I do not understand.

Why do these “people” (I think some of these questions must be planted by the CSN staff) send questions to Glen and Ray, like this one asking about Matsui-related promotions, that they could answer for themselves with a 15-second Google search? They don’t even know if their questions will be chosen for the broadcast. And what if they’re not watching when the questions are answered? Just so many problems with that whole concept. So. Many.

It’s a “no win” quandry to have your SP go 4.2 IP while your closer is on the DL and two of your relievers got a late start to spring training and shouldn’t really be in high leverage situations.

Our bullpen has been overrated all offseason. Even with health they are simply not as sure a thing as so many think.

by supersugarCrisp on Apr 1, 2011 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely.

In particular, Bailey, Balfour, and Fuentes have been terrible.

Bailey injury prone

Balfour good, but really that good?
Fuentes only really good vs lefties.
The rest injured or coming off injuries and even then, not proven over time.

by supersugarCrisp on Apr 1, 2011 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

Our pen looks awful at the moment. I did not like it before the game started and Bringing in Blevins and Breslow confirmed it.

I am sure they will be fine but right now I think you could trust one of the whole pen and I am not sure which one.

by Trainman on Apr 1, 2011 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions

But Nico

That’s part of my reasoning, that Bailey is injury prone and hurt again, with serious sounding issues in his arm.

That and Fuentes lacking ability to pitch to righties and lefties. And Balfour has been good lately, but is honestly something of a journeyman, not so far removed from being in the minors.

I just think it’s overrated. We’ll see. Hope i’m wrong.

We can accept losing to Felix. Get the errors and bad relief out of the way in a game we shouldn’t feel bad losing anyway.

Dang it, as soon as i try being positive in the face of such ugliness, now Zooks may be hurt.

But it’s hard to second-guess a manager when there’s 13 bullpen outs to get and so many guys aren’t good options at the moment.

by Nico on Apr 1, 2011 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, what do you have the long reliever there for then?

If the starter can’t get through 5 innings and you just burn through the middle of the bullpen because you don’t want to use someone like Balfour too soon, then you run the risk of leaving another guy out there. Now the game turned into a laugher (as much because of bad defense as anything else) and Cramer’s in the game after all, which he’s probably going to finish now at this point.

Last of the Ninth - Photography

by Flashfire on Apr 1, 2011 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

You have to do one of two things:

Roll the dice with your long reliever, straight up, hoping to get one good performance out of one guy instead of trying to get good performances from a bunch of guys, or bypass the long-reliever because he’s your worst pitcher and try to mix and match for several innings.

Cramer is bad enough that I think Geren made the right choice in a game the A’s led.

I wouldn't say Cramer is "bad enough"

But I can see why you wouldn’t want to have him be the guy you’re counting on to keep a 2-1 lead in the middle of the game.

Still, if that means you go to people like Blevins and a probably-not-quite-there-yet Breslow...

Right, no matter what you need a pitcher

who you don’t want in there, in there, be it Cramer or Breslow or Wuertz. That’s why it’s a “no win” for Geren.

You're basically gambling that 5 or more pitchers

are going to keep a one run lead. That’s a bad gamble. I’m not overly critical of the move one way or the other, but even with a 1 run lead, the better move is to give it to your long guy and pray. If he gets you into the 7th, then you can switch gears again.

by A's Believer on Apr 1, 2011 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

You're mistaking a good long man for good middle relief

We have pretty good middle relief this year. Middle relief is basically anyone not a setup man, closer or starter. and even then, you can sometimes consider a setup man middle relief.

by DMOAS on Apr 1, 2011 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

for the sake of brevity

I used “middle relief” to refer to anybody who pitches in the middle, i.e. between the starter and the closer. Instead of saying “middle relief, set-up man, reliever against lefties”, “reliever against righties”, etc. etc. All of those positions are places where teams tend to dump their worst pitchers, which is why, surprise surprise, they suck. And as a result they lose ballgames. Many of them.

In this game, Cramer was put in a middle role (to coin a phrase, since you don’t like my broad use of “middle relief”) because he wasn’t good enough to make starter. But the other non-closers/non-starters are also basically there because they aren’t good enough to be closers or starters, instead of being among our best pitchers who are chosen, prized, and treated as stars for their importance in middle roles.

by A's Believer on Apr 1, 2011 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

notice BTW

that middle roles are often treated as interchangeable. e.g. today Cramer was “middle relief” instead of “long man”. His next game may well be as “long man.” So “middle relief” is not in practice terribly distinct from the other middle roles.

Basically, he is just being treated as a pitcher who isn’t good enough to be a starter or closer. And that’s why surprise surprise he (and many other middle role pitchers) lose games. Many games.

by A's Believer on Apr 1, 2011 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not even complaining so much about using Blevins and Breslow when he did...

…as much as I’m complaining about Breslow being brought back out for the 7th.

Last of the Ninth - Photography

by Flashfire on Apr 1, 2011 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but once you've decided to go with short relievers,

and Breslow is in the game, you tend to try to squeeze what you can from each pitcher.

I agree it’s the most questionable of all the decisions, but I don’t blame the manager for making a possibly questionable move instead of another one that could be equally problematic, which is all his other options at that moment.

If it's the 2nd or 3rd inning, yes.

But every single reliever is rested, and if effective the A’s had the guys lined up: Blevins, Breslow/Wuertz, Ziggy for the middle innings, then Balfour and Fuentes. Better odds than asking Cramer to go 3 innings with a one-run lead.

Given how poorly Cramer's looked recently, bringing him in in a close game (remember the A's were up by a run when Cahill left)

is likely to not be a good move either. At the very least, many here would be vehemently opposed to it. I don’t actually remember anyone advocating Cramer back then.

What a coincidence

I am mellow during ST and the season starts and I get pissed off.

1) kouz needs to be clubbed for every error he made causing Cahill who was going to leave early anyway to leave even earlier

2) Geren bringing in two Lefties who showed how inept they currently are. Should have brought in Cramer instead of bringing in two players you know are going to fail. I like Breslow but he is not ready to pitch in these situations due to missing a good part of ST
And I do not like Blevins period. When Bailey comes back he needs to gol

3) Idiots who cannot field

On the bright side, it is only one game.

Actually, I think so much venom and negativity in these threads might be a good sign...

…because I think it shows that expectations are much higher around here for the ‘11 A’s than we’ve seen in the last few years. When your team sucks and you lose, it doesn’t hurt as much. When you expect more from your team and they lay an egg, it is agonizing, and we are experiencing that right now. Think of it this way—Boston has a very strong team this year, and they looked awful today. It’s just one day in a long season…a great rotation will keep us in games all year, and we’ll win our share…

Beane, get an offensive coordinator

so maybe you too could draft a Belt, or someone even close to that.

Beane doesn’t deserve much of the ripping he gets (much due to misunderstanding of Moneyball,) but he does indeed deserve ripping for his incredibly long run of failing to come up with difference making offensive players.

by supersugarCrisp on Apr 1, 2011 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

30 teams passed on Belt 4, 5 times until he was finally drafted.

by lenscrafters on Apr 1, 2011 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't look at it so specifically

Yes, all teams hit and miss.

But Beane has consistently missed for a decade. He needs to let someone else make offensive decisions, stick to pitching, which he’s great at.

fire geren

and while you’re at it… pull down that damn tarp from the 3rd deck. could have had a bigger crowd tonight, but lew and the clowns at Mlb want to make attendance look bad

by coachmmm on Apr 1, 2011 10:03 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, well

It’s better to have a capacity of 50k to spread out 15k amid three decks instead of two.

yes.

plus more people would be higher, since it’s cheaper. thus, when they the park on foul balls and such, it will look more empty.

but really, it’s about the cost to staff the third deck.

Oh, great

It’s bad enough with the fake-ass enthusiasm of Henry Wofford on Warriors broadcasts, but he’s doing A’s games too?

It would be near impossible to have a game like this tomorrow right?

I expect a win tomorrow.

Hopefully they have the error syndrome out of their system for tomorrow and we do not need to see this crap relief again. I think Harden will be a great asset to the pen if he can get and stay healthy. When he comes back along with Bailey we can rid the garbage that is currently in the pen (Blevins)

Brett needs to go 7 good inings and our offense put a 6 pack up at least.

I won’t know whether to be horrified or impressed.

do you remember when we used to draw over 50 during the 2000s for games with Yanks and giants

there’s nothing wrong with that. Tonight could have drawn more. how about having a fan fest to create enthusiasm and sell tickets?

by coachmmm on Apr 1, 2011 10:14 PM PDT reply actions

You're preaching to the choir

But they’ve already made the decision that they’re not taking down tarps and putting them up to change capacity just because a team coming into town might sell more tickets than another.

Last of the Ninth - Photography

by Flashfire on Apr 1, 2011 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

And that's not reality

Whether capacity is 50k or 35k they struggle to average 20k. A few games where they get more than 35k doesn’t alter that significantly.

by Flashfire on Apr 1, 2011 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe.

I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but I see two possibilities here:

1. The cost of removing and then replacing the tarps from series to series is so high that the potential extra ticket sales don’t make up for it.

2. It’s a conspiracy to depress ticket sales.

Ok, maybe you’re right.

by IowaA'sFan on Apr 1, 2011 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

As it is, some people complained about not being able to sit in the upper deck at all

So they opened up three sections behind the plate. At first they were set up as a more expensive all-you-can eat deal, now they’re set up as the least expensive area with money built in for concessions.

That’s good enough for now. There’s little reason to have all of the upper deck open and staffed when most of those sections would only have a dozen people or so in them.

Call it an excuse if you want, but I have no problem with the tarps.

But hell, I live in Iowa, what the hell do I know?

by IowaA'sFan on Apr 1, 2011 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions

It was more just a general response as part of the conversation

The idea of removing the tarps for big attendance games has been discussed considerably, both pro and con.

by Flashfire on Apr 1, 2011 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep, I'm aware.

All I’m saying is if the A’s have an opportunity to more sell tickets, let’s sell ’em!

But whatever. I’m sure the ownership knows more than me. And actually, I kinda like the tarps. They look good. Better than empty seats, anyway.

Anyone got a link to CT stream?

"Carter's 25-game hitting streak isn't any normal streak. He's 46 for 97 (.474 average) during the run, adding 16 walks and compiling 81 total bases in the process. I'm out of superlatives for what he's doing." - Kevin Goldstein

Sounds like it's not going to be available online at this point

The only course of action may be to pressure the station to change that, but I’ve seen two conflicting reports on this.
