Fireworks Playlist Idea
I have an idea for a fireworks game music playlist of all East Bay artists.
I have presented my idea to the A’s Special Events Department and they seem interested, but they are unsure whether they would use my idea this season or next. With all the attention on the Giants this year, I think this is truly the time to present some of the awesome music from our side of the Bay, and I need your help.
If you love this idea – and I hope you do – comment on why below. I’ll include your comments with the hopes that AN’s enthusiasm will sway the A’s special events team to do this theme this year!
My list so far includes:
Sly and the Family Stone (open the show with "Dance To the Music"?)
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Tower of Power ("East Bay Grease"?)
The Edwin Hawkins Singers ("Oh Happy Day," of course!)
The Pointer Sisters
MC Hammer
Green Day
Counting Crows
Eddie Money
Lydia Pense and Cold Blood
Joe Satriani
Greg Kihn
I know there are many others, and I haven’t even delved into the rap genre because (a) I don’t know it well, and (b) this will need to be a family-friendly playlist, of course. (I know there is lots of rap/hip-hop that is appropriate; I just don’t know the songs.) I’m imagining a list of songs that the greatest number of people will be familiar with. And, since I am of (ahem) a certain age, my list tends toward ‘60s/’70s artists. So, awesome AN music lovers, let’s hear your suggestions. I will submit an updated list to my contact person with your ideas, and maybe we can get this done!

I don't know that I'd call them "family-friendly"...
but I’m pretty sure Digital Underground had at least a couple radio-safe singles while representing their brand of goofy East Bay hip-hop.
But the Humpty Dance video with all the guys in A's gear is much better!
Though definitely not “fireworks friendly.”
Losing this team would be a huge failure for this city and an affront to Oakland’s great sports legacy.

A couple more, offhand
Rogue Wave (Oakland)
The Rubinoos (great power pop veterans from Berkeley)
There is an evening coming in/Across the fields, one never seen before,/That lights no lamps. -- Philip Larkin, from "Going"
Do they count?
From Wikipedia: Although Metallica had initially formed in Los Angeles, it wasn’t until their February 1983 relocation to the East Bay area that Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett joined as bassist and lead guitarist, sealing the band’s first, formative line-up.

to be honest. you coulda said name the best country bands from the bay area and i was gonna throw in metallica.
the artist formerly known as inbillywetrust
And you'd be Unforgiven II.

Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow
I am fairly certain the East Bay can claim these guys.
And for tailgating before the fireworks:
The Coup – “Me and Jesus the Pimp in a ’79 Granada Last Night”
High On Fire “Ghost Neck”
Why? – “Afterschool America”
Again from Wikipedia: How far does "Bay Area" extend?
Blackalicious is an American hip hop duo from Sacramento, California….
Losing this team would be a huge failure for this city and an affront to Oakland’s great sports legacy.
I may not be from these parts, but even I would not claim Sac as the Bay Area
Nonetheless, I understood Blackalicious, along with many of their Quannum Records brethren, have claimed Oakland/Berkeley as home. Maybe.
They are an Oakland group.
Chief Xcel went to UC Davis and then immediately relocated to the Bay after graduation.

For hip hop
Don’t Lose Your Head-Zion I & Too $hort (both from oakland)
E-40-Tell me When to Go (He’s from vallejo)
Another really popular San Jose band that’s getting more and more attention is The Holdup. They’re like alternative/reggae almost.
Lew Wolff would vote for The Holdup.
Losing this team would be a huge failure for this city and an affront to Oakland’s great sports legacy.
Petaluma?

Gotta love it.
Through his childhood, Shimura lived in Tokyo, Japan, Salt Lake City, Utah,2 and Berkeley, California.3 He is the son of Japanese author, Takao Shimura, and an Italian/Jewish-American union organizer, Charlotte Arzio-Shimura. Shimura’s parents were divorced by age 2, at which point he moved with his mother from Tokyo to Salt Lake City, Utah, and then finally to Berkeley California.

En Vogue, for the love of God
I think you could take the KMEL playlist from about 1989-1993 and do a whole East Bay show from that.
Mac Dre, Keak da Sneak, E-40
You guys are giving me quite an education — thanks!

If I could turn this green all by myself I would.

Just because I don’t necessarily like a band doesn’t mean they’re not a good band.

The Grouch & Eligh
are from Oakland, but I have a feeling kit too many people are going to know who they are.

Are you kidding...of course I know their work.
The Grouch & Eligh are two of the best bluegrass banjo players I’ve ever heard.
But seriously, folks....
bluegrass banjo might not be the best fireworks music.

I think Banjo Man should wear a hybrid costume,
made out of A’s, Giants, Raiders, 49ers, Warriors, and maybe even some college gear.
It would be more honest and representative of himself as a Bay Area icon, rather than trying to pass as a partisan.

Berkeley High alums Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer sing songs on tv
Oh wait, most of their stuff isn’t family friendly……
There's no crying in baseball!
Thanks.
Hard to believe they’ve never done it before.

is from Oakland. So is Too $hort, although good luck finding a usable track the whole family can dig.

Rec'd just for your name alone!

Sheila E and Pete Escovedo
The Escovedos are from Oakland and it would be great to hear some Latin vibe to fireworks. Sheila E’s songs from the Prince days are pretty popular and fun!

Reply fail...
meant to say that the Escovedos were on my original suggestion list.

I’m surprised no-one’s got love for TWDY ’Player’s Holiday’
Family friendly, cheerful groove.

Slightly more realistically, has anyone noticed that East Bay Ray gets recognized on the big screen all the time for attending games?
Seems like he has season tickets or something. I guess it’s unlikely that the A’s could find a palatable Dead Kennedys song, but maybe!
"Moon Over Marin" is a pretty catchy tune
The lyrics are grim, but in a cheerful sort of way. How about “Jock-o-Rama” for the irony? I have some very strong opinions on the DK “reunion”, but if EBR is an A’s fan, maybe I should cut him a little bit of slack…

I'm pretty sure Bill Neukom
considers Sacramento, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Petaluma etc San Francisco neighborhoods. In order to use songs from anywhere but a block around the coliseum we’ll have to wait for the findings of a blue ribbon panel consisting of the Pope, Selena Gomez, Charles Barkley, and Michael Lewis. Should be any day now.
by GreggC on Mar 9, 2011 5:33 AM PST via mobile reply actions
F that.
Add some Sacramento and SF bands to the list, and we can get rid of absolute shite like
Counting Crows, Joe Satriani, and Tower Of Power,
and replace them with Cake, Be Brave Bold Robot, The Residents, and The Dead Kennedys.

McCrea's an ass, but they've got their own unique sound.
“Comfort Eagle” or “Short Skirt, Long Jacket” would be perfect for a fireworks display.

If we're gonna do cast our nets wider to S.F. (and Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto), then
American Music Club, Tarnation, Creeper Lagoon, Wooden Shjips, Red House Painters, DJ QBert, Pavement (way overrated), Grandaddy, DJ Shadow, . . .
There is an evening coming in/Across the fields, one never seen before,/That lights no lamps. -- Philip Larkin, from "Going"
DJ Shadow! Red House Painters! Granddaddy!
And even though Pavement is overrated, “Cut Your Hair” or “Jackals, False Grails, The Lonesome Era” would be awesome for a fireworks show.

and Sister Crayon or Agent Ribbons,
but they’re probably not famous enough yet…

The Joe Sharino Band
Non-stat guy: "Yeah, whatever. You’re wrong." Stat guy: "No, you’re wrong." Non-stat guy: "Cool. Pass me a beer." Stat guy: "Here you go." Sigh, if only it was this easy.
You KNOW I like this idea
Maybe you could send a list with clips of each song you suggest…to refresh their memory.
Actually, you should post that list/links right here. And people could add to it.

Some of these are good, some are not
One thing to improve all fireworks shows – no more LIGHTS.
1. Journey is from SF.
and
2. JOURNEY SUCKS.
Now there's nothing left to say, so let's go drink beer.
Aw, I love that song.
Everytime I hear it, I immediately close my eyes and think of A’s fireworks shows. Yes, this becomes a problem when driving down the freeway, but I still like it. :)
There's no crying in baseball!
I specifically want to eliminate any bands associated with San Francisco
Let them have the Dead, the Airplane, Santana, Janis Joplin, etc. We have our own great music on this side of the bay, which is the point of my request.
I do love “Lights” just for the tradition, though. Might have to rethink that.
Losing this team would be a huge failure for this city and an affront to Oakland’s great sports legacy.
Please, no Journey!
They’re a horrible band, and from what I can see, Giants fans.
There is an evening coming in/Across the fields, one never seen before,/That lights no lamps. -- Philip Larkin, from "Going"
I actually doubt we will ever be able to pry "Lights" from them.

Steve Perry is from Visalia
Not sure if that helps.

Actually, I think he's from Hanford.

I have a soft spot for that band.
A girlfriend from high school loved them. Good music to get your heart ripped from your chest and handed to you while it’s still beating. Almost thirty years ago, but I can still clearly remember the emotional context. My God, how I learned to hate that bitch! Every now and again, I smile about it and wonder whatever became of her. I like to think she put on 300 pounds and married somone who kicked her ass on a weekly basis.
"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat."--The Boys of Summer
I remember when they did a concert at Radcliff stadium in Fresno to help rebuild the facility for City College.
Steve’s mom worked with Valley Children’s Hospital at the time, and they donated their entire $50,000 fee to the hospital. A class act all the way around.
Non-stat guy: "Yeah, whatever. You’re wrong." Stat guy: "No, you’re wrong." Non-stat guy: "Cool. Pass me a beer." Stat guy: "Here you go." Sigh, if only it was this easy.
Inclusion - I say Sacramento yes, Stockton yes
not because they are actually Bay Area, but because we have teams there. Skigurl, this is a great idea.
Flipsyde
I think they have some pretty good firework type songs too.
