Loving AN...a celebration of everything that is right with this site
Happy New Year everyone!
I opened up my mail the other day, and these days, it's tough, because of a recent tragedy, getting mail for someone who is no longer around is just a bitter pill. But I digress. I opened up a lovely Christmas card from my very good friend BBG and her hubby. Talk about making my day!
From this little electronic device and the magic of Al Gore's interwebs, the relationships I have made here on AN, the wonderful friendships, the moments of levity, have been nothing short of amazing in my life. Where do you rush to when you hear the slightest rustle in the wind about our team? How many times have we gotten together for tailgates and parties because of the relationships on this site?
The recent events with mikev and Nico are just indicative of a relationship; sometimes they are difficult. But let's all take a moment out of our busy schedule today to thank Nico, Blez, BBG, Don (both good and evil), EN, Dan the magical Bot, et al for their time and service in keeping this machine living and breathing. I know that without AN in my life, despite the occasional META, would not be as enriched.
Thank you BBG for taking the time to send me a Christmas card and bringing some holiday cheer into my life. What do you love about AN everyone? Who would you like to thank?

Everyone in the game threads
You’re passionate, knowledgeable and damn clever. My in-game companions at home are beer, the dogs, and AN game-threaders.
I appreciate the front-pagers for all they do. But the game threads make not being there so much more fun, I miss it when I’m actually at the games.
All my sympathies on your tragedy, OP. Here’s to a better New Year for all of us.

I signed onto this site with a preconceived idea about my knowledge about the A's and baseball.
After a rough start(to say the least), I have come to think of many here as friends. Good friends. I am thankful to have been taught a lot about things I never knew existed. I’ve also seen how so many, from such diverse backgrounds, can join together to rave about OUR favorite team, the Oakland(soon to be San Jose) A’s. This is the true blessing this site gives. No relationship is easy, but they are worth working out the problems. Thanks to all my friends here, and stay safe at the end of this year. Thanks to all who made and continue to make AN possible. Happy New Year ANers!

“Fuck the Giants” is obscenity.

The best thing about here
is the wonderful friends I have made, some of whom I even live with in the same house. And of course, people like OP here, who make the hardships of caring about a franchise that sometimes doesn’t appear to care about itself all the more palatable with their great parties and even better friendship.

Thanks OP for this nice moment of clarity.
And thanks Blez and all the mods, writers, regular posters, etc… that make AN so informative and, well, entertaining.
Before I discovered AN I thought I knew alot about the A’s and baseball… Now I know that I don’t know crap about the A’s and baseball. But I am learning. Thanks AN for making me less stupid.
The drama will happen. But at the end of the day we all still love the A’s. That’s what AN is all about.

I Joined AN
Because i figured it would be a site with friendly people who love the team I do and who I can talk baseball with and get away from a country where it’s “all soccer, all the time” and where hardly anyone knows anything about baseball. This is a fantastic site, and a great community, and it’s what I’ve always needed. Thanks to the mods and to everyone else who made this site what it is. Thanks to Blez for creating a site where the giants are only mentioned in an outrageously derogatory way. Getting frustrated with the A’s happens a lot these days, but we still love ‘em and it’s still baseball.
I found this site randomly one day and was amazed with an article from BBG and the subsequent comments.
AN continues to be my tutor and cheerleader as a NRAF confined to Chicago. This is my release from the trials of life. Thanks to all who contribute, especially the front page writers. May the new year bring you green & gold blessings.

Happy 2012 to all
My list of the folks I have come to care about here at AN and at the tailgates and road trips and the ballgames is long indeed. I have new and dear friends and can be Mom/Auntie to several of you and your kids. It is a joy to watch them grow up. Makes me smile just thinking about it.
I don’t post much anymore, but I look forward to reading A’s news here. Hoping the end of the year drama is resolved, soon.
Here’s to a healthy, happy and safe 2012 to us all…and remember, you never know what you will see at the ballpark! I look forward to seeing many of you there, often, next season.
GO A’s!

AN continues to be the trailblazer for SBN sites, and is unparalleled in quality and commentary
Whenever anything big happens concerning the A’s, my first reaction is to head to AN to read about it and see the community’s analysis. AN has taught me an incredible amount of baseball, slowly converting me into much more of a SABR-head than I ever thought I would be. I feel like I understand the game better than ever, and although it has greatly increased my disdain for “casual fans” (i.e. dumbass fairweather fans), I’m still grateful for the knowledge.
The variety of the posters on this site is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, from DoctorK’s love of boobies, to ChickenStanley’s poops, Dan’s botness, Jennifer’s nurse talk, Bloom’s loveable irreverence, mikeV’s profanity and drinking, Kyli’s feelings about gold alts… I could go on and on. Even though I’ve never met anyone on AN in person, I feel like I know a lot about so many of you.
Despite the divisive situation we found ourselves in recently, I really hope most ANers stick around so we can continue to have the fun, lively, weird and wacky game threads, recap threads and lounges I’ve come to enjoy so much.
AN is the best sports blog on the internet, hands down, and I want to help keep it that way as long as the green and gold blood still runs through my veins.

Awesome. Happy New Year to all of AN, and special thanks to all of the moderators and administrators
I’m so glad I found my way here to what has remained, through all the ups and downs of the team and its fanbase, still the most interesting and intelligent place to talk about the A’s.
Scott Hatteberg, English major.
I love this site
I love OP and Elcroata’s insight. I love Nico’s humor and BBG’s – hmmm . . . I want to say BBG’s smile, but of course I’ve never seen her smile. I just know she’s smiling when she posts, though. I learn SO much from PT, and so many others I could mention.
How valuable is this site? Well, as a longtime NRAF who wasn’t paying close attention to the stats, I thought Bobby Crosby was a good player until I started hanging out here from time to time. Disabusing me of that notion was truly a service to humanity.
What this site really means to me is that, at the end of a long hard day on the east coast, I can check in here knowing I’ll almost always get a laugh, learn something, and feel connected to my old home.
Thank you all for all you do!
Do you know the way to San Jose?

People should go watch this now

I love how Tyler had to use a lyric sheet
He Steven, you recorded this song, don’t you remember?
A couple of simple and supple delights can bring out a smile in every straight man (and some chicks too)!
Came for the baseball, stayed for the people.
I’ve met some really great people here. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve had fun. I’ve made a fool of myself. I wouldn’t change a thing about my experience.
"The Lord has blessed us with birthday cake!"
For some twenty years I've been trying to focus on the good, when things weren't really that good - so why stop now?
I’ve laughed a lot. I’ve laughed reading about butts, poetic interludes and the fear of flying, about compliant porks and barely known ones.
I’ve read a lot. I’ve read about the A’s, but I’ve also read about people dealing with the departure of their parents and the prayers needed to keep their children alive.
I was often humbled by the beauty of the written words on these pages, from the ones about Stomper to the ones about Ratliff.
I’ve learned a lot. About stats and contracts, players of past and future. But also about life.
I’ve written a lot. I’ve interviewed future Hall of Famers, I’ve written about probabilities and possibilities, but also about Moshi Ants, Sindelfingen Squirrels, soccer and skiing.
I’ve made a bunch of graphs. Four of them I never will.
I’ve been amazed by the creativity on this site, be it cover version of the songs, theatrical impersonations or models built for the bobble heads.
I’ve made friends. I’ve sent rare baseballs and pear jams to people I never met. People I have never met donated to my charity.
I met one AN-er. I still remember the look on his face when he got off the train and I greeted him with four beer bottles sticking out of the pockets of my pants.
I reached out. I offered unsolicited advice and support to people I think greatly deserve it.
I taught. The idea that someone might understand the game just a bit better as a result of the efforts that I’ve put on this site is a very rewarding feeling.
I’ve been wrong. But, sometimes, I found it in me to admit it and ask for forgiveness and it felt great to make at least respected opponents out of potential bitter adversaries.
And I’ve laughed some more with the funny creatures of the lounging land.
It’s been a blast, AN.

Thanks Blez!
As Hawaii has no team to claim a true regional affiliation, I began as a (baseball) nerd who became interested in the A’s from the 2001 season. This was only because my older sister (= remote controller) was a huge Barry Zito fan. The A’s from then on was “the team I root for.”
It wasn’t until I discovered the original Athletics Nation (ironically from an ESPN.com post) about in 2004/5 in which I read all of the thoughtful writing of Blez and the collective users of AN where I truly became a “hardcore” fan. As someone who likes to soak up as much as I can about my interests, this site filled that void. As SB Nation came about, other sports interests were given a similar (but not quite the same) portal.
With the formation of “The Verge” (crazy all-star team of tech writers) and now upon hearing the forthcoming “Vox Gaming” (with it’s own all-star team of contributors), I find most of my time is spent reading direct or indirect spawns of Blez’s creation.
It’s amazing how much of an impact a Bleszinski (CliffyB ruined mornings as I played GOW3 late into the night) had on my digital lifestyle in 2011. Thanks Blez for helping change the internet culture for news/media and satisfying my information cravings!
If you are ever in Hawaii, or should we be able to cross paths on the mainland, I would gladly buy you a beer or 4.
Brett
AN is a great site but it sure seems like a lot of folks have left
and if they stay gone the site will suffer for it big time.
But seriously, folks....
People leaving is normal for any site.
Life takes people in different directions. What was once new becomes old and our interests change. For some people to move on is healthy and normal.
It is a mistake to measure the health of a community by the people it loses. What really determines whether a site stays great is how well it does with bringing new people in.
Baseball is a stupid-making enterprise in that nobody wants to be singled out or say something dumb. —Michael Lewis
That's a very short-sighted view, iglew.
Would you say that the brain drain in Russia or any other country/community is not indicative of those countries/communities being less healthy? I don’t see why this is any different. AN has now publicly lost some of its best content providers. Not to say that they can’t be replaced, but I don’t think I’m wrong in saying that AN has attracted some of the best and brightest dedicated A’s fans out there. They are no longer contributing to the site, not because anything became “old” or they suddenly became less A’s fans, or became busier, but because they object to how decisions are made that impact the community. That is really unfortunate and I believe that Bed.’s conclusion is right.
I don’t think that AN will become a ghost town, but the site has lost its attractiveness to many important community members, and that’s a shame, especially as it didn’t need to occur.
