Eric Chavez signs minor league deal with the.....YANKEES...
I did not see this coming. I guess I just expected Chavez to end up with a west coast team, most likely the Dodgers. With ARod's injury issues lately, I think Chavez has a solid chance at seeing a decent amount of playing time if he can manage to stay healthy. Also, I could see him putting up some pretty respectable numbers playing in that bandbox. I hate to see him end up in pinstripes, just like several others, but I still wish him the best of luck.

Why, Chavy?
I would have even overlooked it if he signed with the Red Sox. Yankees, though, is unforgivable

I’m the opposite. Signing with the Bosux would have been unforgivable for me.

Is it just me, or does it look like Baltimore could put up a pretty respectable season in 2011? Obviously they have next to no chance in that division, but I like the lineup their gonna be putting out and they have some nice young pitching with Guthrie, Matusz, Arrieta and Tillman. If Duke can turn in 20+ starts somehow that team doesn’t look half bad.
I don't know...

Baltimore would be a good team in 2008 if they had their current roster back then
but they don’t.

Take a look at their lineup
and the young pitching talent they have on that team. Like I said, they won’t go anywhere in that division, but if Matusz and one of Arrieta/Tillman can turn in solid seasons along with Guthrie, and possibly Duke, that team could win some ballgames. Odds are against it, and I know we all get used to Baltimore being a losing team, but something tells me they may open some eyes this season.
Wow
Chavy in pinstripes??

Im surprised he didnt go to Cleveland when I heard he was in the mix
They offered him it seems the best opportunity to get a lot of playing time.

meaning they inquired, but not that he had offers
since he signed a minor league deal with the Yanks it’s hard to get a lesser offer…
NL would've been a better fit...
for Chavez at this stage of his career. He could’ve been a pitch hitter, part-time 1B and DH during interleague play, kinda Giambi’s role in Colorado. Not sure where he fits with the NYY. 3B has got to be a stretch for him after all the tape and glue. However, I wish him luck.

ya I just saw this also. I didn’t see it coming. I am curious whats going to happen with him. Since they have A-Rod and all. I hope he makes the 25 man roster. I am always rooting for him (until he plays against the A’s)

I will miss Chavy
He’s my favorite all time player and it’s disappointing to see him go to the Yanks, but I hope he gets his career back on track. Funny how my favorite player (Chavy) will go to play on the same team as one of my former favorite players A-Rod (when he was with the Mariners and Rangers, even though I rooted against those teams), and both also made number 3 my favorite number.
I hope you do great and are healthy Chavvy
And then midseason get traded to the Jays and lead Toronto to the playoffs.

I wish Chavy the best
The fact that Chavy signed w/ NYY probably means he really didn’t have a lot of major league interest from other teams. My guess is, no other team wanted to take a chance on his injury history. From the Yankees perspective, Rodriguez does not have such a lengthy injury history that the Yankees feel they need to sign an insurance policy at 3rd base. The Yankees have so much money, they could afford to sign Chavy to a minor league contract in the hopes that he can bounce back from his injuries and be a useful bench player. Or maybe they talked to Chavy and he agreed to start the season in minor league ball to prove that he’s healthy enough to play in the bigs. Whichever it is, I don’t begrudge Chavy signing w/ the evil empire. He’s obviously not ready to call it a career, and he took a chance with-from a player’s perspective- a great organization. I wish him the best, and if he makes the team, I’ll applaud him in his first at bat at the Coli. Then I hope he strikes out.
Seems from speculation
and from his own mouth that he had many suitors, or at least phone calls from various teams. Maybe he wanted to play for a contender and, with A-Rod’s injuries lately, a team that he could get playing time. Eric is still one of my favorite players, but the Yankees! Oh well.
Saying he had choices
May thats just be PR, or maybe we’ll never know. But I can’t believe there was much of a market for him. There are more teams with a need for hitters and\or infielders that if he had an offer from them and really just wanted to make it back to the majors that he wouldn’t have signed with another team.
This was meant as a reply to asyouwish in the above comment.
I still haven’t learned how to edit my own posts.
You may be right
but not necessarily a good PR move for A’s fans, i.e. he makes us believe he could be on the Dodgers, but decided not to go to the Evil Empire. To be honest, I don’t really care. I wish Chavy the best, but I hate the Yankees and will find anyway to voice it.
Good for him
He wants to play again, the Yankees are willing to give him a chance, and he always seemed like a good guy, so good for him!

Meh
He was my favorite Athletic even through last year knowing he probably will never become what he once was but it didn’t really matter that much where he signed once he wasn’t going back to Oakland. The Yankees are as evil as the Red Sox. Hope he is able to return to health and get some playing time regardless of where he ends up. Maybe playing with a contender mattered as much as anything for him and they were the best team to make an offer.
Gas to Chicago- $23.87 A's/White Sox Tix- $28 Watching the A's whipping the Sox in July 05'- Priceless
ding ding ding... he went to the team with the best chance of winning
He knows he can’t be a starter, and maybe not even a MLB level player, so he wants to fight to be a bench player for a playoff team. If you can’t accomplish anything personally why wouldn’t you want to jump on a wagon headed for October. Good luck Chavy, I can still root for the Yankees to beat true evil (Boston/SF).
Yankees will be lucky to make playoffs
Book it. Unless there is a major trade to help their pitching
by Trainman on Feb 5, 2011 10:25 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I'll admit that expecting the Yanks to be a playoff team is very presumptuous
But I still think he chose them because they’re the best team he had a competitive offer from, plus we all know they’re gonna do whatever they can to trade for pitching.
oh how times change
wasn’t it back in 2009 or so when A-rod had hip surgery that Cashman wanted to swing a deal with the A’s for Chavez? We could have unloaded the medical melodrama for someone other than a $11m/year necklace back then. Alas, Horatio, alas…

He won't even make the team -
He’s done – finished – just hasn’t come to grips with it, yet.
If, by some miracle, he does play, I can’t wait for the first time he tells the New York media how much better the Red Sox are and how the Yankees are just lucky to be in the same division with them … “frankly,” he’ll say, “I’m surprised we’ve managed to keep up with them for this long … they’re just so good, they’re just so awesome, and my team can’t keep up. But thanks for asking … now I’ll go take my 1-4 and hit a home run in the 9th inning when we’re down by 7.”
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.

WHAT!??!?!?!?!?!?!
Good luck Chavez!
I hate the Yankees but I love Chavez. I can forgive him, as well as the other A’s players who have gone to the Yankees. Its time to let anything to do with Chavez go.
this hurts
There is a Chavez jersey hanging on my side of the closet, and one on my wife’s side as well. He was hands down our favorite player on the team. This is giving me flashbacks to the time where I was watching the news on Univision for Spanish class back in high school and they showed Mike Gallego putting on a Yankees hat. I wish him well, but I never like seeing my favorite players sign with the Yankees.
