Bailey Goes BOSOX!

So says this guy:

http://twitter.com/#!/Buster_ESPN/status/152141970993721344

and

http://twitter.com/#!/Buster_ESPN/status/152142103567286273

Reportedly: Andrew Bailey and Ryan Sweeney for Josh Reddick, Miles Head (20-year-old 1B), and Raul Alcantara (19-year-old pitcher).

You can view the Boston Red Sox prospects list here: Head is #21 and Alcantara is #23.

Also, who will close for us? I hope Balfour or De Los Santos (or anyone but Fuentes, for that matter).

Gotta be more than just Reddick

please tell me there’s more to this…otherwise a total steal by Boston.
they’ve got 3-4 3B prospects, so I gotta believe one is included…?

Too early to vote, all we know is Redick is involved.

Makes sense to get someone who can play the outfield right away, but what’s his service time situation?

I like it.

Bailey’s still a reliever who can only fetch so much, and losing Sweeney is addition by subtraction. Yes, they are #21 and #23 and didn’t get super high grades, but look at what he wrote about them:

21) Miles Head, 1B, Grade C+: Ineffective in the New York-Penn League in ‘10, but something clicked last year, hit for power and average in Low-A. Power carried forward to High-A but he’s got contact issues to work out, and right-handed hitting first baseman have an uphill battle. Could rank much higher next year
23) Raul Alcantara, RHP, Grade C+: Live arm with good results in rookie ball, still refining his secondary pitches. High ceiling.

We’re not looking for major-league ready talent, we’re looking for high upside, and it sounds like they have some. To me, the puzzler is Reddick. We don’t really need major league ready talent, even if he can hit more than a single homer per decade (looking at you, Sweeney). I like the rest of it, though.

by grover on Dec 28, 2011 4:40 PM PST up reply actions

exactly

Bailey’s a top closer, but at the same time he hasn’t topped 50 innings since his rookie campaign and has a history of injuries.

According to Fangraphs Reddick was worth 1.9 WAR last year, while Bailey was at .9.

Of course this hurts from a fan’s standpoint because we don’t have marquee players and Bailey was our guy to brag about.

We’re rebuilding and it’s frustrating but we have a cheap, good, young outfielder in Reddick and a couple of prospects with upside. Now I would hope with the freed up payroll that we will go after international talent to continue our rebuild.

When we played softball, I’d steal second base, feel guilty and go back.

Because my first reaction is this a pretty poor return, even in a market where relievers are extremely devalued. I would have rather the A’s waited until July and tried to find a desperate team at the deadline.

Oh well, nothing to be done now. Just have have to cross my fingers and hope that Head and Alcantara buck the odds and reach their ceiling.

Well if you subscribe to PT's theory that this rebuild is setting up for the next rebuild,

then everything’s going according to plan. I pretty much agree. I see a bleak, puncher’s chance of competing with this new batch of talent in 2015 but there should be several good arms to trade.

Maybe I’m getting into some too-deep, conspiracy shit right now, but I asked a couple weeks ago whether or not the A’s shouldn’t always target pitchers instead of hitters because of how awesome the Coliseum makes them look. Perhaps that’s the strategy: acquire as many above-average, MLB-ready arms as possible with the hope of trading all of them by 2015.

by NateHST on Dec 28, 2011 2:50 PM PST up reply actions

It helps if you target really talented ones,

and not “low upside” (Reddick) and “#21 prospect…” I don’t care for his “quantity over quality/upside” approach.

I'm confused by the assumption that a late-round nonentity and a pitcher who can't even strike out rookie-ball hitters are "upside guys"

Reddick for Bailey isn’t terrible, but it’s sure not a deal I’d make on its own, much less in conjunction with the other.

"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.

I think Beane had an itchy trigger finger

First rule of thumb: never look desperate. No way Beane should have made this deal, no matter how decent Reddick might be, or Alcantara. He blew two assets at once. Whatever Sweeney’s flaws, someone could have used a high-average good fielding outfielder at some point during the season, given the general injury bug.

by richwol1 on Dec 28, 2011 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

My theory

Is that when they get to 2015, they’re going to spend like drunken sailors, as the Marlins are. The 2015 A’s don’t need to be built entirely from within, they just need to lack major holes.

tko bira, masturbira -- Croatian proverb quoted by elcroata

by WaddellCanseco on Dec 28, 2011 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

You're missing my point

If the A’s stockpile 15-20 good prospects in the next couple of years, via trade, the draft, and the international marketplace, and five of them pan out, that leave four guys to go buy. The second rebuild isn’t necessary because this one isn’t designed to build an entire team from scratch.

NOTICE ME! NOTICE ME!

by jeepers on Dec 28, 2011 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

OK, but so far all I see are pitchers who replace the pitchers we traded

and two new Sweeneys to replace the Sweeney we traded. If two of Parker, Peacock and Cole replace Gio and Cahill, we’ve still got all the holes we had before the trades. The only guy that counts toward your 15-20 is Norris.

tko bira, masturbira -- Croatian proverb quoted by elcroata

by WaddellCanseco on Dec 28, 2011 11:38 PM PST up reply actions

These are just the first steps in the process.

With the return being mostly unproven talent, Beane should be grabbing the best available returns he can get, and not worry about whether they pitch or hit. That can always be balanced in subsequent moves.

Reddick’s the only one that’s somewhat of a head scratcher to me, because his ceiling seems limited, at least on the surface. He hit well in the bigs last year though, in his first try, and we still have him for at least five more years, lending potential value for 2015—he’s basically on the same timeline as weeks, only certain not to be a Super Two. I’d have preferred a AA/AAA guy with a higher ceiling, but it’s not impossible for Reddick himself to pan out, either. He has legit power.

One minor quibble—it’s Cole, Parker, Milone, Peacock as the replacement pool, and ten bodies we got for essentially three people and two fungibles. That’s the beginnings of a sizable pool. Get Soler and a couple more guys of his ilk, and we’re getting close to 15-20 (pitchers and position players).

NOTICE ME! NOTICE ME!

by jeepers on Dec 29, 2011 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

Lemme get this straight:

Out — Gio and Cahill (plus Bailey, Gilliam and Sweeney who weren’t starters)

Future starters In — Cole, Parker, Peacock, Milone, Norris

Placeholders/non-starters in — Cowgill, Cook, Head and probably Alcantara

Let’s say Cole replaces Gio and Parker replaces Cahill. That leaves Peacock, Milone and Norris in your 15-20. But if Cole and/or Parker don’t pan out, you have to subtract from the 15-20, no?

My initial reaction is to like the trade

because of reddick. When I saw the headline that Bailey was traded to boston was “I hope we got Reddick.” I agree about the closers as A’s fans also. We should certainly know by now. The days of Eck being the man from mid season 87 until 1995 are long gone. I honestly want to see Balfour close next season as I think we can inflate his value for a trade in July.

Then again, how bad is it being an A’s fan that we have to root for players to become good trade chips? I just hope this rebuild cycle bares a lot of good fruit around 2014 or so.

Both those guys only managed success when they were amongst the oldest guys in their leagues

That’s not the case with Head. Not a lot of track record to go on but the ISO he put up in low A last year was considerably better than what either Everidge or Spina has managed. If Head’s performance in low A is indicative of the type of player he is then he shouldn’t be considered in the same category as Spina and Everidge.

Of course 66 games at Low A isn’t much to hang your hat on.

He's definitely a risk

I mean both Head and Alcantara are more likely to bust than be above average major leaguers, but that’s kind of the risk you have to run when you target prospects this far away from the majors. Just have to hope that one of the scouts saw something in these guys.

by Sean Fortuna on Dec 28, 2011 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

I'm disappointed by this return but I don't think it's a disaster

I’d think that Bailey’s value falls somewhere between Santos and Huston Street, and the return the A’s got probably falls somewhere between what the White Sox and Rockies received. I think the real lesson is that teams just really won’t trade much value for relievers, even closers. Outside of the occasional panic deal (hats off to the Padres for the Mike Adams haul) we should probably start to lower our expectations for any deal involving a relief pitcher.

The other risk factor, hypothetically,

is that one of the players in this deal takes a big step forward in the first half of the year and prices himself out of the Bailey trade.

If Reddick starts to take more walks while maintaining his power, or Head shows that he can hit well at AA (or can handle playing 3B), then Boston might not want to trade them for Bailey.

Everyone knows that old saw about getting rid of a player one year too early. The corollary is that you want to acquire a player a year too early, before they start to display their full value.

Well, Weeks and Sizemore seem to have some semblance of "tools,"

and could improve over their last seasons (which isn’t completely unbelievable, as it was Weeks’ first MLB season and Sizemore’s first time playing 3B). Cowgill and Reddick appear to have a handle on RF, but it remains to be seen whether they can handle CF over a season. Allen seems athletic enough, but doesn’t have extensive experience in the OF. Pennington could be great like he was in 2010, or awful like he was last year.

by NateHST on Dec 29, 2011 1:21 AM PST up reply actions

Pennington is probably just slightly below average, and Weeks

probably is as well, but Cowgill/Reddick seem stretched in CF, and Allen in LF sounds like he has an upside of a young Willingham. None seems like he’d be above average in a typical year. Even if they average -5, which seems relatively non-horrible, you’ve got a -25 combined. The best case is probably like a -15 combined or something.

Just among the listed guys. I'm not counting Cowgill/Reddick

in RF, Barton/Kila or Suzuki. But now that you mention it I doubt it would matter much. Barton and RF would be positives but Suzuki would be a negative. It would be a wash or a slight positive.

He’s a good first baseman, so why would they move him to a position that he was bad at?

Pretty sure he's well-regarded in LF by AN more than anybody.

He doesn’t have a great body but he seems to have good control over it (think the opposite of Brett Wallace). If he’s athletic enough to play LF, he’ll probably end up out there more often than not. At least, we hope.

Which is too bad because I’d have liked the Red Sox to lose the trade badly.

I’d also like the Red Sox and Giants to get kicked out of MLB (for being d-bags, of course) and be forced to play in Greenland for the next 6577443 years. Oh, add the Yankees to that Greenland competition as well.

Season Ticketholders--What have you heard?

As a Season tickett holder—fielder’s choice—who has not renewed, I am surprised that no one has called with special deals. Has anyone been approached by the ticket sales department?

I have no intention of renewing unless the deal is too good to not take—maybe 2 for 1 or something of that magnitude.

by oaklandcrazy on Dec 28, 2011 3:26 PM PST reply actions

I'd be disinclined to renew anyway

I moved to San Diego 3 years ago and got Padres seasons for the first time last year. Had all sorts of perks to it like free ballpark tour, free on field during BP day, free on field during a preseason ticket holder day, early entrance to the park on game days, free gift of my choice from a special season ticket concession stand… Never got any of that with my A’s seasons and I know my folks still don’t with theirs even though their seats are some of the most expensive ones behind the plate.

a little embarrassed to admit

this is the first year I can afford a fielders choice pack so I put a deposit down a few months ago…I have a feeling I’m going to be at a lot of empty games.

Seeing as I have put down my deposit, there’s no need for ticket services to contact me but still, I’m slightly surprised I haven’t heard anything from the A’s other than an email about fan fest.

Basically, I think they don’t care about season ticket holders at this point. Sad. But I can’t help still loving the A’s.

Boston got the best of us here, but probably not by that much.

Sweeney being productive is predicated on his feeble knees; his bat won’t play at DH, Green Monster notwithstanding. Closers are generally overrated and I think that we’ll get similar value out of whoever lands the role in 2012.

Sometimes a trade only nets you potential, and often that potential is never fulfilled. On the other hand, it isn’t that hard to envision both Bailey and Sweeney getting injured repeatedly while one or more of these new kids becomes a contributor at the major league level for the Oakland/SJ A’s.

This trade looks bad now but could easily end up looking brilliant in a year or two. My bold prediction is this: all 5 players end up disappointing through a combination of injury and lack of production and the trade is utterly forgotten within 2 years.

by Fugy Kupliq on Dec 28, 2011 5:19 PM PST reply actions

That's not a very bold prediction. It's very likely to happen. The problem is that the A's

have now missed 3 opportunities to get position players whom they might be able to build around. It’s true that each A level prospect has a low probability of being that person. That’s why you need lots of them. Not getting any, and Head doesn’t count, means the chance of getting that person has gone to zero

No doubt-it was meant in the spirit of facetiousness.

I guess I’m unreasonably optimistic that we’ll do well looking for bats via the international market and the amateur draft.

While I am not the biggest fan of the return for Bailey, I have to believe that this was the best he could get. I do like that he was traded now and not at the trade deadline because it gives whomever ends up being the closer an opportunity to increase their own trade value (there has to be a few GMs that overvalue the CL next to a pitcher’s name).

by thefatalflu on Dec 28, 2011 6:34 PM PST reply actions

4th Outfielder and C+ prospects?

What a steaming pile of shit trade.

Dear Billy – remember OBP? It’s useful. Reddick is bad at it.

Miles Head is useless. Why get another thick barrelled, long-swinging thumper with holes in his swing at first that can’t play anywhere else? At least he’ll hit in the majors. How about a third baseman?

Alcantara’s not even a lottery ticket.

I don’t believe this team will be watchable next year. It’s like he’s actively trying to field a replacement level team next year. And I don’t think we’ve been improved by these trades going forward.

Our scouting is bad, our drafting is poor. We have a terrible record of developing position players.

They’re just shedding payroll and trolling for last place and draft picks now.

Billy Beane is alienating my affections.

by DavidS on Dec 28, 2011 6:36 PM PST reply actions

to be fair

getting a top 5 draft pick is probably a better way of getting impact talent than trading an oft-injured closer and a 4th OF. Sure the return could and should have been better, but it’s not like Bryce Harper or Wil Myers were coming in the same door Bailey and Sweeney were exiting. Sadly our past draft efforts haven’t been that great either. Hopefully Billy and Co. can do better having a pick closer to the top as opposed to constantly picking in the middle.

by sbzito75 on Dec 28, 2011 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

Depth? Fooey!

I’m tired of these trades for depth. Bundle your established players for a couple of impact talents.

Gio + Bailey + Sweeney could help another team and get us impact talent. We don’t have one stud hitter in our entire system. Not one. And we didn’t get any back in these trades. The only guys who will actually help this team are Parker and and Peacock, and there’s no guarantee they’ll be better than Gio and Cahill, or as durable.

We cleaned out our major league roster and traded established, young, talented, under control pitchers for guys who might not get hurt, and might develop into decent pitchers. We’re not better off – if we’re very lucky we’ll have the same level of pitching competence we had the last two years.

Latos trade got two first-rounder position players who would start on our team in 2012: Alonso and Grandal. Plus then we could trade Suzuki. We’re not getting any blue-chip talent hitters.

As Bill James noted a long time ago, the talent distribution in baseball is a pyramid. We don’t need more Center fielders who can’t get on base, or have huge platoon splits, or corner outfielders who don’t have power or K at record rates or stockpile second basemen or potential DH’s with massive holes in their game. If you’re going to fire sale the team then get somebody back with a reasonable chance of being an impact hitter.

Cowgill and Reddick are just the latest iteration of crap outfielders Beane has continually traded for. Guys like Aaron Cunningham and Chris Denorfia.

If you want to sell off the team don’t give me marginal improvements to depth.

I also think we would do a whole lot better if we had a GM who had a clue but I will wait and see what transpires before making a judgement.

Pretty Meh on the Trade

But at least I can make Chronicles of Riddick Jokes now.

by SBravo53 on Dec 28, 2011 9:25 PM PST reply actions

Think Bailey for Reddick is a decent trade ...

… as has been said a bunch of times already, Bailey is a reliever, who are not as valued in the trade market as almost any other type of player, and Bailey is also injury prone.

Reddick is a already a 2 WAR guy, on less than half season of work, who has a good arm, good glove, hits for decent average, and has some power. Plus, he’s known as a top hustle guy. Not star quality, or huge impact guy, but a good outfielder who will help with offense and wins.

And a guy like Bailey would never fetch a star quality (potential) player – again, reliever who is injury prone.

Then it’s Sweeney for two very young, decent ceiling prospects. Sweeney is a good OF who hits lots of singles and has no power, and has flaky knees. I don’t mind giving him up for decent, young prospects. And like Bailey, you can’t get A or B+ prospects for Sweeney.

by jeff-A's on Dec 28, 2011 10:08 PM PST reply actions

In what way is Head a decent ceiling prospect. And if you're going to trade Bailey why

do it for a 3rd/4th OF rather than a B prospect with upside?

After the 3 trades, farm system is much, much better ...

… and we knew the A’s would suck in 12 anyway. Even if they tried to keep everyone – resign the hammer and Crisp, and keep Gio, Cahill, and Bailey, and even tried to pick up another midling player off the heap (about all the A’s can get with their revenue and terrible stadium), they’d still be about 75 to 80 wins, and with a week farm system, with few top prospects.

I say no thanks to that.

I applaud the blow up. We got rid of aging veterens who weren’t helping enough, we traded away a pitcher who forgot his mechanics and the strike zone, traded a very good pitcher with great stuff but control problems, and traded a reliever with injury problems, and we completely restocked the farm. Plus, were getting some extra picks from loosing Willingham, and probably Crisp.

Finally, the A’s might be on their way to a 100 loss season, which will mean a likely top 5 pick. That’s where the big studs come from.

But then again, this group, with a few journeyman vet FA signings (of the Cody Ross type), the A’s might still be in the 75-ish win area for 2012. Pitching is still going to be good, and I believe fielding will improve (it couldn’t get worse than 2011 – and Melvin is a big stickler for practicing fielding, which Geren wasn’t), and hitting could be watchable.

Don’t laugh – I think one or more of Taylor, Allen, Mitchell, Miller, or Carter, will have a break out season, a la Weeks. And Cowgill and Reddick will be solid. And Sizemore will probably be .260-ish with 14-15 dingers.

Regardless, it will fun to watch from the standpoint of seeing the young guys develop.

Lessons for the future

Don’t trade closers in the offseason. Wait for the trade deadline, or an injury to a contender’s closer.

Maybe the A’s will get lucky on one of the lottery tickets.

Well on the bright side

The degradation of what is left of our team means that the Sacramento exhibition game in March between the A’s and the RiverCats is going to be far more one sided than it should be and would have been otherwise. I mean hell the A’s shouldn’t even bother to show up now, the RiverCats are going to walk all over them.

playing at the same level as Head, isn’t any better as a hitter, and doesn’t have any chance of playing 3B.

I don't really think Head has any chance of playing 3B in any meaningful capacity.

SoxProspects, who are usually very optimistic with their evaluations, said this about him:

Overall, he’s been average defensively at first base. Choppy footwork at times and about average range. Strong arm for a first baseman. Shows soft hands with improving glovework on balls in the dirt. Projects as average-to-solid-average defensively as long as his body doesn’t fill out too much.
But they also said he probably would fill out as he gets older. If he can handle it, great, but I’m not counting on it.

Considering that Matt LaPorta has -1.4 career WAR,

that’s not exactly rocking my world.

"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.

by PaulThomas on Dec 29, 2011 4:16 PM PST up reply actions

Mike Newman really doesn't like Head (insert bad joke here...)

and from what I can tell he’s not just pulling opinions out of his ass. He’s a fangraphs poster, and has watched Head play in the minors. Which makes him a hell of a lot more qualified than I am to have an opinion about the A’s newest minor-leaguer.

Still, although it’s perfectly fair to predict that Head is a future Graham Koonce, I think it’s important to note that he tore up A ball as a 20-year-old. LaPorta didn’t even start his professional career until he was 22. A 20-year-old who makes good adjustments (one of Newman’s observations about him, FWIW), draws walks, makes pretty good contact, and hits for power playing against older guys is someone to notice, at least.

Another way to think of it is this: there are quite a few guys who get drafted high (say, 1st 3 rounds) out of college, who were much lower picks coming out of high school (LaPorta is one example, but there are many others). Head was a 26th-round pick, but according to the Sons of Sam Horn report I linked to over on the other thread, he signed for $300K, which was about what 3rd-rounders signed for in the 2009 draft. If he’d gone to college and hit whatever the college equivalent is of his Greenville numbers, I think a whole lot of scouts would be looking at him as a 1st-round pick in another year or two.

So the guy has a pretty good pedigree, and he was worth a real investment by the Red Sox to keep him from going to college. He proceeded to live up to his hitting projections as a 20-year-old.

He’s obviously not a 5-tool player by any means, and again Newman knows more about him than I do by a long shot. But I’m still going to keep an eye on him, because if he can keep hitting well in AA, and/or hold his own at 3B, he’s going to turn into a B-grade prospect.
