A's Announce Final Roster

With the transactions that were made today, the A's roster is set for opening day.

Release

The Oakland A's optioned right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross, catcher Josh Donaldson and infielder Eric Sogard to Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced today. The A's also selected the contract of infielder Andy LaRoche from Sacramento. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for LaRoche, the A's placed infielder Adam Rosales on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 22 with a fractured right foot. The A's also placed right-handed pitchers Andrew Bailey and Rich Harden on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 22. Bailey has a strained right forearm and Harden has a strained right shoulder. The A's reassigned their remaining two non-roster invitees -- infielder Wes Timmons and outfielder Matt Carson -- to their minor league camp.

Star-divide

The 25-man Roster:

SP:  Cahill, Gonzalez, Anderson, Braden and McCarthy

Pen: Fuentes, Balfour, Breslow, Wuertz, Ziegler, Blevins and Cramer

C: Suzuki and Powell

IF: Barton, Ellis, Kouzmanoff, Pennington and LaRoche

OF: Willingham, Crisp, DeJesus, Sweeney and Jackson

DH: Matsui

No nasty surprises, unlike last year.

Nice to see the starting lineup and rotation make it through spring unscathed. Bring on Friday!

I agree with all the picks/cuts.

Ross is a future starter and should be treated as such. With the depth in the pen, better to use Cramer as a long-man/6th while Ross continues to develop with regular starts in AAA. Letting Ross rot in the pen last year might have hurt his development. This way you can use him as a very good 5th next year or a trade chip later in the year if needed.

Also, as we’ve seen this series, the A’s offense has gone from worst in baseball to barely passable (still a huge improvement). LaRoche’s bat is still desperately needed and his defense is passable enough to make him the better choice over Sogard. It might put a bit more ware on Penny, but if it becomes a problem you can always move McCarthy down for a week and call Sogard up. Green will be the starting SS in a year and a half anyway.

no mention of Jai Miller...

I’m assuming he was optioned to Sac? I kind of liked having a speedy pinch runner off the bench in Miller..seems more useful than CoJack.

He was already sent down a week or so ago

When watching LaRoche anybody else....

kinda shocked that he didn’t hit in Pittsburgh? Setting aside the numbers, he’s got a good swing, he knows how to work a count, and his pop is fairly evident. Really curious whether this is adjustments or if he’s just fired up or what. He looks good.

by AgitationStation on Mar 30, 2011 6:33 PM PDT reply actions

I was totally surprised

I don’t think he has actually had as much of an opportunity as he could have. He only had one season with more than 300 PA’s. That kind of shocked me. Just from hearing his name I felt like he had 3 full Major League seasons worth of plate appearances, but he really hasn’t.

by jeffro on Mar 30, 2011 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

He had a .234 BABIP last year

That might explain his crummy BA last year.

by PL78 on Mar 31, 2011 5:00 AM PDT up reply actions

I recall listening to a Pirates radio broadcast

last season and the announcer said that LaRoche wasn’t even hitting the ball hard in batting practice. He had that wrist injury and I don’t know if hasn’t gotten to 100% until now or what the story is, but he is definitely hitting the ball hard now. I love the fact that he can play solid defense because if Kouz struggles or if Ellis gets hurt and/or leaves after 2011, LaRoche could turn into a very valueable player. An .800 OPS and average+ defense out of either position would go a long way for this team.

Interesting to me.

The 4-lefty/3-righty bullpen with the 3-lefty/2-righty starting five will make this a very southpaw-leaning pitching staff. I guess it isn’t that big of a deal, especially in the bullpen since Breslow seems to be pretty good against both side batters and Cramer won’t likely get that many innings. I’d imagine that this formation is pretty temporary…once Bailey is back, I imagine Cramer would head back to Sacramento and when/if Harden gets thrown into the mix, I’d think that Blevins would be one to go – since he still has an option left.

As for LaRoche: I’d find this move pretty surprising. He’s probably no better or worse defensively at short than Sogard, but probably offers a better bench bat. However, I thought it might have been good to really get him back to his old self at the plate by getting regular at-bats at Sac and then calling him up later before he had the chance to opt-out of his contract on June 1, rather than have him get maybe 4-5 at-bats a week in the majors.

But, I can think of two reasons perhaps why he was brought on-board now:
1) The A’s might have a pretty quick leash with Kouzmanoff at 3rd. There’s no denying that Kouz has declined with the bat every year he’s been in the league. He’s seen a steady decline in virtually every rate-stat…his fielding reached elite levels last season, but he’s fast approaching 30 and started having back problems late last season. He’s also not very versatile and hasn’t ever done much offensively beyond hit the occasional homer, even in his best offensive seasons. He’s also fairly expensive and will likely earn 6+ million in his final year of arb next season. The A’s may see LaRoche as a younger, healthier, cheaper alternative to Kouz with a little worse glove but more offensive potential and a bit more versatile, both in the short and medium terms.

2) The team is really concerned about Rosales bouncing back from his foot injury. To make room for LaRoche, Rosales was transferred to the 60-day DL. I didn’t see a note about whether the DL-move was retroactive at all, but in any case that early-May return for Rosales doesn’t really seem realistic at this point. It seems like with Pennington virtually limited to only hitting effectively from the left side, the team wanted to keep a right-handed bat on the bench in the infield, rather than go with Sogard. The team might also be preparing to see just how much LaRoche can do in case Rosales doesn’t recover to his old form until later in the summer.

I’m not at all gonna read into his spring, but if he can show adequate defense and some of the bat he had prior, he could be a great guy to have…

Kouz hasn't "decline with the bat every year"

His 2008 and 2009 seasons were virtually identical. The best guess is that he played a bit above his true talent level in 2007 and a bit below in 2010. There’s no real trend in his performance—more like normal fluctuation around an established level. He should lose ~10 runs with the glove, gain ~5 run back with the bat, and be the same ~2.5 WAR player he’s been each of the past 4 years.

I think the most likely reason they took LaRoche over Sogard is simply that they think LaRoche is a better player.

by Danny on Mar 31, 2011 5:27 AM PDT up reply actions

That the A's are dissatisfied with Kouzmanoff as the starting 3B

has to be the world’s worst kept secret at this point. In the fairly unlikely event that LaRoche’s spring represents anything other than a small-sample fluke, I think they’d be more than happy to oust Kouzmanoff.

by PaulThomas on Mar 31, 2011 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions

The problem with LaRoche

Is that he’s the guy who can’t be used. As the only IF backup, he becomes like a backup catcher. The only time he plays is the rare occasion when Ellis, Pennington, or Kouz sits. And with his defense, I’m not sure we want him doing that too often. I’d rather have Sogard over Jackson, leaving LaRoche as a useful bat off the bench.

by boilerdan on Mar 30, 2011 7:50 PM PDT reply actions

Yea

LaRoach could end up being almost a Jay Payton of the infield. Penny and Ellis will need plenty of days off.

Even if he doesn’t start, with his power LaRoach would be a good late game pinch hitter for one of the offense lacking infielders also.

by Mr. Clean Sweep on Mar 30, 2011 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Rosales is a legit middle IF

And he had to play because of injuries. I guarantee that if Ellis or Penny goes down, LaRoche will not be the replacement starter.

Jackson 7 week trial

When rosales gets back off the DL in May Conor better be hitting or he will be the one cut. Reason i say this is if LaRouche hits and plays good enough D the A’s can use Rosales in Jackson place since Rosale splays LF and 1b as good as Jackson does.

by Arcman on Mar 30, 2011 9:49 PM PDT reply actions

Thing about that is,

it’s likely Jackson won’t get many ABs the first 7 weeks. With most pitchers being RH, Sweeney will be the main “first sub” if an OFer goes down. Jackson’s time is likely going to be limited to PHing against LHPs and some platoon starts, unless not one but two OFers go down.

So, my nine year old son had the game of his life the other night.

He has been struggling with the bat and his defense has been so shoddy he’d managed to negotiate himself to right field. The other night he got it together and hit a double with two rbi for the go ahead runs. Which promptly resulted in a bench role for the next inning. After that, he got back in the game at second base and made a pretty good catch on a fly ball.

I still refuse to wear a Red Sox hat.

Eh, it's not so much that.

He’s a little die hard A’s fan because his dad is, insomuch as as a nine year old can be. His mother and sisters (all over 20) are Yankee fans. Mainly to annoy their dear old dad I think. That and Jeter seems to have a very nice rear end. Apparently, that’s an importand quality in a ballplayer from a female fans perspective. Is there a stat for that? I have three daughters, so my life is vexing on the best of days.

To me, the most amazing thing is that my little guy looks for my approval. I’m telling you, he was on second doing his little dance and looking for me in the crowd. Of course I was the loudest SOB in the stands. Funny thing is, my wife was getting pissed at the coach a couple days before that game because “her boy” was being mistreated. My actual words to her were that she should shut her mouth and let her son work it out on his own. Soon enough he would make a spectacular catch or get a big hit and that he would look for me in the stands, and that was enough for me.
