8 record is ugly but he’s been horribly misused. Several teams were looking for LHP relievers, IIRC.

by NateHST on Jun 30, 2011 12:22 PM PDT up reply actions

the Bobs don't seem to know how to use him

You’re right; used better and with some luck he’d be a better reliever. But, I don’t see Melvin turning him into a LOOGY anytime soon. If he’s still going to pitch to RHB like 70% of the time, might as well release him so he stops sucking for us.

CORRECTED

Corrected: Mark Ellis has been traded to Colorado for a chicken salad sandwich, and a half order of french fries.

Mr Bean was hoping to strengthen the A’s lineup by adding a hitter that hit above .210 or had some speed, or had some power, but he ended up settling for the sandwich. “I tried to get a full plate of fries, but their owner balked, and I was hungry” said Mr Bean.

A’s insiders are worried about what will happen without Ellis’ hefty .220 average in their lineup. “It will be difficult to replace him, we all like Mark, but we’ll have to try to make due with a dynamic .300+ hitter with terrific speed until we find someone who can truly replace Mark”.

In the mean time, Mr Bean enjoyed his sandwich. “The chicken was a little dry, but I added some cheese to it and it tasted Gooooooood”.

Not unexpected. A move for the future (in committing to Weeks). A good move. The right move. But…

…that doesn’t mean I can’t be just a little sad at losing a player that I have long liked and respected.

Good luck to Mr Ellis. I wish him well.

the next longest-tenured Athletic after Ellis is going to be—Zooks (would have been Cust if he stayed)

The next longest continuous tenure is indeed Kurt Suzuki.

Prior to this year:
Suzuki,, Ryan Sweeney, and Joey Devine are the only three players to have spent all three of the last three seasons in the A’s organization and to have never been sent to the minors other than rehab assignments.

Atleast we didn’t get Mortensen back in the trade. He better not be the PTBNL. I saw him pitch a couple weeks ago vs the Dodgers and it looked like batting practice.

Mark Ellis has been a fixture on the A's for a decade

where A’s players were swapped in and out of the lineup like cheap fuses. His defense will be missed. He was laughingly denied a gold glove—had he been playing for the Yankees, he would have won no less than five.

He rode a unicorn and he will be missed.

Good luck in Colorado, E. I miss you already.

during a Spring Training game, Robert Buan calling the game,

Mark Ellis was simultaneously on first base and third base. If you ever heard a Buancast, you’d understand. Robert was good at many things. PxP was not one of them. In the game thread, it was speculated that Ellis was on a unicorn to be on both bases at the same time.

I know this is better for MaEl, but he was really the last tie to that mid-2000s A’s team that I came to love and celebrate and agonize over with the then-new AN.

I will never forget his launching that huge HR in the ninth in Game 5 of the 02 Twins series to (almost) bring us back from the brink. And all the slick fielding and his humble persona.

At least I have two Mark Ellis kids bats (brought to you by Ross) to remember him by.

We were standing in his root beer float line when it happened.

We were all like happy little children waiting for Markellis to make us our root beer floats, when 10 minutes later, inexplicably, he was gone. It wasn’t until later, while still at the event, that we found out he was gone for good. Kylie shrank about a foot and turned white as a sheet.

When we saw that he left the root beer stand

I said “Oh! He must be starting today, since it’s a day game after a night game, they probably want to give Jemile a rest.” …..

I felt a little better on the way home, listening to CT, to know that this is a good deal for Mark. But I don’t quite believe in the rosy picture that Chris painted about Mark knowing that the trade was coming when he came to the event this morning. His wife was pulled off the root beer float pouring table and left in tears.

I had my first A's-related dream a few nights ago.

I dreamt that Mark Ellis (possibly the whitest man alive) ran a popular Korean taco stand in his spare time. Not just as an investor, he cooked and served the patrons, too. (A hard worker, even in my dream.) I had to go tell him how much I would miss him when he was done as an A.

Ellie getting traded had clearly been on my mind recently. I’d been dreading it. But I’m glad Billy set him up in a place where he’d play everyday, an where he’d have a chance to stick it to the Giants.

I love Mark Ellis. And he reaffirmed that love at every turn. Good luck and come back soon!

Mark Ellis

One of things about watching a season-full of baseball is the attachment you form with particular players. The only way you really get attached to a player is with time. I’m excited about Weeks’ potential, and think this move is best for Ellis (hey, 3 for 5 with a home run in his first game), but the thing about guys like Ellis is that you really root for them, not because they play for your favorite team but because they seem like good guys and you have so many memories associated with them.

People mention the home run in the 2002 ALDS, which I witnessed, but there are countless examples of brilliant defense that blur together in the collective memory. This is a move that makes a lot of sense for all concerned, but it still makes me very sad.

It's tough to see him go like this

It stings seeing Ellis get dealt even if it makes sound business sense. Sometimes I feel like we’ve lost a sort of human element. Anyway, the high turnover definitely has an emotional cost.

I value sabermetrics and Beane’s ability to trade when value is high, but a team is more than just a spreadsheet. I have no problem with this deal, and I am happy with Beane’s overall body of work, but I think this team is lacking in morale and leadership as much as power hitting. I’ve digressed wildly…

Good luck, Mark! Go A’s.

One needn't be a sabermetrician to conclude

it’s time for Jemile Weeks to take over at 2B for the A’s and Mark Ellis deserves a shot to start somewhere else. Old school thinking would have told you the same thing.

Yeah, I agree.

I’m not critical of the move, and I am very excited about Jemile Weeks. I was just reflecting on why it’s especially tough for me to see Ellis go.
