DLD: 3/8 - Keith Law watches an A's game

I didn't think this article alone was worthy of a FanPost, and I don't think there are enough DLDs, so I'll combine the two.

Keith Law (subscription required) had this to say about a few of the A's he watched:

Joey Devine hasn't appeared in a big league game since the end of 2008, missing two years due to Tommy John surgery, and his appearance on Monday made it look like he's a long way from getting back.

DLS - I do think he has promise as a reliever, but he could easily be Jesus Colome, tantalizing with plus stuff but never commanding it enough to be an elite closer or setup guy.

Grant Green - Shortstop can't be his long-term position, and I'd really like to see him in centerfield where his speed will play up while his inadequacies in the infield won't be such a problem.

I didn't copy and paste much of what he wrote, so I hope I'm not breaking any rules.

Peter Gammons thinks Michael Choice is going to be a monster.

This is from a week ago, but Tollefson was outrighted to AAA.  I guess that means Pennington will be back.

Duchscherer will be starting for the Orioles today.

Dump away!

I was disappointed that Keith Law is now on the Baseball Today podcast.

I find his work dull and he takes himself very seriously and he and Karabell see the game the same way which doesn’t make for a good show.

But seriously, folks....

good, I'm not the only one who laments his addition

Seth really grew on me, because he and Karabell always argued. I think I’d rather have Pod Vader as the co-host than Law.

You need two guys who see the game differently for the show to work. Maybe Law will surprise me and lighten up but I don’t feel real hopeful about it.

Crazy Mother-in-Law Stories?

I’m a longtime lurker and occasional poster, but thought I might create a new user name to get a little bit of anonymity just in case…

So I’ve got a crazy mom, and so my fiancee is looking at a pretty dire MIL situation. Now, I’m sure everyone thinks their mom/MIL is crazy, but I’ve always felt that mine was a special kind of crazy. It’s gotten to the point where it dominates a lot of our conversations with our friends, so I started a quick and dirty blog about it so that our friends can catch up on it without us having to repeat the stories ad naseum.
The fiancee’s in a bit of a moral quandry here, though – since I post some of the exact emails that my mom has sent (albeit redacted, again for anonymity). I just wanted to poll the community to get your opinion if I’m just being plain mean and that we’re heading down a path where our families will be irreparably hurt/angry? (and keep in mind, my mom is plenty mean herself in all that craziness)
I don’t want to seem like I’m self-promoting, so I won’t post a link unless I’m asked…

by crazymil on Mar 8, 2011 9:47 AM PST reply actions

I wouldn't do it myself

but I’m lucky I guess my Mom isn’t crazy.

But seriously, folks....

by B.E.D. on Mar 8, 2011 9:51 AM PST up reply actions

in my defense...

The stories are so far out there that they’re ridiculously funny.

by crazymil on Mar 8, 2011 9:53 AM PST up reply actions

the "telling funny stories to your friends / hurting your wife and extended family" ratio seems off

I don’t really see the upside aside from a few jokes, and the downside is that you make your wife choose between you and her mother…

Step lightly

I know someone who put together a one man show about his dad (levels of craziness that just HAVE to match your mom) – it was gripping and emotional in parts, but incredibly hurtful to his mom, uncle, and some siblings – they just didn’t see the need for all of this to be part of a comedy act (dad is deceased). Therapeutic for him, but also selfish to do his therapy in public. He’s now blogging about raising his kids – funny stuff, but I also wonder whether they are going to love their early lives being part of the historical record?

That's what I was thinking

Plus – I do actually redact the emails and the names/places so it remains in relative anonymity. I suppose if you really wanted to be a detective, you could figure out who I was (and thus, the crazy mom/MIL). I guess immediate family would know who I was also, and so far we’ve been trying not to tell my fiancee’s family exactly how crazy my mother is.
But I suppose I got a universally negative response that was shared with my fiancee, so for the time being, I’ve made it require user registration to view anything while we discuss it.

The point of the article is to show you a different way to represent data.

You can change the settings to see different things. Size of circle and colors to represent wins, payroll, league, etc. Did you get a chance to play with it?

What is important is that you aren’t looking at a spreadsheet or a static graph. You’re watching how the teams change throughout the decade. Literally watching them change with one click.

by LoneStranger on Mar 8, 2011 11:19 AM PST up reply actions

I did play with it, guess it's just not meant for me

I think might be interesting to present other data in this fashion, RS/RA isn’t doing it for me. I already knew the A’s progress over the decade and that the Kansas City dot was never going to change color and the Rockies were going to be in the top right.

Rick Peterson on KNBR this morning

He is now working with Bloomberg sports and while talking about Lincicum he mentioned a stat that was relevant to AN’s discussions on Trevor Cahill.

Rick Peterson said that the leage average BABIP on pitches that are thrown low in the zone is just .220

He mentioned that Lincicum’s BABIP on balls he throws down in the zone is just .190 (I think). He believed some of Timmys struggles last year may have been Tim simply not hitting his spots low in the zone.

However, knowing that the league average BABIP is different depending on what spots a pitcher is able to consistantly hit, means that maybe Cahill can sustain a below average BABIP by keeping the ball down.

A lot of vitual ink has been spilt on this site regarding whether Cahill more “lucky” than “good.” And has attempted to define what might make Cahill different and hopefully able to sustain last years sucess.

Apparently Bloomberg is tracking pitch locations in ways that some of the metrics referenced on this site do not typically track.

Until Trevor show’s me otherwise I will continue to believe that he will continue to perform among the best pitchers in baseball. While everyone tries to figure out what he’s doing.

by Oaktown Shutout on Mar 9, 2011 9:12 AM PST reply actions

I wasn't sure where best to include this post

but figured this might interest other ANers, and DLD is always safe

Also, maybe I should mention, I’m a long time lurker at this site and have enjoyed the discussions which have helped me appreciate my A’s in new ways. This site has introduced me to sabremetrics, which addmittedly I’m just beginning to understand.

by Oaktown Shutout on Mar 9, 2011 9:18 AM PST up reply actions

I'm not sure how much that helps with prediction

I certainly would not be surprised that the BABIP was lower on balls down in the zone, but when trying to predict how Cahill will perform in the future, we need to know if he actually has an intrinsic skill at keeping the ball down in the zone, and whether it is repeatable. I’m mostly a hopeful agnostic on the Cahill issue, but I think in order to prove that he is an exception to the “rules” predicting pitcher success, I’m going to need a lot more than one season’s worth of data.

by el generico on Mar 9, 2011 9:30 AM PST up reply actions

I also would love to see data regarding how many pitches Cahill throws low in the zone

especially comparred to the league average. If he is well below the average then I would say that maybe we’ve located an intrinsic skill that he at least has some hopes at repeating.

Obviously for any player who has only spent 1 full year in the bigs, we always want more data before predicting future success. However the same could be said of Gio or Brett. But many here expect Brett and Gio to be good because of thier FIP over 1+ year and are sceptical on Cahill given roughly the same amount of data (despite having arguably better success), for the reason that they value Ks as a better predicter

by Oaktown Shutout on Mar 9, 2011 9:53 AM PST up reply actions

but there was nothing outlier about brett's or gio's performances last year. even cahill's supporters expect him to regress because no sinkerball pitcher produces the kind of results that he did.

i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, cahill is either a once in a generation talent or he got lucky last year (and that his real perf is closer to a 3.50-3.80 era pitcher). i’ll bet on the latter because betting on the former is just plain silly

by stm72 on Mar 9, 2011 10:04 AM PST up reply actions

I'm very familier with and enjoyed both Nico and DFAs posts about Cahill

as a result of their posts and the conversation within the posts I will be watching Cahill even more closely this year.

However, and I may be mistaken, but from these conversations, I was under the impression that BABIP = luck.

Meaning that if the ball is put in play the result is more or less random. And that with few exceptions most pitchers have equal BABIP.

I also assumed that some hitters, by being great hitters may be able to increase thier BABIP by hitting the ball harder or staying in the middle of the field, ect.

Peterson’s comment helped change my view of BABIP from a pitchers standpoint. His exact quote was that “Over the past decade the league batting average on balls put in play on pitches that were thrown low in the zone is .220”

So for me this means that by having exceptional control a pitcher could lower thier BABIP as well.

Or in sum: BABIP does not always equal luck

by Oaktown Shutout on Mar 9, 2011 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

that hitters do better when the ball is up is not exactly news.

most pitchers do not have similar babips. pitching styles have similar babips. flyball pitchers are better able to sustain lower babips, groundball pitchers tend to have higher babips.

hitters have more control of babip than do pitchers.

i’ll repeat what i said earlier. his pitching style (meaning other superior groundball pitchers do not sustain similarly low babips). derek lowe had one season very similar to the year that cahill did. he never did it again.

I do wonder what other data pitching coaches are looking at

But up and down in the zone contact is splitting the samples pretty small.

Well

He’s primarly a sinker/change pitchers I believe, so wouldn’t it make sense that he keeps the ball down more than a pitcher with a more power-oriented repertoire?

I am going to post this in the DLD because I need to vent...

If I go out of the way to book a band to do them a favor, they should not email me the day of the show to tell me that they have to play first because they have to leave right afterwards. I hate bands that just want to play and not stick around to watch the other bands.

Also, I booked them as an acoustic duo, and they called me thee night before to tell me they’re a 5 piece, and they need monitors, and they absolutely can’t play without monitors.
I barely cobbled together a passable PA. I don’t have any f’n monitors. We sing through a bass amp at my practice space.

I mean, it’s a garage rock show at a pizza place, and these cats are acting like they’re ELP or Jethro Tull or something.

I’m thinking about kicking this band off the bill on general principles. Of course I blame Pam, also on general principles, but complaining isn’t going to get the job done.

Should I accomodate them, or kick them to the curb?

I gave them a hard in and an easy out.

They’re NOT playing first, period.

If they have a short set and the minimal setup we had talked about, they can play second, but they have to be offstage by 9:30 so we can go on at 9:45.

They’re thinking about it. I hope they withdraw. The house is already going to be packed without them anyway.

Chris Pratt (aka Hatty!) talks 'Moneyball'

(and all his other projects)

So you go from Disgusting Donald to costarring with Brad Pitt in September’s Moneyball. How exciting was that?
By far the most intense acting experience I’ve ever had. It was like three months of really hardcore training. I lost a ton of weight. It’s a baseball movie. And I’m based off a real character, named Scott Hatteberg. It was the first time I’ve ever stretched my dramatic wings. So I think that I’m looking forward to seeing it. It was a great experience.

How did you get involved in that, seeing as you’re mostly a comedic actor?
I auditioned for it and then they said, you did fine but we think you’re too heavy for the role. So, unsolicited, I was like okay, then I’ll lose weight for the role.

You pulled a Christian Bale?
I did. I lost like 40 pounds. Finally after maybe three months of working out and dieting really hard I sent them a picture of the weight I lost and what I looked like, and they gave me the role. I really went out and earned it.

What kind of diet did you put yourself on?
I did a really strict, no alcohol, no sugar, no salt, no carbs, just all protein and fresh vegetables, small meals over the course of the day. It was awful.

I think Ray Fosse may have had a hand in developing one of these interview questions.

Enh,

it might very well be a decent book, just some publisher trying to cash in on the Moneyball hoopla by saying stupid things in a press release. Wouldn’t be the first time a publisher built up sensationalist straw men to make a book seem more controversial.

I would not blame the authors for anything without seeing the actual book. It’s possible they’re just as horrified.
