Shallow Post: 3 fave, 3 least fave players from Beane Era
I like all the stats as much as the next person, but how about we go for an exceedingly shallow post (and forgive me if I don't have enough tenure to make one).
Your 3 least favorite players / 3 most favorite players from Beane's reign.
3 fave:
1) Hatteberg - loved the guy. Great person, improved dramatically at 1B, always seemed to get on base when you needed him to
2) Scutaro - suspect he'll be on a ton of lists. who can't like Scuataro - seemed goofy, seemed a good guy. His bases clearing double in the ALDS was perhaps the most loud moment of an A's game I've ever been to. The collective relief that we would make it to the next round this time
3) Rajai - made last season interesting. By all accounts, one of the hardest working guys on the team; given the ups and downs he had to get to the majors, seems like he had a lot of grit and determination.
3 Least Favorite (won't use hate)
1) Jeremy Giambi - not for the missed slide so much as the kinda gib he cut; just never had the right attitude
2) Bobby Crosby - It was the sheer sense of entitlement he felt after 1 good season, and 3 season's of chasing sliders away
3) Jason Kendall - Not the lack of power, but something about Jason Kendall just did not feel right. Could never put my finger on it

Billy Beane lives in Danville, and not one of the above players hails from Danville OR Gilroy.
I just don’t see how those guys have anything to do with Beane’s area.

Hmmmm...
Likes:
1. N. Swisher (Actually liked playing in Oakland, had some pop and versitility, not to mention personality)
2. M. Scutaro (Lil’ Papi was the shit)
3. M. Ellis (Solid up the middle, used to be able to hit, nice guy)
Dislikes:
1. E. Brown (christ…)
2. B. Crosby (What needs to be said here?)
3. S. Gallagher (He just pissed me off every time he pitched)

ok
Faves:
1. Miggy – the energy!
2. Swisher – of course
3. Hudson – the bulldog, love him
And I want to say Frank Thomas cuz he was just so AWESOME when he was here, but he was just the one year, so he’s bumped to 4.
Least Faves:
1. Holliday – great player, but he never smiled! ; ) hate what we gave up for 3 months
2. BoCro – unoriginal, but true
3. Byrnes – it pains me to write this b/c he did provide some high entertainment but I can never forgive him for not touching home plate in the 2003 ALCS
and yet, your #1 favorite is a guy that just stopped fucking running in between 3B and home during the same ALCS you hate Byrnes for.

I was pissed Tejada more for that than Byrnes.
Tejada’s action was simply boneheaded. I am convinced that Byrnes was knocked loopy for a few moments and probably wasn’t even sure where he was, let alone that home base needed tagging. I can’t fault him for that.
Spread the diaper in the position of the diamond with you at bat. Then fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher's mound. Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together. sue me, bro
I recall this well and I screamed at MIggy thru the tv too…but Miggy won an MVP and deservedly so it so it’s not my primary memory of him
I’m not claiming it’s consistent or stands up to anyone’s else’s logic – this is purely subjective faves / least faves that came to mind
OK, I'll play.
Faves:
1. Chavvy. So smooth, so clean, great ethic.
2. Huddy. Such a competitor. I still follow his work in Atlanta.
3. John Jaha. Maybe it’s the rescue from the scrapheap or his good guy demeanor. No, it’s the 35 bombs. Yes, he’s a one year wonder, but I loved the guy.
I’m done with this guy:
1. T-Long. I don’t even want to see a highlight with him in the frame.
2. Ariel Prieto. Wasted pick, all hype and not much to show on the field.
3. Jose Guillen. So much potential, so little production. He was a teASe in the individual sense of the word.

Don't really understand the Guillen pick
wasn’t really here long enough to say “so little production”, and he was one of the only guys to show up vs. Boston in the ALDS that year.

Favorites:

Eric Byrnes
Least Favorites:
Jack Cust

Bring Dan Haren back to Oakland!
Tough list to pare down, on both sides of the coin.
Faves: Barry Zito, for well, being Barry Zito. Only guy on the Gnats that I actively root for (with apologies to Miggy- it’s easy for me to root for Barry, because he contributes so little to the Giants’ success.) Gil Heredia, because not walking guys is cool. Docked a point for forgetting that truism when the 2000 post-season rolled around. Coco Crisp, for being more talented than Rajai Davis, and rocking the Bake McBride ’fro sometimes. (the Oscar Gamble comp seems a bit played out)
UnFaves: Bobby Crosby, for being Bobby Crosby. I’m sure Mark Ellis isn’t thrilled with being displaced by Jemile, but you just know the guy’s not going to be a whiny-ass bitch about it. Eric Patterson…there’s a great quote about Bobby Murcer, something along the lines of: “His role is to sit on the bench and personify the Yankees’ awesome depth.” When Patterson sat on the A’s bench, what did he personify? How about when he actually played? Versatility, my ass. Grudging respect for his “fuck you, AN” homer last year. (he butchered a ball in left field, everybody in the game thread deservedly ripped on him, and he led off the next inning with a home run. Everybody in the thread acknowledged his metaphorical middle finger to the haters.)
Oh, and Matt Holliday can eat me. If you hadn’t acted like a petulant douche while you were here, if you had made an offensive contribution, I probably wouldn’t miss CarGon nearly as much.

I remember thinking, "Oh good, I needed another reason to hate the Yankees"
Yeah, Gil was a total Moneyball pitcher. To paraphrase Billy Beane, “His shit didn’t work in the playoffs.” I’ll usually watch any postseason game to the bitter end regardless of the apparent outcome. But on that day, I turned my TV off in disgust.
I still really liked the guy, though. Go figure.

I had to add my two middle categories
Lof: Scott Hatteberg, Mark Ellis, Huston Street
Had a soft spot for, even though their stats did not always bear it out: Johnny Damon, Mark Bellhorn, Jim Mecir, Keiichi Yabu, Greg Myers, Jack Hannahan
I was meh about, when everyone else raved: Eric Chavez, Nick Swisher, Daric Barton

Quickly,
Fav’s – Tejada (let the wrong guy walk), Dye (let the wrong guy walk), and Hudson (nice trade, Billy)
Least Fav – Chavez (see above – when Tejada got dealt, should’ve put the team on his shoulders offensively, and failed time and time again.), Jason Giambi (stood in front of his locker all season long and swore – SWORE – how badly he wanted to remain an Athletic … liar.), Eric Byrnes (one of the worst defensive outfielders in the history of baseball – at any level – made your T-ball level LF’er look good – “loved” because he was goofy, not at all good.)
Oh, and any player who was/is supposedly “nice” — because, unless you happen to know the guy personally, this is assumption.

Least Favorite(s) First
Arthur, Arthur, Arthur Rhodes – F’ing hated that guy, his “pitching” and his attitude
Brian “OMG I gave it up yet again” Fuentes – tonight, a perfect example
(tie) Ben Grieve / Ariel Prieto: picks that didn’t pan
Favorites (tough)
Frank Thomas: BMOC – guy was awesome with us; saw his first game against Chisox where he killed it. One of my favorite moments
Hudson: dope. (i’d actually give tie to big 3 here)
Ellis / Crisp / Cust / Tejada / too many others:
Cust and I had a beer in Chicago, but I only suspected it was Jack (in street clothes); really nice guy. Crisp: love the enthusiasm Ellis: all around cool cat at my position…just a gamer Tejada: man.. he was the shit
Special Category:
Matt “I’m going on an Oakland A’s” Holliday – I actually like the guy as a Cardinal, but man, he ate it big-time with us and cost a ton, but he’s also (i think) a 2nd half guy…we just had him for wrong half
Kendall: always liked the guy, and the heads up play…i mean…dude might not have been a great hitter with us, but he was always in the game, making smart plays…

Really hard to limit to three but...
Going to try some more under-the-radar picks (i.e. not Tejada, Chavez, Hudson etc…)
Faves:
E. Durazo (We could use another bat like that now)
R. Davis (Run Rajai Run!)
M. Kotsay (Solid)
Least faves:
T. Long (Still remember his diss to Raiders fans..and season ending Backwards K in the 2003 ALDS)
B. Crosby (Total Bum…)
A. Rhodes (Knew it was bad news the moment we signed him)
Here's mine...
Favs were Tejada for being fun to watch…Ellis for being so good with the glove…Erubiel Durazo for having a cool name.
Least favs were Jeremy Giambi for being dumb and for THAT play at the plate…Crosby for being a whiny bitch and Brian Fuentes because everytime he comes into a game I have a sinking feeling.
Why is this subject "shallow"?
Here’s mine…
Faves:
Scutaro
Hatteberg
Mulder
Soft spot for: Greg Myers and Greg Smith
Least Faves
Cust
Durazo

Holliday
Liked at the time, but they lost me on their way out: T-Long, Jason Giambi
Jason Giambi played the A’s for a better contract with the Yankees, and even lied directly about wanting to stay. Sorry, that’s unforgivable to me.
T-Long whined about not getting the “respect” of playing time as he left. Dude, if you had played decently, you would have gotten all the “respect” you could handle.

What happened to T-Long
I vaguely remember a stint with the Yankees about 5 years ago… was that the last time anyone ever heard of him?
Last played in 2006 for the Yanks
Did some Googling and apparently he’s teaching at a baseball academy in Alabama. Doesn’t look like he’ll be playing center anytime soon:

Hudson, Tejada
Favorites: Tim Hudson; Miguel Tejada; Eric Byrnes
Least Favorite: Milton Bradley; Bobby Crosby;
I like this thread idea
It’s not that easy to choose. My top three:
1. Tim Hudson
2. Nick Swisher
3. Miguel Tejada
Bottom three:
1. Bobby Crosby
2. Esteban Loaiza
3. Eric Karros
"PECOTA can pretty much kiss my ass."-Nico
unorthodox
Favorite:
1. Eric Chavez (they rode this horse into the ground)
2. Billy Koch (IMO the best of the reliever reclimations)
3.Ramon Hernandez (still have yet to duplicate the production, leadership etc. at catcher.
Least:
1. Jermaine Dye (whiny guy, got hurt a lot, spurned the A’s for less money)
2. Rich Harden (this has more to do with him never being healthy/refusing a switch to the pen)
3. Jack Cust. Sorry folks, the only clutch this man has is in his car.
Favorites -- Tim Hudson, Eric Chavez, Henry Rodriguez
Least Favorites — Bob Crosby, Esteban Loaiza, Arthur Rhodes

Hard to choose a top 3
I’ll go with:
1) Chavez. This one’s easy. He, Pedro, and Nomar are my top 3 overall favorites. I followed the Red Sox more closely than the A’s until 2004.
2) Haren. I remember seeing him pitch in the ‘04 WS and later being excited about the A’s trading for him and putting him in the rotation.
3) Duke. Hard not to like a righty who throws low to mid 80s, is not a sidearmer or knuckleballer, and still strikes out a guy per inning.
Also, Ellis and Anderson. I had a big soft spot for Dan Johnson. I’m still a huge Coco fan even though he’s apparently unlearned how to walk this season.
I guess I just really like injury prone players.
I don’t really dislike many baseball players other than Yankees. It’s not really that I hate the Yankees — I actually think they’re good for baseball in the same way the Heat are good for basketball — it’s just that a lot of their guys have these disgusting smirks on their faces all the time. Jeter, Teix, A-Rod. Can’t stand ’em.
Tough One
Top Three:
1) Chavy – My all-time favorite player. Hustled, hit, fielded and was a team leader. Even in his twilight years (especially 2006) he was a gritty leader.
2) Swisher – Fun guy, played hard, I liked seeing him
3) Hudson – Lil’ bulldog. Looked like he was going to rip your head off when he pitched
Bottom Three:
1) Arthur Rhodes – The face of the dysfunctional Oakland ‘pen in 2004. Jerk
2) Bobby Crosby – Apart from the fact that he destroyed Ellis’ shoulder in 2004, just wasn’t productive
3) Jeremy Giambi – Slow poke, didn’t make an effort, completely worthless
I will always have a soft spot for Zito, Haren, Coco and Ellis.
Top two favorites is easy:
Eric Chavez and Nick Swisher.
Lots of candidates for #3. Frank Thomas is one of my favorite players of all-time, but in spite of one wonderful year with us I can’t really think of him as truly an A. So I’ll go with Ramón Hernandez for #3.
Least favorites: Kendall, Kotsay and Giambi.
People will wonder about Kotsay. I don’t know, I just didn’t like the guy. Something about him bugged me.

I nearly included Kotsay on my list.
Seemed like a more talented Kendall to me. All grititude, no substance.

I feel similarly about Giambi
Giambi is just a more talented Giambi. Does that make me dislike him less? I suppose a little.

Top and Bottom 3
Top 3
1. Zito – That curveball back in the day. His quirkiness. Gotta love the guy.
2. Swisher – What is not to love?
3. Mulder – Went to my alma mater Michigan State – great pitcher.
Bottom 3
1. Kouzmanoff – Seems like a really awesome guy – also seems like he never found a GIDP he didn’t want to get, or a pitch outside of the zone he didn’t want to swing through
2. Travis Buck – everything look so good, yet everything never ever got put together.
3. Mark Redman – looked like we might’ve had a decent pick up there, instead he just went from being an OK 4th or 5th guy to just garbage. When you lose the division by one game you can look to him as being a possible scapegoat.
Visit my blog the Todd Van Poppel Rookie Card Retirement Plan!!
Redman is a good one.
That guy was a total asshat. Cashed in on the only good year he had and stole a paycheck from us.

He actually had two good years before joining the A's.
He wasn’t awful with the A’s, but not as good as he had been before either.

People still hate Holliday for the not smiling stuff?
An A’s batter could flip me off after every AB if he posted a 2.2 WAR in a half-season in Oakland.
"If you wrote something for which someone sent you a check, if you cashed the check and it didn't bounce, and if you then paid the light bill with the money, I consider you talented." —Stephen King
While still good, it was just about the worst performance of his career.....
You do that, while “appearing” like you’d rather be anywhere else, then go completely off as soon as you get the heck out of there, it’s gonna leave a mark.
Rational or not, I took great pleasure in his series costing error against LA that year.
He went from Coors to the Coliseum
"If you wrote something for which someone sent you a check, if you cashed the check and it didn't bounce, and if you then paid the light bill with the money, I consider you talented." —Stephen King
But I expected a 10 WAR player who would've lead us to another championship.

Worked out for a full year, that's slightly better
than Barton in 2010. So Danbot’s “most productive position player we’ve had in years” is correct.

Ooh, I just did the math and it's not.
Using Fangraphs WAR, Holliday’s Oakland performance prorated to a full year is 5.0, whereas Barton’s WAR in 2010 was 5.1.
Close enough to be within the margin for error, for sure, but it doesn’t support a claim of Holliday being the best.

How many other players have had their worst year or half year with the A's
In particular in the middle of their career – Johnny Damon stands out. Several of Jermaine Dye’s latter years were bad.
Not sure you can count aging veterans though Erik Karros, Jason Giambi plus a buncg of others
2009 wasn't Holliday's worse year.
Yes, it was down from 2007 and 2008, but not worse than his 2006 or prior.
Sweet is the lore which Nature brings; / Our meddling intellect
Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:— / We murder to dissect.
Are you rating all of 2009 or the A's 1/2?
Because he went absolute ape shit once he got out of Dodge.
Either way.
He did play better in St Louis than in Oakland, but I don’t think the difference is as large as commonly imagined.
Using fWAR, his actual WAR for the year was 5.6. His Oakland WAR prorated to a full year would be 5.0. His St Louis WAR prorated to a full year would be 6.4.
For any of those three, my statement stands: down from 2007 and 2008 (and 2010), but still better than fully seasons in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Sweet is the lore which Nature brings; / Our meddling intellect

This was harder than I thought.
Top 3:
Hudson – I just loved everything about him. The pitching, obviously, but had a great attitude or swagger about him. Also, I remember his pinch running A’s one of the funniest things I’ve seen during an A’s game. IIRC, he bellyflopped into second, and took a ridiculously bad turn at 3rd. I’d be less funny if he hadn’t scored.
Scutaro – So many great moments. I remember getting goosebumps from my living room dying a playoff game as a sold-out Coliseum did the Marco Scutaro chant, and then he doubled. And for the goofiness. Once, during one of Swisher and Bradley’s handshakes, i saw Marco doing the handshake by himself a few feet away. Love.
Ellis – Because he’s Mark Ellis. I can’t not love him. Plus, he was in my one-and-only A’s related dream (not dirty).
Honorable mention: Eric Chavez, Ramon Hernandez.
Bottom 3: I don’t know. I remember not being too fond of Jason Isringhausen, but otherwise. I’m drawing a blank.

my turn
Favorites: Hudson (the original Timmy), Cust, and Ellis. Honorable mention: Stairs, Giambi (Jason, not the other one), Frank Thomas (2006 version), and Swisher.
Bums: Byrnes (touch the plate, dumbass), Billy Koch (for making Ass-Jack a hero), and DFA Emil Brown. Dishonorable mention: Tejada (for stopping to argue while a play was in progress), Giambi (the stupid one who didn’t slide), T. Long, and Piazza.
I don't feel that I'm feeling your feelings, about these feelings that you feel.
3+
Top 3:
1. Mark Ellis (defensive skill, comeback)
2. Eric Byrnes (enthusiasm)
3. Tejada / early Chavez (defensive + offensive skill)
Also liked Scutaro – guy who came from nowhere to get his own cheer at the playoffs.
Bottom 3:
1. Jeremy Giambi (slide)
2. Milton Bradley (actions)
3. Arthur “Home Run” Rhodes (home runs)
Also agree with Crosby on these lists, and got tired of the AN Cust debate.
