Open Thread: Game 72 - San Fransomebodies at Oakland Athletics

San Francisco Giants at Oakland Athletics, Jun 18, 2011 7:05 PM PDT

Holy Cow, we actually won a game. With two more games left in the series, perhaps we can hold out hope to even the season series and present the Giants with a sweep of their own? Maybe? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

The A's send out Guillermo Moscoso against Jonathan Sanchez, and I myself cannot wait until Brandon Ross and Tyson McCarthy are back in the game. Dare I say, I am even anticipating the return of the zombie of Rich Harden! The Giants, on the other hand, are still dealing with the undead career of Barry Zito, so they have that going for them, which is nice.

Tonight, we dine in Hell, I mean, Hegenberger as the A's and Giants square Diamond off.

I think he can't be worse than willingham

but I could be wrong. I am more interested to see how Weeks perform in the lead off spot now that he seem more comfortable in the big.

Wow, that's pretty damn definitive
I actually thought it might have come this weekend, but considering that the team will activate Mark Ellis on Wednesday, that timing might make sense. It’s coming, though. Unless Barton has a monster game or two here this weekend.

I actually feel bad for Barton

He doesn’t seem to be slacking or not give a damn, and he does play with a certain intensity, which is good. Hope he gets it together in Sacto.

by coffee roaster on Jun 18, 2011 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I do too.

It really looked like he was gonna have it going last season, the guy seems to be trying. I feel bad for him, he’s a good kid, he’s just… not getting it done. :( :( I wish he would, I want him to be here.

"This must be heaven," he says.

Sure it does

The season is nearly halfway over. Do you just let him keep hitting like crap the full 162 without making a change?

it really looks like barton needs to get his head on straight

he isn’t hitting and looks like he is just pressing and it seems to be affecting his defense too. a few weeks in the minors could be exactly what he needs to finally relax and get back to what he was last year instead of just pressing in the majors. it has worked for players before and it very well could help him

hey little girl
…want a cookie?

by ChickenStanley on Jun 18, 2011 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

It's got nothing to do with learning anything

The guy has an option. Yes, he’s got one of the worst slugging percentages of anyone in the Majors with qualifying ABs.

He’s hurting the team no matter how much he walks. Sometimes it takes a change of scenery and going back down to the minors to focus specifically on getting back to what worked for him before without the added stress of it costing the A’s wins.

2010 is 2010. It’s 2011 now and just sending him out there every day while nothing’s getting better solves nothing. Now, if he goes back down to Sacramento and still isn’t getting things going, then it’s an even bigger issue.

He hasn’t done anything except for having one excellent season to earn the benefit of the doubt with this. Whatever the reasons, bad luck or otherwise, he’s been one of the worst hitters in the league by most measures, and definitely one of the worst 1B.

The only thing I didn't like about Jemile trying to stretch his double into a triple,

is that with two outs, it ended the inning. Plus, with his speed, he can walk home from 2nd on a single.

i've never tried to rank them to be honest. i guess i like beer.- stm72

I think it has more to do more with

how it reflects how weeks is playing overall then just that one play and he is ok with that

I liked it as well

Would you have had the same response if E-Patsy, or Kouz did it? I doubt that you would. You would probably be screaming that it was the wrong time to take the chance.

i've never tried to rank them to be honest. i guess i like beer.- stm72

by Tutu-late on Jun 18, 2011 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

because their mistakes outweigh the good

Weeks’ good far outweighs the bad so far. he gets some slack right now

hey little girl
…want a cookie?

by ChickenStanley on Jun 18, 2011 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Like I've said numerous times already, it all depends on the situation at the time

Kouzmanoff? He probably shouldn’t be trying to do that in the first place because he’s not a fast baserunner.

Weeks nearly had his fourth triple in a little more than a week.

Last of the Ninth - Photography

by Flashfire on Jun 18, 2011 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Isn't AN the place that says to always extend the inning?

He scores from 2nd just as easily as 3rd on a single. A follow-up fly ball ends the inning anyway. It was understandable why he did it, but it was the wrong time. You take those chances with one out, not two.

i've never tried to rank them to be honest. i guess i like beer.- stm72

by Tutu-late on Jun 18, 2011 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Stretching a single into a double? yes

That’s because he needs to get into scoring position. Stretching a double into a triple, with two outs and the ball behind you? No

by Future Ed on Jun 18, 2011 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

It's just about levels of severity to me

If he was the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, it’s horrible and he needs a strict talking-to right away.

If it’s in the first inning and nobody was on, it’s a dumb mistake.

In the 8th, stretching a lead you already have, hey – if he’s going to take the chance he’d better make it next time but they got the run, it didn’t really hurt them, and it looked like it had all the guys on the team excited.

And on the topic of walks...

Last year he had 22 multi-walk games out of his 159 played (one had 3 BB). This year he’s got 7 with a pace of about 14 or 15.

Multi-hit games? 37 last year, 12 of them being 3 hits. This year, 11 multi-hit games, one of them 3, one of them 4, on pace for about 23 total.

And one other way to look at it

Last year 32% of his multi-hit games were 3 hits. This year 18% have been for more than 2.

Seemed last year he was in a nearly season-long groove. This year it’s the complete opposite.

I’m glad that they trust Rosales in LF. I’d sure like to see Melvin get to like Rosales and get him in there at least a couple of times a week.

You might like mine...

I start with raw tuna and let most of the cooking happen in the pan. I steam the warm cheese on top right at the end, so the tuna steak is still just a little pink in the middle, but the meat flakes right off.

Now, if you can’t handle tuna and cheese together under any circumstance, then I can’t help you on that front.
