Open Thread: Game 76 (Oakland Athletics at New York Mets)

Oakland Athletics at New York Mets, Jun 23, 2011 10:10 AM PDT

So we are almost halfway through the season, we have had the draft, we've had a long losing streak and a shorter winning streak that, unfortunately, came to an end. But hey, we have the moving to look forward to, so we have that. Which is good.

Today's game features Graham Godfrey and Chris Capuano, so there is an equal chance of awesomeness (Mets Offense continuing to implode) or horribleness (Godfrey relapses to his first start).

Oh, and we might see a Chris Carter sighting!

Notes:

  • With Daric Barton sent down to AAA for some "Work", the A's first base situation was a little iffy, with Jackson filling in. With Willingham going to the DL (about time), Chris Carter has arrived in Oakland, where he presumably will take over 1B duties.
  • Michael Taylor is OPSing in the .800's in Sacramento, but is not batting very well.
  • Kevin Kouzmanoff is not proving himself in AAA either.
  • Mark Ellis's days on the A's are numbered. He will be used in a utility role for now, but he is not a 1B, its very questionable if he can play 3B, and Adam Rosales is a better play than he is right now. The only option is a trade, but I do not think we can get much besides salary relief. Then again, we did get Joey Devine for the shattered remnants of Mark Kotsay.
  • With McCarthy and Ross due back soon, Godfrey is going to be bound for the minors. The question then becomes should we send down Outman or Moscoso, or should we send down both and try Rich Harden in the rotation again.
Lets win this thing.

i'm sorry, but starting mark ellis at 1B is absolutely criminal

why bother calling up carter. this loyalty to mark ellis is baffling!

he's not. the legendary mark ellis is our starting 1B today.

i guess they figured that playing second all these years, he must’ve learned how to play 1B purely by osmosis…

I bet he's better than Carter out there, though

true. anything can happen.

but i wouldn’t equate the a’s starting godfrey that night with them starting ellis today at 1B. i don’t care if carter landed at kennedy and arrived at the ballpark with 30 seconds to go before first pitch. he should still get the start.

by jsnraider on Jun 23, 2011 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

But Ellis needs some time too.

There is a good chance he becomes our utility guy for a little while. Better make sure he can do it/get advice from others before he’s the only option.

by LoneStranger on Jun 23, 2011 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions

why does ellis need time??

i mean i understand that he’s a nice guy, and a lifelong athletic, but i just don’t understand how we can continue throwing him out there when he can’t hit a lick. and NOW we’re finding new positions for him. i don’t get it.

Carter was on the red-eye to NY after driving from Tuscon to Phoenix to make the flight (which was then delayed an hour or so).

He’s tired. I’m guessing that Ellis starts, and Carter comes in for an at-bat or two later in the game, depending on how the game goes.

I can’t remember being more excited in 1 single day about the future of each of my favorite teams. 1.) With all the recent good things the A’s are doing. With Geren, Kouzz, LaRoche, and Barton finally outta here. With Jemile being up and playing great. And, waking up this morning to the news of Carter being called up! 2.) With the NBA Draft tonight and all these crazy trade rumors flying all around. What a day! oh, and 3.) With TEAM USA winning last night, setting up the dream Championship Matchup this Saturday at the Rose Bowl v. Mexico

lots of Trade Chips being passed around

which is shocking, because the draft is so weak. For example, The Spurs are shopping Tony Parker for the Kings #7 pick……So, there are moves to be made.

I don't think so

The Kings have a nice young foundation being built – Tyreke and DeMarcus. And, with the #7 pick, lots of rumors going on: i.e., the Spurs offering Tony Parker, the 76ers offering Iggy. ETC.! The Warriros, although I’m pulling for them, are historically bad at this. I hope both teams do well.

Someone needs to explain this to me....

Conventional wisdom on AN seems to say that a player’s performance shouldn’t be measured by the RBI stat, yet the same CW uses total runs scored in a given year to measure a teams performance. Isn’t there a bit of a disconnect in there?

"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat."--The Boys of Summer

by alox on Jun 23, 2011 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Couple things.

1. On a whole team-wide scale, RBI opportunities should balance out, and so team runs scored is a far better measurement of a team’s offensive performance than a single player’s RBIs.

2. Even then, team wOBA or WAR is much better than runs scored.

by danmerqury on Jun 23, 2011 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions

better explanation

the artist formerly known as inbillywetrust

by stm72 on Jun 23, 2011 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think so

A particular player’s RBI total is largely based on how many times he hits with runners on base – which has nothing to do with his ability as a hitter. A team’s overall RS isn’t based as much on that kind of happenstance.

Though I’d think people would tend to look at park effects and also offensive run-elements in evaluating the team’s offensive performance, too.

…it’s more about laying out different possibilities and maybe which one you think the A’s may go with.

That hardly means you’re advocating one over the rest, but maybe that’s difficult for some people to understand when they read.

A couple times I’ve been a little unclear on something you’ve said but you’ve clarified it in an exchange or two.

The A’s considering hanging on to Ellis for now because there could still be questions about Weeks cooling off or his own injury history is a perfectly reasonable thing to mention.

That would be amazing.

Even better if we won the World Series, too.

You don't worry that it would destroy the game as you know it?

You don't think it would be a little greedy?

Wouldn’t feel at all bad for the Astros fans who would watch their team go 0-162 while yours goes 162-0?

A Kinsella plot would be something like a 1000 inning game, not a 162-0 season.

A 1000 inning game sounds like a Chabon plot.

You're remarkable in a funny way. Or funny in a remarkable way.

it would have to be set in Pittsburgh.

It sounds like a Robert Jordan book to me

With chapters spent on the people working the concessions, the ushers, the parking lot attendants, etc.

I would think that a team winning anything over 40 or 50 games in a row in MLB

would mean that the entire simulation that runs this planet had run amok, and volcanos would be erupting, giant lizards would be farting over Delaware, and of course, zombies would roam the earth… except they won’t want our brains… they’ll want OUR JOBS!

Pretty sure the A’s are mentioned specifically in the Bible.

Pineda has to be the front runner here.

But I could see Hosmer getting it, if he has a good second half.
