A's Trade Purcey For Detroit's Scott Sizemore
According to Detroit's Twitter:
Tigers have acquired LHP David Purcey from Oakland for Scott Sizemore. Tigers have recalled Danny Worth from Toledo
Forgive me for Wikipedia, but here it is:
Minor Leagues
Sizemore was drafted by the Tigers in the fifth round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft out of Virginia Commonwealth University.
On October 23, 2009, it was reported that Sizemore broke his left leg (tibia) during a collision while playing in the Arizona Fall League the previous day.
On October 27, 2009, Sizemore had surgery on his fractured left ankle including screws being place to stabilize his ankle joint. He was able to return to action in time for Spring Training in 2010.[2]
[edit] 2010 season
On April 9, 2010, Sizemore got his first major league hit (a single) against the Cleveland Indians. Detroit won the game 5-2.
On April 11, 2010, Sizemore got his first extra base hit (a double) and an RBI in the bottom of the Seventh at Comerica Park against the Cleveland Indians. Jensen Lewis was pitching.
Sizemore hit his first major league home run off Los Angeles Angels pitcher Joel Pineiro on April 30, 2010. Coming in the same inning as Brennan Boesch's first career home run, it was the first time two Tigers had hit their first career home runs in the same inning since Pop Dillon and Kid Elberfeld did it in 1901.[3]
Detroit optioned Sizemore back to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens on May 16, 2010. Sizemore's average had slumped to .206 and he was in the midst of an 0-14 streak. Detroit recalled newcomer Danny Worth from Toledo and transferred veteran Carlos Guillen to second base.[4]
Sizemore was called up again on July 21 to play third base in place of the injured Brandon Inge.[5]
[edit] 2011 season
On May 2, 2011 Sizemore was called up again to the 25 man roster, replacing second baseman Will Rhymes. In his first game back, Sizemore faced the Yankees and went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. The 4–2 win for the Tigers also snapped a seven game slide.
On May 27, 2011, Sizemore was traded to the Oakland Athletics for David Purcey.[6]
Nico will be your host tonight for the game!

Can't tell if this is a good move or bad.
Prucey was not doing badly in Oakland, and was a starting candidate if Outman or Moscoso failed.

I feel like it’s a precursor to another move.

I feel like we always say that
but that other move seems to rarely come. It seems like we have plenty of bullpen depth as well as starter depth now that Cramer is back. I think it’s a good value add for the A’s, but I’m not sure if it’s a great fit with Rosales coming back, Ellis returning to non-awfulness and Weeks waiting in the wings for 2012. I’d also like the move a lot more if Sizemore had more than 12 professional games at 3rd base. Tempers my confidence in this signaling the end of the Andy LaRoche era.
I think this may have just been a case of Beane/Forst saying “Sizemore > Purcey and has an option, so why the hell not?”
Interesting complications
I cannot help but think this is, as IAAISR said, a precursor. The A’s need pitching depth right now, just as much as they need offense. This trade sends away pitching depth for someone who is not good at offense, and plays a position that, in the minors we have a lot of, though in the majors, we have a lot of suck at.
This could mean a few things. It could mean we are flipping Sizemore. It could mean we are flipping one or more of our minor league infielders. It could mean that we are calling up Weeks to the Majors and Sizemore is his AAA replacement. It could mean we are trading Ellis or Kouzmanoff. It could mean that we are DFAing LaRoche soon and Sizemore will take his place. It could mean that Kouz will be on the DL and Sizemore will take his place, or that LaRoche AND Kouz will be gone and Sizemore and Rosales are going to be on the big league club.
