Open Thread: Game 76 (Oakland Athletics at New York Mets)
Oakland Athletics at New York Mets, Jun 23, 2011 10:10 AM PDT
So we are almost halfway through the season, we have had the draft, we've had a long losing streak and a shorter winning streak that, unfortunately, came to an end. But hey, we have the moving to look forward to, so we have that. Which is good.
Today's game features Graham Godfrey and Chris Capuano, so there is an equal chance of awesomeness (Mets Offense continuing to implode) or horribleness (Godfrey relapses to his first start).
Oh, and we might see a Chris Carter sighting!
Notes:
- With Daric Barton sent down to AAA for some "Work", the A's first base situation was a little iffy, with Jackson filling in. With Willingham going to the DL (about time), Chris Carter has arrived in Oakland, where he presumably will take over 1B duties.
- Michael Taylor is OPSing in the .800's in Sacramento, but is not batting very well.
- Kevin Kouzmanoff is not proving himself in AAA either.
- Mark Ellis's days on the A's are numbered. He will be used in a utility role for now, but he is not a 1B, its very questionable if he can play 3B, and Adam Rosales is a better play than he is right now. The only option is a trade, but I do not think we can get much besides salary relief. Then again, we did get Joey Devine for the shattered remnants of Mark Kotsay.
- With McCarthy and Ross due back soon, Godfrey is going to be bound for the minors. The question then becomes should we send down Outman or Moscoso, or should we send down both and try Rich Harden in the rotation again.

i'm sorry, but starting mark ellis at 1B is absolutely criminal
why bother calling up carter. this loyalty to mark ellis is baffling!
i mean we just sent down an actual first baseman who's basically hitting the same as ellis!
what the hell is the point?? we’ve now just downgraded ourselves at 1B!
He's there, but not in the lineup according to SuSlu

he's not. the legendary mark ellis is our starting 1B today.
i guess they figured that playing second all these years, he must’ve learned how to play 1B purely by osmosis…
I bet he's better than Carter out there, though

true. anything can happen.
but i wouldn’t equate the a’s starting godfrey that night with them starting ellis today at 1B. i don’t care if carter landed at kennedy and arrived at the ballpark with 30 seconds to go before first pitch. he should still get the start.
The guy is probably operating on very little, if any, sleep since sometime yesterday afternoon or earler

in that case, i would rather see rosie over there than ellis
at least he has some experience playing the corners.
But Ellis needs some time too.
There is a good chance he becomes our utility guy for a little while. Better make sure he can do it/get advice from others before he’s the only option.
by LoneStranger on Jun 23, 2011 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions
why does ellis need time??
i mean i understand that he’s a nice guy, and a lifelong athletic, but i just don’t understand how we can continue throwing him out there when he can’t hit a lick. and NOW we’re finding new positions for him. i don’t get it.
You mean 6 innings
playing 1B in 2005 and 2006 doesn’t count as experience?

Carter was on the red-eye to NY after driving from Tuscon to Phoenix to make the flight (which was then delayed an hour or so).
He’s tired. I’m guessing that Ellis starts, and Carter comes in for an at-bat or two later in the game, depending on how the game goes.

Welcome Chris Carter!
With Willingham going to the DL (about time), Chris Carter has arrived in Oakland, where he presumably will take over 1B duties.
I do hope he’ll be going to New York and Philly, not sitting around waiting in Oakland…. ;)
There's no crying in baseball!
Why didn't he go on the DL when ellis came up
OH well. Gives us a reason to bring up CC.
Ellis should NEVER start 1B for Oakland.
He’s a shitty-hitting 2B for crying out loud!!
I'm sure it's a temporary solution.
Certainly not worth fretting over.

With the NBA Draft tonight and all these crazy trade rumors flying all around. What a day! oh, and 3.) I don't think so
The Kings have a nice young foundation being built – Tyreke and DeMarcus. And, with the #7 pick, lots of rumors going on: i.e., the Spurs offering Tony Parker, the 76ers offering Iggy. ETC.! The Warriros, although I’m pulling for them, are historically bad at this. I hope both teams do well.

Dude, give it a rest.
It’s not that big of a deal. It’s a one day fix. No need to overreact. Ellis will at least field the position very capably.
plus the responsibilities on covering bunts, etc... are unique. it's not brain surgery, but it does take some repitition to develop competence.
the artist formerly known as inbillywetrust
Ellis is a smart player.
I’m pretty sure he understands various scenarios, responsibilities, and how to field the position. He’ll be fine for a day.
but you need to react in real time. thinking is not a plus.
the artist formerly known as inbillywetrust
Thinking in the field is always a plus.
I don’t believe there’s any question about his reaction time.
So your point is what?
Ellis will be thinking while a play is happening and not reacting? Seems unlikely to me.
my point is that any hesitation hurts. i've seen laroche play out of position, think for a sec and blow plays. i'm not picking on laroche. i'm just saying that its not as easy as you think. there's a reason these guys get paid well.
the artist formerly known as inbillywetrust
Ellis is a superior fielder in general than Laroche.
I realize it’s not the easiest transition in the world. But Ellis has always proven to be an excellent fielder with fine reaction time so if anyone could do it – he could.
ellis's strength is his range. dunno about reaction times. i'm rooting for the guy. just saying it's not easy.

smh? that's normally what i do after you post about the importance of RBI's or whatever
the artist formerly known as inbillywetrust
Someone needs to explain this to me....
Conventional wisdom on AN seems to say that a player’s performance shouldn’t be measured by the RBI stat, yet the same CW uses total runs scored in a given year to measure a teams performance. Isn’t there a bit of a disconnect in there?
"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat."--The Boys of Summer
Couple things.
1. On a whole team-wide scale, RBI opportunities should balance out, and so team runs scored is a far better measurement of a team’s offensive performance than a single player’s RBIs.
2. Even then, team wOBA or WAR is much better than runs scored.
no. RBI is an individual player's stat by CW but the credit should be split between multiple players. runs scored is a team stat.
the artist formerly known as inbillywetrust
I don't think so
A particular player’s RBI total is largely based on how many times he hits with runners on base – which has nothing to do with his ability as a hitter. A team’s overall RS isn’t based as much on that kind of happenstance.
Though I’d think people would tend to look at park effects and also offensive run-elements in evaluating the team’s offensive performance, too.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
We are lucky to have a few solid beat reporters
compared to what some other teams have we are blessed
The only reason I hedged was because I don't read beat writers out of the bay areaq
I am sure she is the best.
Put a bird on it
Ellis probably won't net much in return
he’s a team leader, he’s a veteran w/ only this year left on his contract, and it’s true, Weeks could cool off significantly – this was his first year in AAA, yes? And I don’t understand the Rosales love.
Agreed. Let's not mention them

I dunno....
But as a fan I finally feel the team is addessing our offensive woes by opening up positions to competition. If you can hit, you will get a shot at someones job who isn’t performing. It’s refreshing. I love Ellis too, but I love the A’s more.

Hey everyone, kind of a bummer to see while watching the rain
but: I didn’t say that’s A) what I think or B) that’s what the A’s think. I said it could be one consideration if he ISN"T traded.
As I wrote today and repeated on the air, I believe Ellis WILL get traded. There could be reasons it wouldn’t happen, and that might be one. Just explaining all possible options.
I surprised to hear I take a contrarian approach when I’m a beat writer and not a columnist and don’t write opinion pieces. I do some speculating on the blog, but always explain my reasons for doing so and I’m careful to say that it’s my guesswork only.

And I don’t mind a different opinion. I’m just a little concerned if I’m coming off as too opinionated, because I’m really not supposed to.
And I did want to emphasize that I wrote and said I believe Ellis will be traded, based on what I’m hearing. I could see them wanting to be covered in the event Weeks slumps, and I don’t think they like their other options there as much as they like Ellis, but I’m not advocating anything one way or another.

Maybe it's me but I pretty much always assume that when you get into the speculation side...
…it’s more about laying out different possibilities and maybe which one you think the A’s may go with.
That hardly means you’re advocating one over the rest, but maybe that’s difficult for some people to understand when they read.
A couple times I’ve been a little unclear on something you’ve said but you’ve clarified it in an exchange or two.
The A’s considering hanging on to Ellis for now because there could still be questions about Weeks cooling off or his own injury history is a perfectly reasonable thing to mention.

but then in a bunch of furious cutting and pasting between the notes and the mainbar, it wandered back in. I think I pasted it instead of something else I’d meant to…in which case, what? I don’t even know anymore. It was 12:45 at that point, though.
My fingers apparently are more used to typing “losing streak” than winning streak.

Well, that’s understandable.

"Melvin has A's thriving on same page"
Seriously, who at MLBAM writes these headlines????
Who here would love it if the A's went 162-0 in a season?

That would be amazing.
Even better if we won the World Series, too.

You don't worry that it would destroy the game as you know it?

You don't think it would be a little greedy?
Wouldn’t feel at all bad for the Astros fans who would watch their team go 0-162 while yours goes 162-0?

A Kinsella plot would be something like a 1000 inning game, not a 162-0 season.

A 1000 inning game sounds like a Chabon plot.
You're remarkable in a funny way. Or funny in a remarkable way.
it would have to be set in Pittsburgh.

depends, would we roll in the playoffs, too?
by Leopold Bloom on Jun 23, 2011 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions
I would think that a team winning anything over 40 or 50 games in a row in MLB
would mean that the entire simulation that runs this planet had run amok, and volcanos would be erupting, giant lizards would be farting over Delaware, and of course, zombies would roam the earth… except they won’t want our brains… they’ll want OUR JOBS!

It's a sign of the apocolypse
Pretty sure the A’s are mentioned specifically in the Bible.

Weeks.

If Weeks hits over .300 and OPS's over .800, then yes.

okay, so send him down now
ROY is locked up!
Pineda has to be the front runner here.
But I could see Hosmer getting it, if he has a good second half.
And if Pineda's arm falls off.
