Open Thread: Game 53 - A's vs. Orioles

Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics, May 28, 2011 7:05 PM PDT

Sports_medium

The A's take on the O's again today, with Josh Outman's second MLB start since 2009. Coming off of two wins, and more importantly, coming off a few games where they actually scored more than 4 runs, could this mean that the A's offense has turned itself around? Probably not, but it makes a good story.

What else makes a good story? The A's offensive 'blow up', if you can call it that, last night after Geren was ejected with out anyone noticing his absence. Hat tip to Josh Willingham for (not) noticing that.

For those NRAF's that don't have MLBTV, today's game is the Free MLBTV Game of the day, so we have that going for us. Which is nice.

Baltimore Orioles

3B Andino
CF Jones
RF Markakis

LF Reimold

Oakland Athletics

LF Willingham
DH Matsui
C1 Suzuki

Anyways, lets get this game started.

Sweeney and LaRoche had a good game last night with the bat, so they sit tonight.

Is Jackson alive?

anyway…Let’s Go Oakland…

Since they're ALL hitting so well, it's tough to make choices!

So let’s make sure Sweeney is out and Kouz is in. Oh yeah, Ellis in too.

G_S's conversation with Fantasy Wolff

G_S: The club has lost a lot of games lately. How does this make you feel?

Wolff: Well, Blez, it makes me feel like tearing out my fingernails, and when I feel like that, I tend to do a lot of bathtub meth and stay up for days at a time scratching myself and plotting the demise of David Lee Roth.

G_S: Actually, I’m GS… And losing does suck. Hopefully the A’s win soon so you can sleep it off.

Wolff: Well, Blez, the longer I’m up the more that the satellites tell me things I don’t want to hear. However, I’ve nipped that shit in the bud. I’ve ordered shock collars for all my top staff, and once they’re installed, I don’t have to worry about my staff trying to undercut me and steal my kingdom out from under me.

G_S: That sounds a little bit paranoid. Maybe you need to take a couple of Valiums and chill it on out for a while.

Wolff: (pulls knife)

G_S: (runs away)

It's pretty crazy to think just how well Kouzmanoff hit in the minors

.332/.395/.556 14% K rate 8.5% BB rate 59 HR in ~1500 PA

And none of that was in big hitter’s parks or leagues. The BB rate was a bit lower than you’d like, and the power was more very good than outstanding, but man the guy could hit. It’s a shame that it hasn’t translated to the bigs. Obvious problem being pitch recognition.

Still think it’s important to remember going forward that the guy has been a good player the last four years. Not just okay, he’s been a good productive player. And right now he’s sitting on 1/5th of a season’s plate appearances. Yeah, he’s not fun to watch play, but he’s still by far the best option going forward on the roster. He’s a much much better player than Andy LaRoche.

good hitters have high babips

because they “hit em where they aint”

sweeney is doing some good hitting right now

by PL78 on May 28, 2011 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Whoa whoa whoa.

Good hitters have high BABIPs because they hit balls hard.

by danmerqury on May 28, 2011 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Career BABIP is .327

So there’s a 50 point adjustment you need to factor in

by Mattel on May 28, 2011 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions

How so? It cant ever really be controlled (unless you are Ichiro)

Using it to try and make a point isnt really worthwhile. Like, player A could easily have a career BABIP of .310 and then have a year where its .350 and the next year its .250. You can only predict “higher” or “lower”, and Sweeney’s is .327 so having a .387 isnt a big deal.

by PL78 on May 28, 2011 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure, but that's the point.

His true talent is ~330. Going forward, that is what we expect. It doesn’t matter that he his 375 so far.

He’s in the lineup (or not) based on his future expected performance. Not what he did yesterday.

by Mattel on May 28, 2011 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Hold on, I need to screw my head back in, because it just spun out of its socket.

What?

Hitter BABIP CAN be controlled. For pitchers not so much, but for hitters? Absolutely, to an extent. Look at the hitter leaderboards, and look at the best hitters in the league. They all have high BABIPs, because they make hard contact, which is harder to field.

And another thing…wtf? How is .387 okay because .327 is his career mark?! SIXTY points is HUGE.

by danmerqury on May 28, 2011 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions

But even if it was .327

He’d still be out best hitter….and there is my actual point.

by PL78 on May 28, 2011 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Hello, my name is futurebobgeren

And I want billy beane to consider me as a replacement manager for bob geren in the offseason. As manager of the oakland A’s i will not repeat past failures at the club. The problem with oakland is that we are not fully committed to our clubs style. Our club should be built on defense and pitching our offensive numbers are just way too high right now for me to be able to say we are fully committed to “bestmanbob-ball.” Therefore I will release coco crisp, josh willingham, matsui, and I will bring nnamdi asomugha, Derell revis, Nmanja Vidic and Ron Artest in during the offseason. I will also bat kouz third because I’m a G. On fridays I will wear a clown costume to all of the friday night home games to compete with orange fridays. I will put brian fuentes in in the ninth inning of every game regardless of the score and let him go until his arm falls off. While fuentes is on the mound I will use a megaphone to yell supportive messages to make sure every player knows where I stand on intra-team communication Dear mr. Beane let me replace bestmanbob as the manager of the a’s.

Batting behind Coco is also hurting Barton. He’s trying to do too much.

didn't Danny break it down, and it was like 4 swings more than last year (by %)?

by AgitationStation on May 28, 2011 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Then that contradicts why Geren says he needs to stay in the 2 slot

he is supposedly better at watching pitches and letting Coco run. I don’t think he is striking out any more than usual, his strikeouts last season were about even with his walks, and that was pretty much true this season last time I checked.

by kbailey3131 on May 28, 2011 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions

either way, he's struggling

hitting behind someone like Suzuki would just let him concentrate on hitting

True, but...

His approach is conducive to it. He takes a lot of pitches anyway.

by Mattel on May 28, 2011 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Is that true?

Do batters who take more pitches have a smaller disruptive runner penalty?

by danmerqury on May 28, 2011 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know

But the theory was that a steal threat on first would induce the batter to take more pitches (hittable ones that is).

by Mattel on May 28, 2011 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll buy that (not that it makes any sense on his part though)

I’d just put him down in the order because he’s just not hitting well regardless
